  1. Which boggles my mind since Clockwork Angels is, IMO, their greatest work since this album—nostalgia aside. Agreed (about CA).
  2. I learned about the band a few months later, in April. The album holds a dear place in my heart.
  3. That dancing has nothing at all to do with the music.
  4. I loved p/g when it came out (and still do) and saw it as an extension of Signals, which I also like. Then Power Windows was released. I didn't care for it at the time, and have only come to like some of the songs after seeing them performed live this last tour. I bought Hold Your Fire when it came out, hoping the band had reverted back to a previous musical style, but that was not the case. I didn't like HYF back then, and I still do not like it now. For me, HYF had the band progressing into a different style of music from the things they had done in the past. They had lost their power, their intensity; basically, the music had no balls. (Was this the album that had them first venturing into jazz and funk rhythms? I *hate* jazz and funk.) I also dislike female singers for the most part, and now all of a sudden my (former) favourite band was using a female guest singer! What a blow that was. The end result was that HYF was the last Rush album I bought or listened to for over ten years, until they again drastically changed their style.
  5. I started listening to them in 1980 and they immediately became my favourite band. The biggest differences between then and now, stylistic changes aside, were the ease of finding other Rush fans, and the information that is available about the band. Back then I think the only other person I knew who was into Rush was my boyfriend at the time. Now I know many other people who like them. That's partially because I know more people in general, but also because with the Internet it is much easier to get to know/stay in touch with/learn about friends. And music is much better if you can share it. The Internet is also the reason why it's so easy to get information about the band, their plans, and their tours. In the early 80s the only information I ever saw was in the few magazines I bought, and the only tour info was in the Sunday paper when tickets went on sale. Now we've got band websites, Wikipedia, online interviews, fan pages, online ticket sales and show schedules, etc. etc. It's incredibly easy to become immersed in the band, and younger people may not realize it wasn't always this way.
  6. He is right about the 90's stuff however..... :finbar: Ayup, he is.
  7. I have that Rush "cover" album and it's kinda fun.
  8. I'm quite happy to say that with a couple exceptions (politicians), I have no idea who these people are in these photos. In general I think that if you are tabloid fodder then, yes, please shut the F up.
  9. Why are you happy? You shouldn't be happy about no arguing! You are wrong and blah blah blah etc! ;)
  10. When "Red Sector A" was played during the last tour there were a couple venues (I went to multiple shows) where the mix was a little off and the song ended up sounding like a (good) raging techno dance song. It was weird hearing such a somber topic as an upbeat song. Re: The original topic... I first got into Rush in early 1980 and was around when Grace Under Pressure came out. (And as someone else said, it's not "GUP", it's "p/g"--it even says so on the cover.) I did like Signals, different as it was, and that album got me way into new wave and alternative music (a genre I ended up working in in later years). I also liked p/g, although not quite as much as Signals.
  11. Warning: Contains spoilers I thought Smaug was done very well. He looked great, was impressive, and moved very well. But the scenes at the end of the movie just didn't make sense. First of all, Smaug is immersed in molten gold. (We'll just disregard how that huge mass of metal was melted in about three minutes.) Gold melts at 1945F/1063C. There is no biological material that can withstand this sort of temperature as proteins denature at 212F/100C or less. Yet Smaug emerged unscathed from the molten gold. Maybe his scales protected him? Well, even if his scales were made of something with a higher melting point that gold, either a) heat conducting through the scales would kill the living tissue underneath, or b) molten gold would have entered the body through the missing scale, which we know is Smaug's vulnerable spot. Even if we dismiss all this and attribute it to "magic" it still doesn't seem plausible. To me, that's where they jumped the shark.
  12. I saw The Hobbit last night. A friend said it best: The movie should be called "Inspired by The Hobbit." I think after the third movie is released someone needs to edit them all down into one good ~2 hour Hobbit movie. There is way too much made-up filler material. The CGI isn't that good in parts (some things look "fake", some creatures don't move realistically). And the big end scene is not believable, even when attempting to suspend disbelief. I really wish Peter Jackson had been as true to the story as he was to LotR.
  13. I recently read "Iron Maiden Running Free" by Garry Bushell and he talked about how DiAnno had issues way back then with not being very professional. Sounds like he hasn't changed much :( Glad to hear it! And wow, 100 thousand people in Rio? I know some of those Rio shows get packed, but that sounds insane.
  14. What's DiAnno doing now? How does he sound? And how was that Ghost/Slayer/Maiden show? I heard about it, but alas, I'm up here in North America. I hope it was great. I don't see many shows anymore in my old age. This year I've seen: Rush - Fort Lauderdale Rush - Chicago Rush - Calgary/Red Deer

    Rush live video

I recently came across this live Rush video. Man, the guys really have improved over the years. :outtahere: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZrv9BQFvSA
  16. Here in California it's been unseasonably warm. Early this morning it was 49F, and that's only the 3rd time it's been that cold this season. A couple weeks ago we had about 24 hours of rain—the first real rain we've had since early this year. We are heading towards a severe drought, and a severe fire season next year, unless something changes and soon.
  17. Alex is known as an accomplished painter. He has donated at least one prior to this to benefit the Kidney Foundation. I've seen a few of his pieces (do a Google search for 'alex lifeson painting' to see a couple), but this is the first surreal piece I've seen him do.
  18. I play RB, but usually only as a singer. I've tried playing bass to Rush's songs and man, those time signatures are weird! My personal best is that I got a numbered ranking when singing the first part of 2112 (usually you only get something like "You scored in the top 68%!"). And yeah, I usually can't convince my husband/"bandmates" to play more than one or two Rush songs when playing RB.
  19. Also, if anyone ever wants to convince someone to not do LSD, just show them this webpage. "If you do too much acid you'll end up writing deranged diatribes like this!"
  20. I was 16 in 1980 and the boyfriend I had just started dating was a Rush fan. He played me Permanent Waves and I was hooked. The boyfriend only lasted a few years, but I'm still a Rush fan today :) Sadly, I haven't been a fan through all of that time. I did not like the direction they were going in the late 80s/early 90s so I stopped listening to them for a few years :sigh:
  21. I've been feeling the same way lately. Add in that we had the CA tour hot on the heels of the Time Machine tour, without having to wait years in between. Wheee!
