Any further explanation? :) There songs suck! Lol, point taken, though I do disagree. :P Do you like Toto? I love Hold The Line and Rosana, was never really struck by Africa, and I haven't heard them too much beyond that. I do actually own their debut on vinyl, but the time I listened nothing really stood out to me but some average attempts at disco or something and of course Hold The Line.

These four bands all commercially peaked right around the same time and their collective sound dominated charts and airwaves during that time. Their many hits are classics, their rise to fame memorable at least, but even more telling of their similarity are their catastrophic falls in the mid to late eighties. Though each band's story is different, not one of them managed to make it out of the decade unscathed, and some faced greater semi-breakups than others. Seemingly over night each band fell in to that shamed category of popularity known as "has-been" or "washed-up," though modern incarnations and tours have proved very successful to their old fans. I love Nirvana mainly for nostalgia, as like many they shaped my formative years. But I will be honest and say they have some really awful moments...and every album is tainted by filler. I enjoy bands like Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. But I don't really associate them with grunge, although truth be told I don't really know what grunge is haha! I totally get that. I think I was just exposed to the kind of angst and super distorted screaming melodicism that Nirvana popularized in other forms with other ingredients added in before I really heard much Nirvana, so when I heard them I was like "why is this special?" I do enjoy them sometimes, I even own Nevermind on vinyl (truth be told I bought it one day because I decided I would make an event out of actually giving them a chance for once), but I just never relate to the supposedly universal love and respect for them, especially any ideas of Kurt Cobain being one of the best guitarists ever (which I do not believe). Also, I don't think anyone really knows what grunge is. Lol.

Listened to The Joy Of Motion by Animals As Leaders. Well, my first response is my mind probably would've been blown if I'd not yet been introduced to Dream Theatre (don't have much other experience with that sounscape, guitar tone, heaviness, etc.). While I did enjoy it, and while the artist is obviously extremely talented, I wasn't a big fan of the seeming strategy of blowing away and dizzying listeners with heaviness, difficult rhythms, complex passages, technical profficiency, and a lack of memorable hooks. It was just kind of a long relentless blaze of heavy techno metal stuff (forgive me for not knowing the precise sub-genre). It would make great video game backing music, but I wouldn't compare anything I just heard to the likes of YYZ or La Villa. Cool experience though, ty for the rec! Not the biggest Nirvana fan, gotta say. Pearl Jam was miles better IMO, but then again they really weren't as similar as their common "grunge" label would imply.

IMO Aerosmith had epic highs and awful lows both before and after rehab. My top two albums of theirs are Pump and Get Your Wings, go figure. And if you want repetitive and boring, I'd turn to the filler on side 2 of Toys before Livin' On The Edge. I'd also be hard pressed to say You See Me Cryin' is a better ballad than just plain Cryin' or What It Takes. They were rock masters in both eras.

You can create music without the knowledge of writing notation down on a piece of paper. Eddie Van Halen claims he can't read or write music either. I know it's possible, obviously, but I want to know how they do it. If a melody goes through their mind, what do they do since they can't run to a piece of paper and scribble the music down? Though I'm pretty sure Freddie Mercury could read and write music, at some point in the 80s he decided that he wouldn't waste a lot of time recording every musical idea that popped into his head or writing it down, declaring if it was worth recording he would remember it. Just another example. Some musicians work purely from memory.

Listened to a lot of Genesis today. Finding that SEBTP is becoming very gradually more enjoyable, and I do already quite enjoy it. Still not finding it as exhuberantly brilliant as Foxtrot or as mesmerizingly beautiful as WAW, but I can see consciously how the peices on that album fit together to create a musical journey. It's just not so obvious.

Maybe a little bit, hehe.

I've get some mixed feelings about SEBTP. On one hand, it sounds absolutely brilliant and has extremely masterful playing, but most of the songs don't capture me the way they do on Foxtrot or Nursery Cryme. They all start out great but most seem to kind of go nowhere. But I'll give it a few more close listens and wait for some other shred of brilliance jump out at me.

Genesis have taken a while to hit me too, but I've really been getting into them lately enough to justify them being a possible fourth or fifth favorite band. I agree with Mick about Supper's Ready. I didn't get it at all at first, didn't even like it much. Now every time I listen to it is mesmerizing and emotional. I mostly changed after I gave it a second chance and read some slight explainations of the lyrics online.
