In Canada, we've had chip & PIN technology for a while now. Our EMV machines have two, sometimes three, ways to process payment: a slot to insert the portion of the card containing the chip, the familiar mag stripe reader, and in some cases the reader used for "tap" or "wave" purchases. While the machines have the ability to swipe cards, businesses put themselves at risk if they allow a chip card to be swiped--a big reason we have the mag stripe reader is to accommodate our American friends :) The financial institutions here provided customers with chip & PIN-equipped credit and debit cards in advance of the deadline to switch; no one I know had to request the cards, so hopefully it will be that convenient for you, too! I very much prefer chip & PIN to the mag stripes, for what it's worth. It's quick and easy, more secure, and no autographs are necessary!
