  1. Wait, Paul Rudd plays for AC/DC? http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a2/Paul_Rudd_LF.JPG/220px-Paul_Rudd_LF.JPG Whoops, sorry.
  2. QUOTE (rushgoober @ Sep 5 2012, 09:03 PM) QUOTE (micgtr71 @ Sep 5 2012, 06:29 PM) I like Islands. It's not a bad record. Unfortunately for the album, there are so many fantastic albums by this band. Currently, I can not get enough of Lizard. Lizard Does a more complex and sophisticated prog album exist? Just listened to Lizard for the first time in quite a while. What a weird but cool album. It sounds to me a bit like aliens from Neptune trying to combine early Genesis with Gil Evans/Miles Davis. It's very interesting and trippy, but I don't think I'll be coming back to it very often. Up next is Islands, Beat, and Three of a Perfect Pair. After this, The Great Deceiver Vols 1 & 2. Really looking forward to these, as I think the Wetton/Bruford era is by far KC's best.
  3. Ugh, hard to narrow it down to ten but I would say: Making Memories The Necromancer Fountain of Lamneth Lessons Cinderella Man Countdown Superconductor Everyday Glory Out of the Cradle Seven Cities of Gold
  4. QUOTE (softfilter @ Sep 6 2012, 01:44 AM) They all look like happy campers to me... What sincere smiles!! http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b216/spirit3trails/264f.jpg Yeah, especially Alex. Joan Jett looks hobbit sized next to Neil. I guess she's, what about 5'5"?
  5. QUOTE (canadianice @ Sep 5 2012, 11:07 AM)QUOTE (trenken @ Sep 5 2012, 10:28 AM) QUOTE (GeddysMullet @ Sep 4 2012, 08:56 PM) What exactly IS a "classic"? Songs that tons of people love that get all kinds of crazy radio play over years, and get a lot of attention from those outside of hardcore Rush fans that love everything they do. Closer to the Heart, TSOR, Freewill, Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Subdivisions. Most people dont even know this band put any albums out after Signals. That's just a fact. Classics are songs my girlfriend knows who in general despises Rush, but she sure knows those songs I listed because they're played on XM radio, and she hears them elsewhere. Classic as a term is always tied to hits. That word gets thrown around here like it almost doesnt even mean anything, used for at all kinds of stuff that most people have never heard before. Maybe its a classic to them personally which of course is fine, but as a general term and how its normally used, Rush hasnt put a legit classic song out in a very long time. Ill bet anything if they were asked about this themselves they would list the same songs I did, Tom Sawyer being first of course, and probably nothing after the mid-80s at the latest. What a ridiculous post. Do we really need to know that your gf despises Rush. You obvoiusly are the one who doesn't know what Classic means, now run along and be miserable, Tiny Tim. He has a girlfriend? They probably got together because they both despise Rush (for him, everything after Power Windows it seems).
  6. Congrats to Rush! And in before the CA haters. Great to see Rick Wakeman win Prog God (!) but it would have been great to see that go to Jon Anderson.
  7. QUOTE (ShlappinDahBass @ Sep 5 2012, 01:15 PM) They actually got a real string quartet and grand piano during the recording. I don't think there's any synth-related sounds in this song. Right, but I'm talking about the last minute or so of the song. There's definitely something "synthy" in there. It has that "sweep" sound that you get from analog synths, like on Xanadu or Camera Eye. I think it's either synth layered in with the real string section, or maybe even the real strings run though a flange effect or LFO sweep filter.
  8. Interesting list. How does Dave Grohl wind up at $225M while Taylor Hawkins is at $20M. And how can Mick Fleetwood be down at #30? I guess it shows the importance of songwriting credits.
  9. QUOTE (WCFIELDS @ Aug 26 2012, 06:45 PM) QUOTE (LeaveMyThingAlone @ Aug 26 2012, 02:02 PM) Lifeson is the only one I'd approach and even that would be a judgment call, just based on what I have heard about each of the guys. Neil obviously a no-no...Geddy I have heard is a toughie too. Lifeson seems to be the one more cordial and down to Earth. The one time I did meet Geddy at his record signing he didn't seem to be enjoying himself at all. No smile, little eye contact, and the pictire I got with him is funny because I have a huge grin and he looks so annoyed....and this was at a public appearance where people are buying his album and he's SUPPOSED to be nice, so I can imagine how it would go when he's just trying to enjoy a baseball game outside of his Rush world... We all have bad days. We all have days where if someone says the wrong thing, we might snap. Everyone judging Geddy based on some heresy story by a radio guy might be getting all bent for nothing. The 2 times I have approached celebrities about a picture were average experiences. They both seemed annoyed but didn't come out and say anything asshole-like. They took their picture and were done with it I would never approach any of them anywhere. I wouldn't even want to meet them under any circumstances... I'm sure the feeling is mutual.
  10. ^Wow, finally something nice to say about Rush. I'm shocked.
  11. QUOTE (skullchrist @ Sep 5 2012, 02:02 PM) I know bands make their money off merch these days but I think it's a little extreme. If it was you personally getting ripped off, you might feel differently.
  12. QUOTE (ShlappinDahBass @ Sep 5 2012, 08:59 AM) I just can not (emotionally) get over this song. It has got to be one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. These guys truly created a masterpiece that I hope they play live...NEXT SATURDAY Is anyone else still in "The Garden Trance"? Great song, and it still gets me every time. From the bridge through to the end is truly one of Rush's best recorded moments. Everything just comes together perfectly: the lyrics, Ged's vocals, guitar solo, etc. I still cannot get over the strings and synth towards the end of the song. It may even be the real strings run through some synth type effect. Whataver it is, it's perfect.
  13. QUOTE (mmm_donuts @ Sep 4 2012, 08:31 PM) Ya know back before this internet thing-a-ma-jig we had to figure out songs all by ourself. Yep, fire up the record on the turntable and play the same 15-20 seconds over and over until I learned it. Drove the roommates nuts. But I guess internet tabs save time since I don't have 2-3 hours to spend figuring out songs. It does take some of the challenge out of it though. My dad had a reel-to-reel stereo tape deck which you could run at two speeds. So I would record songs from LPs onto this deck, and then slow down the tape to learn solos and riffs. My best learning experience EVER was learning 21st Century Schizoid Man on this tape deck. It was a great ear-training exercise, with all those crazy chromatic runs after the guitar solo.

Wow, you really don't like these albums and you've spent an awful lot of time thinking about it. The best that I can do is wish you well.
  16. QUOTE (GotRush @ Aug 30 2012, 06:11 PM)So is this "Breaking the Law" ? Your altertation of the frame, rather than the plate, could be construed as an attempt to hide the true identity of your vehicle. You're also setting yourself up for a "gotcha" moment with the police. They pull you over, say that you've altered your plate, and you smugly point out that it's actually the FRAME and not the plate. This is not going to go over well with a cop or judge. Why can't you just put a small "?" sticker on the bumper a couple of inches to the right of the frame? They might let that slide. But your alteration of the frame enchroaches on the visibility of the license plate, which I'm sure is illegal.
  17. I also have to agree with the post above about the best of CA being really good. For me, the best 8 tracks rank right up there with Rush's best work (especially if remixed and remastered ): Caravan Clockwork Angels The Anarchist Halo Effect Seven Cities Of Gold The Wreckers Headlong Flight The Garden ^ That's a hell of an album!
  18. Anyway, I do think it's possible that CA has the best 9-song run. The contenders for me would be: Show Don't Tell - Red Tide Dreamline - Neurotica Animate - LTTA TFE - Resist OLV - Earthshine Far Cry - Faithless Caravan - Headlong Flight So, yeah, for consistency I would probably pick CA or maybe VT or CP. Definitely not RTB or TFE.

QUOTE (apetersvt @ Aug 29 2012, 01:37 PM) QUOTE (They Bow Defeated @ Aug 29 2012, 01:19 PM) QUOTE (drbirdsong @ Aug 29 2012, 12:32 PM) Discussions of socialist shithead presidents probably belong in SOCN. Is this how far we've fallen? Show some f*cking respect. Agreed. I am not fond of FDR either, but this is not the appropriate place for this. Okay, I just hope you guys will be declining your Social Security checks in your golden years.

  21. QUOTE (drbirdsong @ Aug 29 2012, 12:54 AM) QUOTE (DBJetsman @ Aug 28 2012, 11:20 PM) Saying CA has a better run than 2112 is like saying George W Bush was a better president than Franklin D Roosevelt. C'mon man. I can name about 40 presidents better than FDR, but what does this have to do with Rush? Yeah, the president who led the country out of the Great Depression and to a victory in World War II, what a slacker.
