It seems that a post of mine might have been the straw that broke the camel's back.

Absolutely not. I'm honestly not sure which post of yours you're referring to, and that's the truth.

For the record, we've all been discussing this since Tuesday night.

The key is what's called self-moderation. I don't think the moderation here is heavy at all. As far as I can tell the admins and mods are pretty free-spirited. They do have a concept of what they would like the tone of the board to be, and they exercise their power gently.

Couldn't have put it better myself, Grizz. trink39.gif

I posted that the Reclamation was a good idea earlier. . . but after reading a lot of these posts (mostly yours Grandpa) I can see how it might not be a good idea. Maybe the sub forum idea is a good one?

I'm not trying to tell anybody what to do. Just trying to help the thinking here. This is a pretty crutial turning point for this board. Either way it will survive. I'm sure of that.

Every message board is different. I admire our admins for wanting to discuss this.

Ok, maybe not.

But I still feel somewhat responsible.

Even if it wasn't the straw, I wanted to come clean.

I felt bad about it, and making reparations to everyone

helps me to get over the fact that I did something that

I feel stupid about.

Therefore, my apology stands.

And I won't accept no for an answer!

I got to the part in the Caption thread that called out this thread. Hard to believe, but I just got on. ohmy.gif I was also a part of that post and would also share my opinions as well. I want to apologize as well for my part. I have heard from others that they may even have their kids on their laps when they are reading TRF and captions of the middle finger being waved could cause a problem. My kid saw it and laughed his butt off, but he knew it was a joke cuz i was laughing so hard. As for other threads, I think i've been a bit shocked that they made it on the board, but since there was no immediate pull, i kinda thought that the board may be growing in a different direction and joined in as well. I guess a lot of us pushed the envelope until we found where the pushing would stop. In pm's and chats we've all discussed how things started to change a little since the caption game started getting a bit racy. We were always wondering when someone would get a spanking or IF the board was just changing. Since the original rules were in place and it was us that bended them, i don't see how there can be any bitching about it. There's no way for a mod or admins to be on top of everything, so us running wild and not being told about it for awhile just means that we got our slack and now it's time to reign it in. NOW... I read the TRF faq and i knew the rules. The rules got bent and we're at a possible crossroads. From Pag's post on the topic of an adult section, it seemed to me that when the board was built, you guys wanted to stay away from that, am i right? If so... then I applaud that and will will fully respect that. If it was just something that was said in the beginning of the TRF life and could be under reconsideration, then by all means, give it another thought. I loved it here before we got racy and I will still love it here if we have to tone it down. As far as spammy threads and post count stuff, I have no real opinion. I think they are funny as well. Anything that is funny is good for me personally. TRF de-stressifies me to no end. Even in high drama situations, the board is very therapeutic. I know they don't have any redeeming value and just take up tons of space, but some people really like them. Getting rid of things that some people like because other people don't like them kind of alienates a bit. I feel if it's a thread that a lot of people like and it gets shut down because other people don't like it, you can't help but look like you took sides and that may cause an alienation of some. While I understand the need for more cautious posting styles, annoyance threads can just be overlooked by people who don't like them, right? So rather than spank the person who does like them... you know what i'm saying right? laugh.gif I don't want to catch up to anyone either, but the Test thread was cool just cause of it's significance. Repetitive in nature, sure, but it had its own merit as well. Just sayin'.

I hope more people chime in here. I'm glad you chose to post it on the board for us all to do so.

C'mon Geds. yeah... i understand now that it's been called out, we feel bad, but at the time we were laughing our asses off. laugh.gif You know for months we knew that thread was revolutionizing the board in general and eventually we would be told about it. dazed025.gif That thread took a more racy tone even with the participation of mods and admins, so let's not totally beat up on ourselves here. I know we sometimes think that thread is just us talking to each other, and we've done stuff like that. We'll stop, no problems, but don't hang yourself here. There was a lot going on before that post/caption and 1-0-0-1 even said that. I understand you need to "come clean", but now you're just using up all the hot water. laugh.gif

1. I think the idea of a sub-forum is a bad, bad idea. First off, say there's a thread like Hilda. This IMHO is a completely harmless (not to mention a completely hilarious) thread. If it was only in pehaps a raunchier sub-forum (not like it deserves to be), only a select few people would ever venture into it. I like that crazy threads are open for anyone to waltz into when they're feeling brave and perhaps get caught up in the madness.

2. I personally hate having threads or posts of mine pulled, especially if I'm expressing myself in some way, however there are exceptions. One time recently I went what was considered to be a little too far in a post with graphic language. It was edited, however someone was VERY kind to PM me to let me know it was being changed. I understood the reasoning, had no problem with it and was VERY appreciative of being informed. I even knew as I was writing it that it was probably going too far and only went with it cause it wouldn't have been nearly as funny had I toned it down. I understood fully that it went too far and I apologize for that.

3. Nowhere that I could see in the initial post of this thread was it mentioned which threads specifically would be closed. I would like to know some examples of what's being talked about specifically. I'm much more open to threads being closed because they're too over the edge inappropriate for youngsters than I am to ones being closed just because someone thinks they're redundant if fun and enjoyment is being had in them. I've always thought, if a thread really sucks, it won't last anyway, and the ones that last are the ones that people enjoy. Enjoyment to me is what it's all about. yes.gif

4. While I must admit that I've been a big part of the forum becoming a bit more raunchy in some of the humor, I also must say that I passionately love that this has happened and it makes it much more entertaining to have more of an anything goes kind of environment. I realize that sometimes it goes too far, and I'm fine with it being toned down somewhat, as long as it doesn't go over the edge. I would hate to feel stifled. Toning it down a bit is fine, I just am wary.

5. I also think there should be threads that are somewhat immnue to having to tone things down like the caption a random image thread. Because of the nature of that thread, that is having to come up with creative captions for random pictures, it would truly suck if I had to keep it to a PG rating as it would really stifle the creativity IMHO. I also don't want all out hardcore pornography (especially in the photos themselves) either, I just want SOME freedom to post without having to worry too much. Believe it or not, even someone like myself self-moderates to a degree and stops at a certain level - you should hear some of the captions that go through my mind that I refrain from posting!

What about for certain threads like this having a certain icon (if it's even necessary) so people know this one contains explicit language on a regular basis so people can know not to read those ones if their young kids are watching or something? Just an idea.

Sorry for my long post! blush4.gif

Peace & Love,

Gary

as part of this forum i have read each post here carefully and here is my response. i cant help but feel a little bit uncomfortable with thread. i also cant help feeling like one of the reasons it was created. if im being too self rightous forgive me .if i personally have compromised the integrity of this forum i appologize profusely. i will however say that i do not in any way feel im moronic or childish, and dont really appreaciate that comment.i believe this forum gives its members freedom of expression which isnt to say there should not be boundries. for me though to hear certain members dont want to come here because of a few threads in random samples seems a bit imature to me .i believe there is plenty of great stuff going on here besides hilda ,jawk jaw or any nonsensical thread i may have created.i dont believe anyone has ever been forced to read the latest hilda post and plenty have no clue what jawk jaw is. i believe random samples is just that ,random subjects not pretaining to rush.there are plenty of threads here i have not visited and have no interest in but i hope they stick around for the folks that do. i dont go into reverse polarity but i have no problem with it.as far as i know i dont ever have to go there.i dont expect some people to want to read jawk jaw anymore than i want to read "hey my computers not working , does anyone have an extra 7th vector valve ?) you get the point.in closing i hope i peronally have brought people more joy than i have annoyance.i thank you for listening and for the right to speak. sincerally , tick. (dam this is the longest post ive ever made.)

one last thing:

it was mentioned that there was a downward trend of a sort as of late and some weren't coming into RS for that reason. i was also told this over 6 months ago soon after i came on the board. it was hard to know what was being referred to since i only knew RS from may 24th, 2005 onwards when i joined TRF, but it always seemed like a ridiculous amount of fun to me.

if mods and admins think there has been yet another downward trend since the initial downward trend ( wacko.gif ), then i'm missing it completely, UNLESS it's referring specifically only to it getting a little more graphic. that i have noticed. to me it's been a plus and i'll hate to see it go, but that i can deal with. otherwise, it's been nothing but a total blast for me...

it was also a very good post. as well as Gary's. I agree with both. I think basically i admit we've crossed a line, and should self moderate a bit. I think your threads are hilarious tick and love to join in. If someone doesn't... don't click on it, right? I totally see your point. I would hate to see a ban on humor of a more mature theme, and i would definitely hate to see a ban on silliness. I like Gary's idea of an icon for the parents or people who just don't like that stuff. Just my vote.

the more i think about it, the more uncomfortable i get with this whole thing. i was just snooping around RS and looked in a thread. it was a meaningless thread, but it was somewhat fun. i saw no reason for it to be taken away but now i'm paranoid - is THIS gonna be removed, is THAT gonna be removed? if i start a thread that someone deems as unnecessary, will it just be removed? sad.gif

Since you asked...

I don't like censorship at all. sad.gif

I appreciate the wide variety of topics (and non-topics tongue.gif ) to choose from.

And the lame threads or lame posts within prized threads still serve a purpose, if nothing else than to provide the contrast that illuminates some real genius on this board. new_thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

The good and the bad are not always from the same person and are not always in the same threads. And if we single out a person or filter out a topic, it threatens the flow of creativity and the sense of free expression that fosters true brilliance. scared.gif

When there are no threads I particularly care for, then the onus is on me to start something better. smile.gif

Great thread, btw. trink39.gif
