This thread reminds me of when I saw King Crimson/Stick Men at the HiFi bar in Sydney a few years ago.

My wife was given free tickets and I tagged along as the + 1.

Neither of us were familiar with any of the songs.

 

Anyway, it was very obvious that the musicianship was amazing. Especially the two drummer set up.

But despite the great musician ship...the songs did absolutely nothing for me.

The songs were....weird.

 

It really was a challenge to get through the whole show.

I think there are a lot of people for whom being a virtuoso is a synonym for being a "great" musician. So Malmsteen is a "great" guitarist, Joe Perry stinks. But listen to Malmsteen and Dio cover Dream On. Perry understood what would make the song sound better. Malmsteen needs to show you every trick in his bag every time out. Perry is IMO a great musician. Malmsteen stinks.

I find Malmsteen, Vai, Satriani, et al, completely uninteresting for the reasons you state. Even live, their music seems soul-less.
