Given that the word "earn" is sort of ridiculous when it's this much money, but . . . he's kind of earned it, though?

Yes, he's earned highest honors in his profession.  He's really, really good at his job, so he should be paid accordingly.

We can also say that, in professional sports, "earning top dollar" has become nonsensical.

Ability and performance have taken a back seat to "the market".

Your huge contract comes from the "market"; your team pays you because they don't want another team to sign you.

If your team can't afford your market demands, they let you go, even if you're the best player/coach in the world.

That they're doing this in prime time tells you just how popular it is. I read yesterday that more people watched the Superbowl this year than watched the most watched NBA game ever.

Moving the Draft to prime time was a money-making dream come true.  It is now a game show / Reality TV drama, and the fans and media are loving every minute.  It’s made the NFL more popular, but it has also made it more corrupt.

A.J. Brown :  3 years, $96 million, $84 million guaranteed

Brown is now the highest paid NFL player who is not a QB or Nick Bosa.

The last three years he's scored 7, 11, and 5 touchdowns, averaging around 14yds per catch and 1,300 yds.  How much is that per score or per yard?

As a Fantasy Football owner who had Brown on his team last year, my assessment of his new contract is rather biased.....AGAINST HIM!!  :rage:

Since the draft is over and free agency mostly completed, I figure it's time to start this thread for the new season.

Liking what my Lions did for free agency and the draft, except disappointed at not adding a high quality edge and kicker. Gotta admire the stones to trade up to take the manchild Manu who probably won't see the field this year. This year I'd thought they'd kind of coast and just fill roster holes here and there. Holmes doesn't coast.

Atlanta's owner needs to be checked for dementia by taking Penix on top of signing Cousins. Certainly the most WTF draft moment in years.

Seems there was a roast of Tom Brady last night and Eli actually said this. I didn't watch it but have seen clips and there were some petty good zingers. Even Tom got in a good one about Kim Kardashian.

Harrison Butker just made a lot more friends.  He's learning the joys of being a public speaker in today's world....

Player Behavior Code #537:  Please let the League know before you publicly say something that might be considered controversial.

We need to prepare our "The NFL does not share his views...." press release in advance.

The Minnesota Vikings are signing Justin Jefferson to a four-year, $140 million contract extension that includes $110 million guaranteed.  The three-time Pro Bowler's massive extension not only resets the wide receiver market but makes Jefferson the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL.

Yeah, it's good work, if you can get it.....

I guess they're convinced he's their guy. I dunno about him. In a conference with Mahomes, Allen, Burrow, and Jackson, and even Herbert and Tua (fine, LABT, sure), Lawrence seems mid-tier?

It's not September yet, so you're obligated to put Herbert much higher and pick the Chargers to win the AFC.
