  1. QUOTE (metaldad @ Jul 24 2012, 04:38 PM) QUOTE (Powderfinger @ Jul 24 2012, 04:08 PM) I'm currently on a major Pink Floyd kick, and am interested in reading a new book on the band. So far I've only read Saucerful of Secrets. Is Comfortably Numb by Mark Blake considered the best book available? Thank you for any and all advice. Get the book by Nick Mason, i think it's called Inside Out . Fantastic book and by the end you will know why Waters was hated by the rest of the group. This is an interesting insight. I read some reviews of Mason's book that criticized it for not getting underneath the surface and pulling punches. But you are offering a different assessment, and now I'm intrigued. I don't know if I should read Mason's Inside Out or Blake's Comfortably Numb.

  3. I listened to The Division Bell a few times over the weekend. I really love this album. I'm not sure if it gets much respect among diehard Floyd fans, but in my opinion it's shoulders above A Momentary Lapse of Reason. I'm also probably a little biased because I saw them on the Division Bell tour. But it's really a solid album.

Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band This is a great list. Lots of overlap with my own. I haven't counted, but we have to have at least 30 albums in common on our respective lists. Good stuff! Edit: And I especially like the inclusion of Saint Dominic's Preview. The title track is my favorite Van song, and one of my ten, if not five, favorite songs of all time...
  5. I tried, but couldn't do it.
  6. I think I have it somewhere between 8-10. And at this point in their career that is highly impressive! Edit: Sorry for the double post...
  7. I think I have it somewhere between 8-10. And at this point in their career that is highly impressive!
  8. I went with LVS. Vital Signs and Natural Science closely competed. Love The Garden, but the power of LVS cannot be denied after all these years.
  9. The question about Losing It was sort of random. Maybe the interviewer, like many of us, wants to hear it on the upcoming tour and was hoping that Geddy would drop a clue...
  10. I don't have a five-disc player of any sort, but this week's listening has been dominated by: Camel - Moonmadness Yes - Yessongs Supertramp - Crime of the Century Pink Floyd - all Chris Robinson Brotherhood - Big Moon Ritual + live cuts from current tour
  11. QUOTE (Imaginos @ Jul 11 2012, 11:24 AM) This weeks main albums have been... Rush - "Clockwork Angels" Ginger Wildheart - "100%" Panic Room - "Skin" Marillion - "Live - New York 12th & 13th June 2012" Chris Robinson Brotherhood - "Big Moon Ritual" Just caught CRB last night in Kansas City. Also caught the Pittsfield, MA show on this tour. LOVE the new album, and they kill live...
  12. I'm currently in the process of becoming hooked on Moonmadness...
  13. QUOTE (the masked drummer @ Jul 11 2012, 03:35 PM) QUOTE (Powderfinger @ Jul 11 2012, 02:23 PM) I love the part about not trusting Ray Danniels for management. Because, you know, Rush isn't a class act and a model for career longetivity or anything... I mean, isn't it easy to imagine Geddy knocking over Neil's drumkit and calling Alex a "pu$$y" and "motherf&%$er" while spitting in his face twenty minutes before the live curtain goes up? In his Rolling Stone interview Tate acted so confused over why the band was pushing him out. What a joke. Even if the Rockenfield and Wilton accounts are biased and exaggerated in any respect Tate was clearly way out of line. I haven't cared about this band since Empire, but I was intrigued by this story. When I was 14 I caught them on the Empire tour and got to go backstage to meet the band, sans Tate, who wasn't there. I do have to say that while Michael Wilton's declaration and Scott's were very moving and sound very clear and it sounds like they did everything possible to keep Geoff, but the bit about Ray Danniels I can understand. Ray screwed Van Halen so bad I could see not trusting him. Not saying anything negative about Ray's devotion to Rush and all his hard work he's done for them but Ray set Van Halen up for a Tour of no profits when they should have netted millions of dollars. It's a cut throat business, so cut throat even the van halen brothers fell for Ray's management style which, in hindsight, seems like a bonehead move. With that said, I'm bummed Tate will have likely a more lucrative career than QR, but at least they will be able to make a living doing what they love, and maybe even climb the charts again. Who knows... On one final note, these true hollywood stories give me a sense of contentment that maybe in the grand scheme of things I was better off and am still better off having a day job and playing the drums for fun and extra spending cash. To exist in a band like QR for years on end, i think i would have gone completely nuts having to work in a band that was once a titanic, now just a life raft barely floating. That would suck really, really bad to watch all you worked for that once flourished go down the tubes in the name of one selfish and greedy band member. There's no "I" in Team, kids. I didn't know that about Ray Danniels. My only real awareness of him stems from his management of Rush. Thank you for your insight.

  15. ZZ Top Stevie Ray Vaughan RHCP Those are the first three that come to mind.
  16. The Wreckers Clockwork Angels The Garden Caravan Headlong Flight BU2B The Anarchist Carnies BU2B2 Seven Cities of Gold Halo Effect Wish Them Well 1-5 are slightly interchangeable depending on the day. Seven Cities of Gold has potential to climb--I just need to spend more time with it. I must admit I wasn't entirely blown away by Caravan and BU2B upon first introduction, and I thought Headlong Flight was good, but not necessarily classic. Something about hearing them in the context of the record has changed that opinion, especially where Caravan and Headlong Flight are concerned. I've really fallen in love with those two tracks. Caravan, in particular, is often playing in my head. That's significant, because there was a time when I would have trouble recalling how it went. I guess for me it just didn't work as a single. But it really came to life in album format!
  17. QUOTE (rushgoober @ Jul 3 2012, 01:11 PM) QUOTE (Powderfinger @ Jul 3 2012, 09:49 AM) QUOTE (rushgoober @ Jul 3 2012, 10:41 AM) QUOTE (Powderfinger @ Jul 3 2012, 08:37 AM) The Wreckers might be my favorite tune on CA. But it is held back by the maddening decision to fade it out just when it sounded like a soaring Lifeson solo was ready to take flight. I'm hoping they'll stretch it out live. I listened to the album a few times before I heard anyone complain about this. One time when I listened again I paid attention to the fact that the song faded out since people seemed to be bothered by it. Just like the first few times I heard the song, it seems like a big nothing that the song fades out - makes no difference to me. The song is great. Fading it out doesn't register to me positively or negatively at all, in fact, usually I don't even notice that it fades out. No offense to you or anyone, but it seems like a silly thing to get caught up on. It's not "silly" to me. This is the first time I've said anything about the album at all. It was a considered point, at least I thought. As mentioned, The Wreckers is my favorite track on the album, and I invoked The Spirit of Radio and Limelight in my praise for it. I noticed the fade out on my first spin. I knew about 20 seconds into The Wreckers that it was my favorite track and I was totally digging it. Then I noticed with 16 seconds left Lifeson launches a stellar sounding solo with wonderful tone and they kill it. I think even just five or ten more seconds of it would have been much more satisfying. All I'm really saying is that I like it so much I want more of it... Again, it's my favorite track on an album that is probably my favorite since Signals. It's okay to have a few criticisms, no? If anything isn't that an indication that I'm listening carefully? It's all good, and I did totally appreciate and understand that you were coming from a place of loving the song. It was just a non-issue for me. It's cool if it is for you. Indeed, it's all good. I was just caught off guard and got a little defensive. I've always looked up to you as a model of an intelligent and respectful forum member who thinks about and listens critically to Rush's music. That's all I was trying to achieve with my own contribution. That was the first time I've said anything about the new album. And as the first friend I made on this forum I was confused by your decision to isolate just one aspect of my admittedly hasty post. I absolutely love the album, but it was slow going at first. Like you, I listen critically and expect nothing but the best from Rush. Yes?

  19. The Wreckers might be my favorite tune on CA. But it is held back by the maddening decision to fade it out just when it sounded like a soaring Lifeson solo was ready to take flight. I'm hoping they'll stretch it out live. It might be my favorite simply because more than any other tune on the album it approaches a classic verse-melody and chorus hook akin to Spirit of Radio, Limelight, etc. I thought Halo Effect was a skipper, but I enjoyed it during my most recent listen. Wish Them Well is definitely a skipper for me and the only song on the album I really can't stand. So far Seven Cities of Gold isn't doing much for me, but I'm not skipping it, because I think it has value that I have simply yet to recognize. And finally, I don't mind BU2B2 at all. It's short and different. This is the first time I've weighed in on the new album, and I regret that I'm not being more articulate. But I've been traveling and busy. It was definitely a grower for me, but it's really beginning to sink in and I think it's at least their best album since Hold Your Fire, and maybe their best since Signals, which is my favorite Rush album--so that's saying quite a bit. On the first two or three spins I was entirely underwhelmed. And as mentioned I do think there's some filler. But every album since Signals has contained filler IMHO. The more I kept that in mind the more I opened up to CA's value. (I went in hoping to hear a masterpiece, which wasn't fair, or the right approach.) The "filler" on CA is superior to some of the best tracks on albums like Presto, Roll the Bones, and even Counterparts as far as I'm concerned. But yes, I LOVE The Wreckers and do NOT love Wish Them Well.
  20. Yep. One of my ten favorite guitarists of all time. Big fan of Voyage of the Acolyte. Massive fan of his work with Genesis. Return of the Giant Hogweed, Fly on the Windshield... It's rarely mentioned, but he kills on the Genesis Live version of The Knife. Looking forward to getting Squackett!

  24. QUOTE (micgtr71 @ May 29 2012, 07:31 PM) This is one piece of vinyl that I actually wore down and replaced. I listened to this album constantly when I was in high school. One of my favorite records ever. Squire's bass playing and compositional skills were amazing. This album never sounds dated. I'm going to spin it later tonight. You made a great point here. It doesn't sound dated at all. I was impressed by how fresh it sounds.
