  1. Wow... Continue with the pile-on, I guess. F@cking lame, IMO.
  2. Wow, I think you guys should knock off the "primate" references before the mods see this piece-of-shit thread.

Yeah, but I kind of wish there wasn't so much focus on the box office numbers. I'm sure it's turning off some who are cynical and don't want to buy into the hype. Too bad, because at heart I think Avatar is a really good sci-fi/adventure movie, regardless of the CGI, 3D, box office, etc.

QUOTE (Necromancer @ Jan 20 2010, 05:33 PM)Not bashing anything but the guys that make bajillions of money off hard working people by re-tooling another movie. How many Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Harry Potter, LOTR, Star Wars, Aliens, etc. movies have re-used the same formulas? I dunno, i think if you liked Terminator and Aliens and are any kind of sci-fi fan, you would probably like Avatar. It actually reminds me most of Aliens, except turned on its head: the aliens are the heroes and the marines are the villans.

QUOTE (Necromancer @ Jan 19 2010, 08:28 PM)Cameron: Hey George... I'm kinda stumped with an idea for my next blockbuster movie. Can you help me? Lucas: Well Jim, I've always found that if you take a classic movie, or even a foreign movie that has a classic story, and put it in space, you'll make MILLIONS off the stupid moviegoers. Cameron: Hmmmm. I think you might have a point. So what should I rip off? Lucas: I've been dying to steal a historical story. People are too dumb to remember history well, so they might not notice if you use a factual story. Cameron: Ohhhh... i got a good one. How about POCAHONTAS??? That's a great story to build upon. Just gotta figure out a way to put it in space. Lucas: Yep. Oh... and one more thing... ROBOTS. Make sure you use robots somewhere. See ya' at the bank Jim. Cameron: Thanks George. May the farce be with you. Ah, the return of Star Wars Bashing. In an Avatar thread, no less.

QUOTE (BeOhBe Bob @ Jan 19 2010, 01:49 AM)The 3D is SO DAMN REALISTIC I almost felt hot air blowing in my face when the choppers landed, dust of some sort and the reeds at the landing zone, I was ducking so I wouldn't get hit... the scene where he has to take a dive to get away from the "thing" chasing him through the woods? I felt as if I needed to take a breath to keep my head above water. Sound was perfect as well!! Yeah, I forgot to mention that the 3D was very well done and not at all intrusive. The 3D was done in a way that I would imagine the Discovery Channel or National Geographic channel would use for documentaries. That is, the 3D was used to immerse you in the environment, rather than having a bunch of stuff flying towards your face.

I saw Avatar this weekend in IMAX 3D, and was REALLY impressed! Definitely one of the best sci-fi films I've seen in years. My favorite aspect was the depiction of Panadora as a fully-realized world: landscapes, plants, animals, etc. It really was like a Roger Dean painting brought to life. The special effects were extremely impressive, especially the realism of the Na'vi. I thought the Na'vi CGI performances were very believable and expressive, probably due to using the actors' real faces and performances as a reference (as with Gollum in LOTR). The CGI work in general all seemed more realistic and believable than I've seen previously. In the entire film, I can remember only one shot that looked a little "fake" (when they were climbing up the "roots" to where the dragon creatures lived). I also thought the screenplay was pretty darn good: great pacing, very few "clunker" lines, and not nearly as political as some have made it out to be. IMO, about the only wrong note in the entire film was the Celine Dion-ish song over the end credits. Otherwise, I was extremely impressed. I'd have to say this is Cameron's best, and I'm a fan of Terminator 1&2 and especially Aliens.
  8. QUOTE (Presto-digitation @ Jan 13 2010, 11:54 AM)Let's assume I buy a reasonable/cheap $150 Sony Blu-ray, for shits and giggles instead. (likely) The most common blu-ray advice I hear is to pay a little more ($299) and just get a PS3. I've been avoiding this temptation myself, because I can see myself spending way too much time on the games. But when I go blu-ray, it probably will be the PS3. I think it's supposed to be the best overall blu-ray unit, regardless of the game aspect.
  9. Very close between Close Encounters and Raiders, but I had to go with Raiders. For me, Raiders ranks right up there with SW and ESB. But Close Encounters is not far behind.
  10. This is pretty cool: Star Wars "Cantina Band" on Chapman Stick

  13. Necro is a wrestling fan? Okay, now I can put all his comments and opinions into context.
  14. On Yes's studio albums, I would say Bill Bruford. But for live Yes, I would probably say Alan White. He is the glue that holds them together through the twists and turns of the music. On Yes Symphonic, he seemed to navigate the band and orchestra through Gates of Delerium through sheer force of will. Of course, I've only seen Yes live with Bruford once, on the Union tour. I remember being very impressed, but it was many years ago.
  15. QUOTE (Necromancer @ Jan 8 2010, 09:28 PM)When did I get personal during any of my attacks on Star Wars or the fans in general? I would like to see what you think "getting personal" really is. Cuz I assure you, I haven't gotten personal with any of my insults to fans of this series. For clarification, I believe "getting personal" would be to bring up a point about someone's life outside the realm of this topic. It's not about "getting personal" or bringing up someone's personal life. It's about attacking the person as a way to make your argument, or the "ad hominem" fallacy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem Instead of saying... "Star War sucks! The dialogue is cheesey, the acting is bad, the characters are one-dimensional, etc." ...you say something like... "Star Wars sucks! You fans are all geeks, losers, and virgins! Get a f**cking life! " You belittled Presto-Digitation's contributions to TRF and said Rush Cocky must be a virgin. You constantly bash SW fans as geeks and nerds, which is astonishingly hypocritical given some of your own interests (comic books, Powerpuff Girls). Does that help?
  16. QUOTE (1-0-0-1-0-0-1 @ Jan 8 2010, 09:37 AM)TSS is right in that last post, of course. The last thing we want to do is give the impression that we don't want differing or opposing opinions on any topic, Star Wars included. There's no problem with going into the SW threads and expressing an opposing opinion about the movies or their characters. That's normal message board debate. There's nothing wrong with saying the Ewoks and Jar Jar are abominations and Lucas should be eaten by Jabba The Hut for creating them. Or that Lucas in an idiot for re-editing Ep. IV and making Greedo shoot first. Or even, "Star Wars sucks." No, what a couple of guys are doing is coming into these SW threads and ragging on the people who like SW, not just the movies. They're doing simply to get under people's skins and start an argument. And it's working. The SW fans fire back and we have personal attacks flying around. That goes beyond simply not liking the movies, and that's what has to stop. I suggested to the SW fans to ignore the trollish posts of those select few haters. That doesn't absolve what the haters are doing, but it does help to keep these threads civil. The "Star Wars trolls" are acting like children when they try and needle people as opposed to just hating on the movies, so don't feed the trolls! If you want to hate on SW, go for it. But don't get personal with people in these threads. It's no different in here than in any other part of the board. Thank you! I was going to post this same observation last night. The problem is not Star Wars, it's all the personal, ad hominem sniping against individual members and SW fans in general. I think the first hater post in the "Question about Star Wars" thread (page 2) set the tone we've been seeing all week, with two jibes directed at PD and a bashing of SW fans in general. I don't mind hearing what the haters say about the movies, and would probably agree with some of their criticisms (especially about the prequels). But why all the personal sniping?
  17. QUOTE (Hatchetaxe&saw @ Dec 25 2009, 07:29 AM)Santa delivered the live box set!!! The Rainbow disc is superb. Happy Christmas fellow MOTSers!! I just picked up the live box as well. Hate to admit it, but I haven't heard most of these before. Genesis Live is pretty cool, but HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, Seconds Out is absolutely unreal! I'm still in the honeymoon phase, but I think Seconds Out could be the definitive prog rock live album. Phil, Chester, and Bruford are all absolutely on fire! The versions of Suppers Ready and Cinema Show are breathtaking! I am really, really, really, really impressed! I only wish there was a full video of this show.
  18. Jeez, another Star Wars pissing contest? I couldn't decide between SW and LOTR, so I voted for SW just because of all the recent bashing.
  19. QUOTE (1-0-0-1-0-0-1 @ Jan 4 2010, 05:53 PM)I still think Star Wars and comic books are equally geeky, and I still think you're just as much of a geek as these SW fans (not that there's anything wrong with that -- I'm a casual fan of both). I've seen pics of the people who attend both comics and SW conventions. I've seen them dress up in costumes. Both are VERY GEEKY. Make no mistake. I know there are degrees of geekdom for all genres, but I've always thought that comic store guys were by far the nerdiest. The last time I was in a comic store, there was a table of guys in their late thirties playing Dungeons & Dragons. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
  20. QUOTE (Necromancer @ Jan 3 2010, 10:58 AM)It all started with these two massive star wars freaks that would come into the comic shop I hung out at. So these Star Wars nerds were even geekier than the usual comic store nerds?
  21. QUOTE (metaldad @ Oct 19 2009, 09:34 AM)QUOTE (tangy @ Oct 19 2009, 09:29 AM) QUOTE (Xanadoood @ Oct 19 2009, 08:59 AM) QUOTE (metaldad @ Oct 19 2009, 08:51 AM) Of all the great players in the world they pick these three ? Yeah i was thinking the same thing dude. I mean, i can see Page for his legendary status, but the other two, those two were chosen for their ability to sell movie tickets. A very sad state and reason not to watch this crap Looks like they're just trying to represent some different generations of players: 70s, 80s, 00s. Sure, they could have picked three old guys from the 70s (Page, Clapton, Beck?) but who under the age of 40 would likely check that out?

QUOTE (Rush Cocky @ Dec 25 2009, 11:14 PM)QUOTE (ReRushed @ Dec 25 2009, 10:42 PM) QUOTE (Rush Cocky @ Dec 25 2009, 11:33 PM) QUOTE (rushgoober @ Dec 25 2009, 06:41 PM) You always gotta love people putting a movie down they haven't even seen. Seen enough in a preview, plus the 1,000 or so commercials on the topic. I've read several reviews, both positive and negative, and I came away not eager to see the film. The negative reviews left me with the impression I would not enjoy the film because it has an alleged agenda I don't particularly agree with. I feel I know the reasons why some people like it and why some people don't like it. I'll eventually see the film because I've enjoyed so many Cameron films in the past. I just want the hype to die down so I can watch the film as objectively as possible. My take, don't believe the hype, for now. Did you guys have a problem with those liberal, tree-hugging Ewoks in Return of the Jedi?
  23. That was great! Here's one (original series spoof) with even more Tom Sawyer: http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/76fab067d...iler?rel=player
  24. I like both, but voted for Col. Potter. My favorite era was probably right around seasons 4-5, when they had Potter, Hawkeye, BJ, Frank, Margaret, Radar, Klinger, and Fr. Mulcahy. The writing around this time was just right for me, starting to get more serious but not as serious as the last couple of seasons. (Though generally I do prefer the later seasons to the first couple.)
  25. Great poll idea, but how can you forget Tears?
