  1. Next Saturday (12th) I'm off to see the Jim Jones Revue and then a bit of a dilemma. On the 23rd I have the choice of The Answer (Academy, Newcastle) or Wishbone Ash (The Cluny). I have seen both bands loads of times and like both venues, but I'm probably going for the 'Ash'.
  2. I was very disappointed with Signals and it started my alienation from the band. I wanted loud, strong guitars and I was getting wimpy keyboards. The songs have grown on me to a degree, but Signals will never be a favourite. I think the biggest shock was going from Hemispheres to Permanent Waves. Such a huge change from what had gone before.
  3. Do the Hucklebuck - Coast to Coast. Thank the Lord they were one-hit wonders. Probably my most detested song of all time, although most of Genesis's back catalogue could give it a good run (no I'm not a fan of Genesis).
  4. Don't listen to them! Save your money and punch the person that recommended this band to you. I have wasted hours (possibly days) listening to various albums from the Genesis cannon and it's time I'm never going to get back. Boring! And Phil Collins is a member.

The album would have been a 5 star classic but for 'Eyes'. The Shed (Subtle) and the title track are excellent. As for Rising - I loved this album, but as I've got older it doesn't hold the same appeal. Perhaps I overplayed the vinyl. Even back then I didn't see why people loved Light in the Black. I could quite honestly turn the track off, especially after the magic of Stargazer. After 'Down To Earth' I lost interest in Blackmore's constant changing of the line-up and the more commercial direction he was looking to go towards. Since You've Been Gone ranks below 'Eyes' IMHO and should only be listened to at weddings. Get the hell outta here, Rainbow Eyes is a great tune. More rock bands should write ballads like that: I'm outta here! It's a pile of pants. Martin Birch should have said, "Nice tune lads, but let's put that on the B-side of the wedding single when we do Since You've Been .... Now go and write a song that suits the rest of the album, something that actually rocks perhaps? Remember the title of the album - Long Live ROCK 'N' ROLL! It's not poor your bleeding heart out over some pixie dust fairies with coloured eyes! Blackmore - remember the ethos for 'In Rock'? This band isn't about minstrels and flutes." Rant over.

  7. I went with III - love the whole album and the cover was fantastic. There has to be something for everyone on each of the 8 studio albums and probably Coda as well. I just wish the 'reformation' would go away - Bonham is dead and he CAN'T be replaced.
  8. The new album is canny. So good stuff and Morse's guitar seems to fly.
  9. I have to say that I saw them live a few times and the albums don't really do them justice. Studio-wise go for Rise II, it's the best of their releases. If you want to see a good, young English band and a three piece to boot go for The Virginmarys. The whole band is so sharp and check out their album 'King of Conflict - you WILL NOT be disappointed.
  10. I can’t do exact dates as I’m over 50 now and the memory isn’t what it used to be, but here goes. October ‘ish 78 – Hemispheres (vinyl) November ’78 – 2112 (vinyl) December ’78 – Archives (vinyl). Purchased instead of buying family Christmas presents, which then had to be bought nearer the day. March ’79 – Home recording of All the World’s a Stage (cassette) in preparation of seeing the band live Permanent Waves – on release (vinyl - I have the original cover with the newspaper headline) A Farewell To Kings – Can’t remember exact dates and not sure why I waited so long to buy it. It might have been because I didn’t have much cash Moving Pictures - on release (vinyl) Exit... Stage Left – on release (vinyl) Signals – on release (cassette) Grace Under Pressure – No idea, but it was the LAST vinyl LP I bought. I was losing interest in Rush as they were getting away from guitar-based music – in my opinion. Or was it just me losing interest in music in general as different priorities took over? In the early 90’s I did buy an early CD version of Hemispheres, which is my favourite Rush album and my youngest daughter loved the cover. Then in the late 90’s/early 21C I rediscovered the band, starting with Different Stages and then Roll the Bones. This was quickly followed up with Presto and Test for Echo because the artwork was more interesting. Hold Your Fire, Counterparts and Power Windows were next. Along the way I also picked up the CD versions of the earlier albums. These purchases included the re-mastered ATWAS, bought in Oct’2006 (Tracks , York). I picked up Vapor Trails when it was released as the fire was burning again. Eventually, I picked up the re-mastered version of A Show of Hands, but rarely play it. Following Vapor Trails, I've tried to get the new releases (live recordings, DVDs and albums) as it has been released. Some of the original CD’s have been replaced with re-mastered versions or the deluxe version and in May I succumbed to buying the Sector box-sets. In short, I’m a marketing man’s dream! Call me sad if you want, but a little like Circumstantial Tree, I used to have a spreadsheet (I said you could call me SAD!) detailing artist, LP, year of release, date of purchase, where bought from and price paid. It was kind of interesting to see how much cash I spent on CDs over the year/years.
  11. Slightly off topic, because there isn't any Heartbreakers creditted, but Petty's Highway Companion is a beautiful album. It would probably sit in my top 10 albums.
  12. I was 16 when I discovered Rush and the introduction was Hemispheres, but what an introduction!
  13. Loved them for years and Overkill is probably my favourite with Orgasmatron a close second. Love the debut as well. Best song - Capricorn.
  14. I think I've said this before somewhere, but 'Flick' is Powerage's bastard son. Powerage is THE best AC/DC album IMO, but the rawness of Flick just sits nicely after the slickness of Mutt Lange produced albums. Very underrated.
  15. I paid £1.50 (about $3) to see AC/DC in '78, my first gig. First Rush gig in '79 was about £3.50 - 4.00. I paid not far short of £150 (don't tell the wife) for Glasgow tickets on 30th May. How times have changed. Last time i saw AC/DC, we had to join the fan club for £?? and then £60. for tickets. It gets worse - a crowd surfer broke my glasses, another £250. I hate stadium/arena gigs.
  16. King of Conflict - The Virginmarys, released Feb 2013
  17. Long Live Rock 'N' Roll/Rainbow Eyes - Rainbow. Superb LP until the final song. London Calling/Spanish Bombs - The Clash. How to spoil the greatest double LP of all time.
  18. Went to see the best new three piece in the world last night at Think Tank - The Virginmarys. Blew the roof off the place. I used to think Patrick from the Black Keys was the hardest working drummer, but the bairn in 'the Marys' is phenomenal. Met them after the show and they were very down to earth if a little knackered.
  19. AC/DC - Powerage Black Sabbath - Vol4 UFO - Obession UFO - The Wild, The Willing and The Innocent Rainbow - Rising Motorheed - Motorhead Motorheed - Overkill Judas Priest - British Steel Scorpions - Animal Magnetism The Virginmarys - King of Conflict
  20. Ken Wood and the Chefs (personal favourite) Toxic Kangaroo Babies Nasti Pasti I, Ludicrous
  21. I've not heard the Metallica versions and I'm not going to go out of my way to find them, the originals are good enough for me. I was lucky to catch the original 'Heed' a few times and they were a tremendous band. The first time was as support to AC/DC, at the Newcastle Mayfair, January '80! Yes, AC/DC with Bon - an amazing gig.
  22. Off the top of me head AC/DC - Highway To Hell - Side One Van Halen - Women and Children First - Side One The Clash - London Calling - Side One
  23. What does it mean to me? To be avoided at all costs! Despite repeated attempts to 'get' Genesis, including listening to their many albums/pile of shite, I just don't - end of...
