NeilPeartFan2112
QUOTE (BigG @ Nov 25 2004, 04:19 PM) Porntey - I just don't listen to music to be impressed, so not matter how hard he tries it leaves me cold. Other than 'listen I'm great', what is he trying to say to me ? I learnt to play drums by playing Rush songs, picking them out n that, I loved Peart's technique. Then for a good time I thought, no man you don't groove, it's all too hard, you never leave space (blah blah). But that was just me learning what I wanted to say on the drums, I guess a bit like a teenager regecting everything to find themslves. I now back in the Peart is awesome club - yeah I don't want to play like that, but he does ,and it is stupidly awesome. People I rate are the Stone Roses drummer - his groove blows me away, real dance music and the Muse drummer (he's been listening to a lot of Peart) Yes I totally agree. He always compares himself to Peart, which I think is pretty sad. If he's so great, then why does he have to compare himself to others? Peart is way better than Portnoy. Disco
My tuppence worth. Dennis Chambers is the best drummer i have seen live. I've seen him a coupe of times, once in a drum clinic where his solos had the tension and release, the dynamics of great, frnakly sex. The other time I saw him was with John Mcloughlin and DC just whiped up such deep deep sexy grooves and awesom funk. He can change the feel of a room with the most seemingly laid backof patterns. He's the real thing. on the over-rated. bill Bruforf. Saw him last year giving an over-polite display of sterill, gorrveless smug self satisfaction. he thought he was great I didn't. Oh and has no-one mentioned the genius of drumming Billy Cobham. He is a man from whom we can all learn, and not just about drumming. I agree, Dennis Chambers is probably the best overall drummer in the world today. And add Omar Hakim to that title also. Phil Collins is way underrated. Just listen to any Genesis album pre-Abacab to see what I mean. He did his best work on the two post-Peter Gabriel albums A Trick Of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering. Tommy Lee is way overrated. So is Alex Van Halen. I think Lars was great for the first two or three albums but he didn't grow. Now, 20 years later he's still playing the same crap and, honestly, I think he's lost his edge. Mike Portnoy is a machine...technically great but no soul at all. Boring. And, as a person, he's an asshole (doesn't really pertain but I thoght I'd add that anyway). QUOTE on the over-rated. bill Bruforf. 10 years ago I would have argued with you about Bruford but unfortunately, now that I'm older and wiser, I have to agree. :-(
kazzman
QUOTE (Disco @ Nov 26 2004, 04:14 PM) Dennis Chambers is the best drummer i have seen live. I had the chance to see him two summes ago with Santana. Quite frankly, out of all the drummers I've seen live, he's the one that's impressed me the most. During his solo, he stopped playing altogether, threw away his sticks, and just started doing a double bass patter for thre or four minutes straight. Towards the end of the pattern, he picked up a gatorade, chugged it down, tossed the bottle away; then he picked up a towel and wiped his face off all the while, his feet were still going. Apples and oranges, so to speak. They're two totally different drummers with different strengths. Although, taken as a whole, I think Dennis Chambers is probably accomplished at more styles than Neil. And Neil's a pretty reticent, self-effacing guy...I think he would probably agree. Is he better than Neil? IMHO, asking who out of Neil Peart and Dennis Chambers is the better drummer is not a useful question (with due respect to the poster). Up to a certain point of talent and technique you can say one drummer is better than another. For example, if one drummer can keep time and the other can't, then the one who can keep time is the better drummer. When you're at a level of skill like NP and DC then these questions fall away. They both have an abundennce of technique and imagination under their belt, the question at this level is 'What do they have to say'? DC has a lot to say about groove and funk. As for NP, I don't know how to describe approach - how would you guys describe what NP has to say? Disco PS I've just read my last post on this thread and seen the truely terrible spelling and grammer in it - apologies for that (it was posted after I returned from a rather lively dinner out with friends), your tolerence is appreciated! Revizx
Here is my two cents: -Tommy Lee is a horrible drummer - Portnoy is a peart rip off. I have the Modern Drummer 2003 festival on dvd and whenever I watch DT play they remind me of rush. Portnoy tries to copy what Peart did ages ago. - Travis Barker is overated. redstar86
Carter Beauford of the Dave Matthews Band is fairly overrated, but other than him only Lars Ulrich comes to mind.
