  1. QUOTE (Tortoise and Hare @ Jun 29 2008, 08:55 PM) We just picked up the newly released, Dream Theater Greatest Hit (singular ON PURPOSE!) (. . . and 21 other pretty cool songs) First of all - - CLEVER title!!!! Secondly - - is mentioned as one of the inspirations for the band's "epic side" notably in "Seasons, Metropolis, and Octavarium". Mike Portnoy wrote a nifty and reflective essay explaining the reasoning behind this compilation. He attributes DT's "Dark Side" (metallic) to Iron Maiden , Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, and Metallica. DT's "Light Side" (melodic) to U2, Pink Floyd, Journey , and Peter Gabriel. DT's "Epic Side, possibly the one for which we are best known and which has generated songs that are very progressive in nature, technically acrobatic, and very long," to Yes, , and Genesis. Ridiculous Note: This is a two-disc set. When we got home and opened it up - - only one disc! Tortoise had to truck on back to Target for the exchange. While at the store - - and there were only two left on the shelves! - - another set was missing a disc. Thank goodness third time was the charm! Hare Aha other DT best-of lovers! One disc for a mood!
  2. I love this show! anybody got news about the second season?
  3. QUOTE (Hatchetaxe&saw @ Jun 26 2008, 10:10 AM) Listened to TB III a lot yesterday, I was surpised how good it sounded. However, Earth Moving is trying my patience. It's a bit wet. Holy with Lord Belew is good, but then it seems to go downhill rapidly. Any Earth Moving defenders out there?
  4. I can't wait! although the fact that I'll have to watch it with the crappy french voices sucks.
  5. Nice.... But not as good as a flying pig

  7. QUOTE (treeduck @ Jun 14 2008, 11:38 PM) The trouble with Mike Oldfield for me is that once you've seen him do Blue Peter, including redoing their theme tune, complete with a totally gay WWI-style video, he does sort of diminish quite a bit in a way that's hard to quell. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doap3hodYKo AAH come on, that was made for kids! and I forgot, Exposed: Live, is brillant! we want another live album!
  8. I read somewhere there was a song with Carl Palmer on drums, anyone knows wich one it is?
  9. QUOTE (Jaye @ Jun 11 2008, 07:23 PM) QUOTE (Hatchetaxe&saw @ Jun 11 2008, 04:00 PM)QUOTE (Jaye @ Jun 11 2008, 02:47 PM) QUOTE (Hatchetaxe&saw @ Jun 11 2008, 03:20 PM)Question for you Oldfield nuts out there. The single Shine, with the great Jon Anderson, does not appear on an album. (Or if it does please enlighten me) Is it available on a compilation? I've checked all compilations available, but no joy. The 7" and 12" are available. It is on the last compilation that was released, called The Platinum Collection. It's a 3-disc set, and Shine is on disc 3. You can see the track info here http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v250/Jett_Moonwing/Platinum.jpg Doh! Thanks Jaye, I checked Elements and the one with the bird on the cover, didn't see this one!! You're a star! Thanks. No problem! Yeah, that's the only one Shine is on. The video of it is on the Elements DVD though. (and it's up on YouTube of course ) That's like the ultimate 80's video
  10. AHA! Finally an Oldfield thread, you know, Jaye and I are also on an Oldfield forum I'll make it simple, the man's a genius! He can do every kinds of music and do it well, Prog, classic, new age, electro, pop etc... His guitar playing is his best "thing", in fact he's the guy who gave me the idea of starting guitar. And his tone with that 63 SG Junior is simply perfect (I'm saving money to build a replica ). My favorites albums are TB1, Ommadawn Platinum Crisis, Amarok and The Songs of Distant Earth. I hope he will amaze us again
  11. My views on Amnesiac really changed, now, I'll just say, I love it
  12. Dogs, pure masterpiece. That's THE that made me realize how good Gilmour is

  14. MY GOD! Knives Out is pure genius!
  15. In Rainbows is great but it needed time to grow on me, Hail To The Thief (my favorite) was more direct for me.
  16. Who here like Amnesiac? I just don't get it this album, Kid A was much better
  17. QUOTE (LoneStar Boogie @ May 22 2008, 01:24 PM) As far as new PT, don't forget that Gavin Harrison is now a part of King Crimson, as well. That could complicate things a bit as far as schedules go. Nah, fripp and wilson know how to handle that kind of thing the must have 10000 I.Q points each, we can trust them!
  18. I have been watching all the pics of the thread: AM I GAY?
  19. Peter: "Sorry nothing personal, but the last time I accepted a coupon from a giant chicken it turned out bad..." Love these fights
  20. QUOTE (Did Lee Squat? @ May 19 2008, 12:04 AM) OK I just bought Fear of a Blank Planet (my first PT album) the other day on a whim and after several listens I'm pretty dang impressed. I've only got one question: Are all of PT's albums as dark and gloomy as FOABP? It just ain't a very happy album and I find it a bit depressing. well yes, you have some "happy" songs on Deadwing, Stupid Dream and, Lightbulb Sun, but not buch. (Great album huh?
  21. How sad! 55 is really young!
  22. AH!! I can't wait, it's gonna be a kick ass movie
