  1. QUOTE (Tommy Sawyer @ Dec 17 2011, 02:42 PM)QUOTE (fledgehog @ Dec 16 2011, 11:02 PM) I would never entrust someone else, especially parents, with musical selection for me (and, in return, unless there's a release that i KNOW somebody actively wants, i will never buy music as a gift for anyone else). When buying music for someone else, there are tons of factors to consider -- what do they already have? what do they actually want? Just buying them something by "one of their favorite bands" isn't saying much. So you know who their favorite bands are -- congratulations, you probably just bought them a CD they already have. The best route to take would be an amazon gift card if you ask me. That's why you ask them (or their parents) what they want! Even asking parents what you want doesn't work.....at least for me.
  2. I voted Time Machine because it's visually appealing editing wise, but as I always believed, it would have one of the better mixes out of all the DVDs if it had the Different Stages/R30 sound. The first 3 videos they did (Exit through ASOH) come after Time Machine for me. I'd definitely love to see an official release of A View of the Palace one day...plus the Shoreline pro-shot during the Presto tour and the alleged pro-shot from the RTB tour that hasn't surfaced yet. Release those 3 pro-shots in Replay x3 Deux? That'll be a great idea.
  3. After seeing Witch Hunt on the last tour especially during the 2nd leg, I'd kill to see the guys do all of Fear live. A part V of Fear which deals with the topic of death sounds very appealing to me too.
  4. Bass Communion - Cenotaph (CD/Vinyl) Steven Wilson used 2 different mixes and within the first track, the vinyl is more ambient and the CD is more rhythmic.
  5. Unless you're a Rush fan, Porcupine Tree and Opeth. I still can't believe that there's some people who don't know Opeth....I asked some extreme metal head if he knows Opeth and he replied to me, "Opeth? What kind of metal are Opeth? I think I heard of Opeth....uh actually no, they don't sound familiar". Otherwise, I'd have to say most of my favorite bands no one's ever heard of are more ambient and drone doom based stuff along the lines of Bass Communion, Earth, and Sunn O))). That's because nobody in my group except myself considers drone and ambiance to be music. I'd probably throw in Katatonia too but because of the Skyrim reference of the band, maybe that won't be the case anymore.
  6. Yep the Wiki article is true....it was SRO/Anthem who confirmed that it is indeed live from the June 17 1980 show in Manchester. This source is coming from Power Windows. QUOTE Rush In "Guitar Hero 5" - Details Of Live Recording Confirmed Guitar Hero 5 was released September 1st, with 85 songs by 83 artists, including a previously unreleased live version of "The Spirit Of Radio" We have confirmed with SRO/Anthem that this recording was taken from an unreleased live performance in Manchester on June 17, 1980 on the Permanent Waves Tour (Producer Terry Brown, Engineer Andy Rose, mobile truck recorder- Mobile studio LONDON). Unfortunately, there are no plans at this time for a live album release of the complete Manchester show, but anything can happen...
  7. QUOTE (ColdFireYYZ @ Dec 16 2011, 07:44 PM)QUOTE (friendlyfloridian @ Dec 16 2011, 02:52 PM) QUOTE (Union 5-3992 @ Dec 16 2011, 01:52 PM) Is his first solo album any good? How does it compare to Grace For Drowning? I like both. They have their own qualities that surpass each other. I actually prefer what SW is doing in his solo work over PT. The reason is that it is more emotional and expressive than any PT album but don't misunderstand, I love PT, it is just that I am more into his solo work right now. His solo stuff in my opinion really gives you a wide open view into the man that is SW (dark and twisted but beautiful). I'm also more into his solo stuff currently. Insurgentes is just as great as GFD imo. +3 I gained more interest in his solo stuff the moment he announced that he finished recording GFD and his solo tour. And I wouldn't gotten into his work with Bass Communion if it wasn't for that artistic Lasse Hoile curtain video at the start of his solo tour shows. While I favor GFD more at the moment, I still think that it's tied with Insurgentes as one of his all time best albums he's put out ever.

    Analog Kid

QUOTE (malnar @ Dec 16 2011, 08:02 PM)QUOTE (Lost In Xanadu @ Dec 14 2011, 04:22 PM) QUOTE (PolarizeMe @ Dec 14 2011, 04:18 PM) I dunno, The Analog Kid for me fits more as the second or third song in a set (i.e. Counterparts tour/Different Stages). I can't picture it as the first song in a set, but I can't picture it near the end of a set either. LOL - I dunno why, but this sounds wierd to me. What with the song makes it not a good fit for a opening song, but Tom Sawyer or TSOR works? Not laughing at your comment, I just can't understand why The Analog Kid doesn't have that epic introduction or overture that the songs that open their shows and albums do. It jumps straight into the full band playing the riff-and it is an awesome riff-without any sort of dramatic build-up to announce its arrival. That's why its great as a second song after the first song establishes the momentum. Yes! That's exactly why I believe it should be the second or third song in the set. The Analog Kid's a momentum song IMO...I think it needs a lead-in song with a dramatic close to make the opening chords more epic, such as the end of Subdivisions which goes straight into The Analog Kid. However, if the guys do like a count in video like the Tom Sawyer intro at the start of the 2nd set on the last tour, then yeah I'd love to see it as the opener.
  9. QUOTE (An Enemy Without @ Dec 15 2011, 09:07 PM) I found a girl who I thought liked Rush, but it turned out she liked Paramore. Ouch!
  10. QUOTE (Tommy Sawyer @ Dec 11 2011, 05:15 PM) QUOTE (USB Connector @ Dec 11 2011, 10:23 AM) Since he wants an iTunes gift card, I suggest getting him a CD or two of his favorite band(s). Personally I would think it's much more thoughtful and I always enjoy having a hard copy over digital downloads any day. +2 I had a bad experience with digital downloads that I vowed to always buy hard and physical copies of albums if they are still available and in print ever since. One time I downloaded an album on iTunes and the thing got corrupted and the files were practically useless and unlistenable. I can easily bought a hard physical CD for the same amount and won't have to worry about it getting screwed up at all.

  12. QUOTE We found the footage of 'Grace'. The concerts will be released in the same format as the original releases including track listing and running time of the actual concert. But down the road when Blue-Ray technology becomes more popular and we are able to extend things out to levels beyond where we are at currently...we can then go back and release the found footage that was not on the original release. http://www.bravewords.com/news/33958 It's been almost 7 years since this article was published and you'd expect this to be out by now considering BluRay's the way to go now.
  13. According to FogoLabs, the people responsible for the DVD reissues of ESL, GUP Tour and ASOH, the GUP Tour show exists in its entirety as it was video tape instead of film which meant it was easier to make copies of it for editing purposes. They plan to do a BluRay reissue of it at some point but IDK when though. FogoLabs tried to find the unedited film reels for ESL and ASOH but they ended up empty handed when trying to contact those involved with those video shoots.
  14. From a personal point of view, these three songs stand out for me the most.... Where's My Thing? (Vital Dreams/NYC '91 boots): This is one song that I would love to see live and have an official live recording one day because I think this version total rocked harder and louder than the puny thin studio version. To add on to the energy this song has live, there's videos floating around where Geddy's hopping around everywhere and getting so into this song. Also I thought the intro they did for this song on the RTB tour was epic. Animate (R30): I don't know why, but this turned out to be my favorite arrangement of the song even if the full chorus was abridged for the first two choruses and the tempo's slower than in the studio. For some reason, I like the two arrangement changes if they're together but not if it's only one or the other (i.e. slower tempo but full arrangement on DS). I absulutely love the pitch harmonics that Alex does during the 2nd verse, and the punchiness when Geddy's bass chord comes in during the 3rd chorus (the line after "The boy inside of me") Xanadu (ESL/R30): For the ESL version...I don't have anything else to say other than it's the definitive version of this song live or studio IMO. With the R30 version, I liked how they cut it by half its length yet still able to make it sound close to a full 6 minute song as possible. The R30 version is the closest thing I have from hearing a more recent performance of Xanadu if they decide to never play it live again (which I hope they won't)

That said, here's his take on "Subdivisions". It seems like that QuetzalDash is doing all of Signals at this rate...I'm surprised there isn't a Marathon out yet cause I think that and Time Stand Still are probably the best for a Rush PMV. Fall Weather Friends for Marathon.... +2 That was what I was gonna say....

  19. QUOTE (Steel Rat @ Dec 12 2011, 01:32 AM)QUOTE (Steel Rat @ Dec 12 2011, 01:03 AM) Let me preface what I'm about to say by pointing out that I really kind've sort've really hated Power Puff Girls. It's ok for me to say that I legitimately watched it and had a legitimate judgment of it, because I was only 10 when it first aired. I managed to watch pretty much every episode, but only because I was forced to by the fact that there was nothing else on. Powerpuff Girls wasn't very clever to me, and I don't think any episode held my attention for very long. That was when I was 10 - when I fit reasonably well within the targetted demographic. I still don't like it. It's just not in my personality to like that sorta thing. That said... ... ... ... ... ... I... I... EYE... LOVE... PONIES!!! http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y159/Steel_rat/ba5f6ba5_RainbowBarf.jpg Can't explain it. I watched my first episode today and it was f***ing EXCEPTIONAL DAMNIT. My girlfriend caught me watching it and said "Are you watching My Little Pony? Are you crying?" and I said "NOTHING!" and dashed into a closet. I love rainbows, I love puppies, I love adorable, I love ponies. IT'S f***ing AWESOME!!! CAPS LOCK DOESN'T f***ing BEGIN TO DESCRIBE IT Please don't let this be the last post in the thread. Nah, we wouldn't let it be the last post here. I hope you're serious about this and not just trolling with us bronies. Welcome to the herd! I'm a fairly new brony myself.
  20. Favorite? Yes. Best? Sorry, but no....like some people said before, I'd have to say The Beatles because of their everlasting impact in music. I can't imagine any band today that aren't influenced by them in any shape or form. Basically, I think that almost every kind of music made after The Beatles revolve around them like the sun somehow. I mean, I like The Beatles in all though...they're just not my favorite like Rush is. "Favorite" and "Best" are two different things.

  22. Looks like I'm gonna have to break my piggy bank for these Sector box sets...probably gonna wait till my birthday in March to get these though since I want the flaws the band management mentioned to be fixed first.
  23. QUOTE (Oracle @ Dec 9 2011, 06:56 PM) Agreed! My personal favorite from "Signify" is Sever though; I think that's the best composed Porcupine Tree song from the pre-Gavin era. +2 Definitely one of the highlights from Signify. It was killer on the Anesthetize DVD.
  24. QUOTE (Nate2112 @ Dec 9 2011, 05:22 PM) QUOTE (Oracle @ Dec 8 2011, 03:47 PM) It's a mix between "Drown with Me" and "Anesthetize". Favorite album? "Signify" wins, hands down. Dark Matter is exceptionally good too Steven has gone on record by saying Signify was their first great album. On the other hand, he loathes The Sky Moves Sideways because of the Pink Floyd comparisons.
