I think you misunderstood me. This album is in my top 3. It always has been. I just thought it should have a deeper sound.

Geddy's sound on his Wal bass gets a lot of flak around here...from me as well. I listened to this album today and while I have always thought this was his most creative effort for bass lines, today was the first time I listened to the sound to consider why I always criticized the sound of his bass. I don't think it's his fault. The production those days (late 80s) was very bright in the bass department. His sound is different from the Rick, but it's not the fault of the bass. He is playing in a very staccato style. This changed halfway through Presto. This was before he started strumming. Anyway, I think the bass would have sounded that way had he used a jazz, the Rick, the Steinberger, or whatever. I can get a similar sound on my jazz and my modulus. I just wish I could play and write like him.

Snow storm yesterday...3". 42 degrees by evening so it's almost gone. 68 on Christmas Eve... I live at the bottom of the Adirondacks.

Countdown has a lot going on. Alex plays the bass line with his feet when Geddy is playing the keys. Geddy triggers keys when playing the bass. And, it is in changing time signatures. May not be their toughest, but it looks hard to me.

I grew up with the synth era as my new Rush. Therefore, Moving Pictures through HYF hold a place in my history...besides being great music. I felt that from 89 on, there were more tunes I did not care for. HYF was the first lp of that era to have tunes I would skip.

Oh, and the Trees... Cinderella Man. If you are a bass player, being a Rush fan is going to school... In a good way.

Back in the day when I was learning to play his bass lines the most difficult by a country mile were Circumstances and YYZ. The solo section from La Villa was another beast. Prime Mover and Turn the Page kept me up late as well. As much as people dislike it, Tai Shan has some challenging lines. In fact, HYF is one of the most challenging bass line albums since Hemispheres.

33 years for me as well. I was 11 when I first heard New World Man and Tom Sawyer (thought they would be on the same lp). I feel the same way you do. I remember that dip around presto... CP brought me back as well. It's fantastic to be closing in on 45 and being able to look back at most of my conscious life as having Rush along for the ride. Thank you for posting this. It's good to travel back in time.

Happy 41st Birthday The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
micgtr71 replied to Bigbobby10's topic in Music Of The Spheres
This album was played daily from the late 80s through the end of grad school in the early 90s. I still spin it at least twice a year. -
Bill Evans, Keith Tippett, Lyle Mays

Do You Like To "PLAY DEEP" In "THE OUTFIELD" Or Do
micgtr71 replied to RUSHHEAD666's topic in Music Of The Spheres
I have their first 3 Lps. Haven't listened to them in years. I'll give them a spin. -
I like counterparts a lot better than t4e...I only like two songs from t4e...

Most of the tunes mentioned here surprise me. The only two Rush songs I believe are deserved of the hate are Superconductor and Dog Years. The one that surprises me is Fountain of Lamneth. There is a lot of good playing in there.

I love this album for two reasons... It was the first album that came out after I had my license so it brings me back to that time of freedom, exploration, and watching the leaves change... Also, despite the sound, these songs contain some of Geddy Lee's most impressive bass lines.

What's your favorite bass Geddy uses for R40?

Also a maple board is a bit too bright for me on a jazz -

micgtr71 replied to DirkPrattLerxst's topic in R40 Tour Forum
For me it would be the Jazz with the rosewood board. That is my favorite kind of bass. Has a Rick and a Steinberger in the past and never warmed up to the tone. Geddy gets a great sound with the 4001 but I like his jazz sound better -
He does a clinic in my hometown each year around thanksgiving and puts on a hell of a shred fest. He is good at what he does and is a genuinely nice guy. Not my cup of tea but probably has the best tone I have heard from that type of playing.

Notable songs missing from the spoiler list

I think it would be interesting if none of the songs from the tour book make it into the set.... -
