It's quite a bit more difficult to play correctly than you'd think! I was trying to record a drum track for it for my online collaboration project and it must've taken me a million tries to get it somewhere near decent. Here's a small clip of me going off on some tangent at the end of one of my failed takes... http://h1.ripway.com/KirkDS/Drum%20Tracks/RedB-Improvise.mp3 That sounded great! I like a good improv and that certainly was a good one. How are you recording the drums? Sounds great whatever you are doing. Also, do you play along with the music or do you just play by memory? I've been trying to play along with the actual songs lately and have found it hard due to the fact that to get the tones I want from my amps, they have to be cranked up loud. I end up not being able to hear the music coming out of the speakers over my amps, even with headphones. The only thing that works for me is iPod ear pieces. Good work. Thanks man... Just some cheap mics and a small (and cheap) Mackie mixer. It goes into my PC where I can EQ and add some reverb. (obviously too much reverb on this clip!) If you check out our "Digital Men" site, it goes into more detail, but yes...I do play along with the CD to record my tracks. Since you're a guitarist, here are a few of my drum tracks to play along with if you'd like. http://h1.ripway.com/KirkDS/Drum%20Tracks/index.html Holy Crap! Thanks. This will be the closest I've been to actually playing rush with a real person ever! Listening to Red Barchetta now. Sounds great. I have to find a way to get this in to my 4 track so I can play along with it, record it and post it. Thanks again! (adds your page to favorites) WOW. I'm listening to more now. I'm really excited about this. I can't wait to start recording. Once I lay down the guitar, maybe we can get one of the bass players on the board to lay down the bass? We could have our own internet band! OK. Just looked at your signature. I see you are already doing that. I talked to Pete a few times before and he mentioned the project. You guys sound great. Thanks a lot man! Hey, nothing wrong with adding your guitar to my drums just because it's already been done. I'd love to hear it. Your Red Sector A sounded great. Makes me wanna do that one next. OK. I finally did some recording. I recorded Limelight with KirkDS on drums and Rushfan on guitars. I tried like hell to get the solo in during the hour and a half I had to do this in but all my attempts sucked ass so I decided to try it tomorrow. Till then, I am please with the results and wanted to share. KirkDS and Rushfan doing Limelight (solo to come).

But I can't do the bloody solo I can never get the delay setting right on the opening of that song. Are you using delay when you play it or are you just learning the riff? I got the delay right, I used my multy-effects pedal, a digitech rp-50, it's a very useful thing!

Rush!
My drum teacher & I started on La Villa Strangiato recently. The first 10 hi-hat measures are easy, then he shifts into something else which is harder. My drum teacher worked it out and I've been practicing the beat. Freedom_Fighter
right now i'm working on Pull Me Under by Dream Theater. i've known the intro up to the first verse, the first part of the second verse, and the third verse for a while. now i'm working on the rythm under the keyboard solo and the pre-choruses. it's killin me! so.....much.....fast....palm muting!!!! the second pre-chorus part is so fun to play though, but it's hard to nail perfectly. i'm also trying to do that short shred solo right before the chorus after the second pre-chorus, but it'll be a while before i get it down. Freedom_Fighter
i've tried the solos for Beyond This Life and Fatal Tragedy. i can't do them. don't mistake me for a shred machine man lol Pull Me Under is hard enough for me cuz i'm not used to shredding yet. besides, the solos for pull me under are pretty flippin fast if you ask me! xredsectorx
my friend lent me his rush anthology book for the weekend and so far i've learned the solo from Tom Sawyer and just about everything in Xanadu except the solo, which is my goal for today, and probally the rest of the week. and i hear ya about the dream theater stuff, i working on erotomania and its tough. i can play the first solo, but only at like 1/8 of the speed Petrucci plays it. i'm just starting to get into the shred my self and its freakin hard!
