  1. Hartford didn't quite make it (neither did New York, but I wouldn't expect it to be anywhere near that list anyway). I know my school made a 5 most dangerous campuses list last year though!
  2. https://twitter.com/#!/NewYorker/status...599846745931777 f**k. yes.
  3. I don't really pay attention to the R&RHF. tbf, the only ones on that list that even qualify as true rock and roll are SRV, and maybe the Doobie Brothers (Bon Jovi qualifies too I guess, but they don't deserve to be in anything)
  4. sounds too over-produced to me. my take on the album's sound is that they are trying really hard to sound modern, but still sound dated in the end. the music itself is bland and forgettable. not BAD per se, but it simply lacks the element of intrigue.
  5. ^^ Yeah exactly, part of being a good musician is having to compensate for hardware malfunctions without losing flow and smoothness.
  6. Harry Connick, Jr. was considering sending his daughter to my high school. I gave him a tour of the school. He requested me specifically after seeing me play piano at the school's open house earlier that year.
  7. QUOTE (Oracle @ Sep 27 2011, 07:58 PM) Well, this cries "I want to be King Crimson". hahaha, you really think Steven Wilson of all people is desperate enough to have to resort to ripping off artists like King Crimson? He's created his own style that he's perfectly good at, which, as far as I'm concerned, creates the basis of the new album. The fact that it has heavy and noticeable King Crimson influence isn't a bad thing at all, and Wilson is far from being "out of his realm". Perhaps you just don't realize how large his realm truly is.
  8. the sample at the end is recorded from an actual 911 call -- supposedly from lead singer Julie Christmas whose boyfriend was beating her at the time of the call http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3tlPgLPdV8 i should warn that this one IS rap (eminem) and contains a ton of curses. in case either of those things is enough to deter you from even clicking on it. i'd say both of the above are far more disturbing than anything else posted in this thread yet
  9. QUOTE (Rush! @ Sep 27 2011, 12:36 PM) Absolute worst / least favorite singles of 2011: Lady Gaga - 'Born This Way', 'The Edge of Glory' say what you want about GaGa's music, her new album is catchier than herpes.
  10. QUOTE (greg2112 @ Sep 26 2011, 05:42 PM) Wish there were more new songs in the setlist. are you serious? They play 5 out of the 8 songs on the new album per night, and cumulatively they've already played all of them except for Lost Not Forgotten. in terms of time, new songs make up close to 50% of the setlist...and you still think that's not enough? Maybe if they were still doing Evening With shows they could afford to play the entire album nightly, but they have to appease amateur fans and people who are seeing their first show this tour as well.
  11. it fits the theme -- it's like getting into a time machine and traveling back to a time when vinyls were actually relevant!
  12. 6th row in Albany for $50 USD...that's a damn good deal if you ask me.
  13. QUOTE They are not doing what is IMO the best song on the new album ,Lost Not Forgotten , but we get a Drum solo and 2 acoustic songs ? I have no problem with acoustic songs, but not at a d.t. show that is not "An Evening With" I'm sure Lost Not Forgotten will appear in the rotation eventually. As it is, they're already doing more new songs than they usually do per show. As for the acoustic songs, it's a good idea, IMO, especially since most of the songs that precede it in the setlist are on the heavier side. It's not like they're playing a whole acoustic set, just a couple short soft things to show off their more vulnerable side, something that you will get with any group from your local bar band to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. I am more of a fan of the Silent Man/Beneath the Surface combo than the second night's combo (Wait For Sleep/Far From Heaven), however. QUOTE It looks like they switched it up from the first night and brought in BAI Yes, but this was more or less to be expected. Now that Mangini is broken in and comfortable with the band and material, they can start rotating songs again. I think it was a little stupid of them to break up Far From Heaven and Breaking All Illusions, though (but they seem to have a history of splitting up connected songs like that -- have they ever played Wait for Sleep and Learning to Live back to back? how about Vacant and Stream of Consciousness?) Like I said earlier, I'm a bigger fan of the guitar-based ballads than the piano-based ones (despite being a pianist myself O_o). I hope I get Beneath the Surface at my show. ---- As for the drum solo, I feel like it's a one-tour thing because they're proud and want to show off their new drummer. If you just got Mike f***ing Mangini to join your band, you would want to include a drum solo every night too. I'll admit I haven't checked out any of his solos from this tour yet, but I'm willing to bet that they're far more interesting musically, technically and rhythmically than anything Portnoy (or a large number of other drummers) is capable of coming up with.
  14. I see no similarities to Led Zepplin in any of Rush's music. A lot of their early stuff is heavily influenced by Led Zeppelin, however.
  15. i actually like the idea of ticket and merchandise prices going up in exchange for paid recordings disappearing. That's how bands make most of their money anyway, and a larger portion of your ticket price makes it into the band's hands than what you paid for your CD. Also keep in mind that recorded music was originally meant to capture and document performance, it was never meant to be the primary means of distribution.
  16. QUOTE (Nate2112 @ Sep 25 2011, 03:28 PM) ESKIMO I take offense to that word, the proper term is "Inuit".
  17. a lot of these (like ozric tentacles, holdsworth, chick, planet x), i wouldnt be able to listen to as pure background music as theyre far too engaging musically.
  18. QUOTE (J2112YYZ @ Sep 23 2011, 10:27 PM) But Andy as manager? Seriously? yeah, that threw me a bit too. i was certain it would be Jim. He seemed the most logical choice, and theyve been setting him up for it for years.
  19. QUOTE (Oracle @ Sep 25 2011, 02:36 AM) The Great Debate? Now why would they include that? I can't stand that song; it just sounds so preachy that I can't imagine hearing it live. it's anything but preachy -- it does a pretty good job of representing both sides (hence the great "debate" as the title). that being said, I'm not a fan of the lyrics at all -- but that doesn't get in the way of the fact that it's one of the most solid things they've ever done musically. it has one of Portnoy's most tasteful drum parts, which probably sounds even better under Mangini's hands, and some of James' strongest singing from the time period as well.
  20. solid setlist, IMO. nice to see that they're going easy on the TOT-BCSL era stuff. Bridges is a perfect opener (although, it would work very well as an ending too). I'm LOVING the inclusion of an acoustic section too. Was kind of hoping for Far From Heaven/Breaking All Illusions as a closer, and i wish they'd still play Peruvian Skies and/or Caught in a Web, but hey -- you can't get everything! I hope the setlist is the same/similar when I go to see them in October.
  21. tonight's setlist: *SPOILERS* 1. Bridges in the Sky 2. These Walls 3. Build Me Up, Break Me Down 4. Endless Sacrifice 5. Drum Solo 6. Ytse Jam 7. Fatal Tragedy 14. Outcry Encore 15. Under a Glass Moon
