Something odd at CP

Well, I was up until 1:30am (which is really getting to be a late night for me).

- After a bunch of heated emails with my hosting company
- And with no striaght forward answers from them about who accessed the server
- And after talking with a few people this morning

One answer is quickly coming to the forefront.

The Operating System on the server was reinstalled without my knowledge and approval.  When you reinstall an OS, it wipes away everything that was on the server.  I have absolutely no Raw access logs on any of my domains.  The hosting company knows it screwed up, and they won't admit to it.

Was it a mistake where they were asked by another client for a OS reinstall, and they did my machine by mistake, or if someone called as me, and asked for my OS to be reinstalled, I don't know.

I'm working on trying to get the latest backup of the database up.  It's really a bitch of a process.

Something similar happened last month on another forum I visit. In their case, the hosting company admitted to their [mistake] and that they had fired the idiot responsible for it. Unfortunately in their case, their last backup was several months old.

If you need any help let me know Ken.

Know a good, reliable hosting company that will return phone calls, admit to mistakes, and knows English?

If you want, I can ask a friend who her hosting company is for her band fic website.

There's one other I know of called Nexcess, but I don't have much info on them. I do know they host a fairly high-volume fanfic site (adultfanfiction.net )

Maybe it is time to go back to Network Solutions. I have them for my site, and though I know it is as not as much as CP, I have never had any problems. Oh and always get a person who is American.

Ouchie, Network Solutions doesn't offer what CP needs. (Dedicated Server).

I'm looking at 3 different companies right now.

If you were me, which one would you go with?

https://www.liquidweb.com/cart/content/dedicated/

http://www.softlayer.com/

http://serverwizards.com/dservers.php

Whichever one is not in New Jersey.

Go with LiquidWeb. Just a hunch. See if you can get auto matic backup of the data. Also, shouldn't be able to recover the data that was erased? IMHO they not only have a responsibility to do it, but they should at least attempt.

Ken, how were you backing up your data this time around?

On the newer versions of IPB, they have a SQL Backup process in the ACP. Very simple process. In fact, Julie's brother did the latest backup on August 17th.

Honest to God. I was looking at that on Sept 1st, and told myself now would be a good time to back everything up, but it was late and I told myself I would do it during the Labor Day weekend...

When you use the IPB SQL Backup, it's nothingmore than a SQL Dump. Reinstalling a database this way is a very, very long process. I'm doing this now, and then when that is done, I'll upload the file structure and get this thing running.

So, just like RR does here, YOU now have control over the backups. Mike backs up the SQL files to a disc about every five days. And I have all the graphics for all three skins stored on a harddrive here, along with copies of the CSS color sheets.

Based on what's happened to CP these past two times, it's pretty obvious that trusting an outside hosting company to back up your data is not a safe bet. That's a shame since your monthly fee should guarantee that you won't lose more than, at worst, a week's worth of posts. Because you have your own backup you only lose 17 days of data. Could've been a lot worse.

I sure hope you find out what really happened this time, and find out who was responsible. If they indeed updated your server's OS without your OK, then that's inexcusable.

Ken, I'll admit right up front I don't know jack-shit about this kinda stuff, but over at a board I've been part of for 4 years now we've had http://www.fusionbb.com/ for that last year or so with tremendous success. They recommend http://www.vertexhost.com/ as a hosting company.

Just my two shiny Lincolns worth.

edied: to ad hosting company -

What it comes down to is this:

What are the exact service level agreements(SLAs) that they are commiting to? Believe it or not, its not evident in the promises made on these pages. What does the actual contract say?

Most SLAs for these companies are hardware based, but this time, you don't have a hardware issue. The machine was wiped, and most SLAs will just guarantee that you'll get a new box in X hours.

These companies are all pretty much the same:

1. Room full of servers somewhere in the U.S.

2. Hardware techs and level III support onsite

3. Level I and II support offsite, typically India

Doesn't matter what one you pick, because experiences and complaints are the same all around. This is a commodity business rather than a full service business. True service comes at a much higher price.

afraid that's about right jazz.
how much is it to buy/run your own server?

Owning your own server would cost a couple of grand. Then its a bandwidth issue. As well, you'd need to do all the care/feeding yourself. It seems to me, that CP belongs in a hosted environment, ideally with more service and perhaps better security.

What I stress, is that CP is but a small part of life for Ken and Julie. Lets be patient. There are things many of us can do, both technical and financial, to help things out. Lets keep the pressure off, despite our anxiousness to get back to life as we know it there. Thanks TRF!

We were lucky in that RR already had a server laying around the house, already knows how to maintain one, and is enough of a computer geek to WANT to maintain it. tongue.gif But when we had to upgrade the server about a year ago, it did cost us some coin. Plus there's the yearly domain fees. Running one of these joints ain't cheap.

The difference though is that I have access to the SQL root... Using IPB CP to backup is not all that effective...
