QUOTE (brunosamppa @ Apr 22 2012, 01:06 PM) Compressed music is shit. DR Scale: Bad 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Transition 8 9 10 11 12 13 Good 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 -------------- The problem is not volume, the problem is COMPRESSION. Lacks dynamic range. The money is your and ears too. If you like this... go enjoy 1) you must not listen to music at all then, because every passage of music has compression on it in some form. Compression is a tool, use it well and you get a good mix, use it bad and you get a bad mix. to say that "compressed music is shit" is ridiculous. 2) that scale is laughable. "Bad", "Good" -it's completely subject-able. 3) Are you basing your view on these sectors on research that you've done with your own ears, or just through waveforms and online numbers? Im not trying to change your view, clearly you don't like how they sound, And im not arguing that they aren't louder or they don't use compression. Even if they are louder, there is can still be dynamic range and i think they did a good job remastering the box set for a "new era". My background is that i am an audio engineering student, so i am constantly learning about mixing music properly and i make it a case to avoid over compression for my mixes. My range of hearing is approximately between 30Hz and 18kHz, I have a wide range of musical tastes and i listen to all music objectively. That being said, i am still learning and i enjoy discussions like this because sometimes i pick up on something i missed before. But i firmly believe that if you're gonna review a remastered set and say it's bad because it is louder, you had better have listened to it. if you can tell there's compression by using your ears, then you have a case. but if you just go by some online database and someone else's words, then i think you should re-evaluate your opinion. but i don't know if you've listened to them, have you? i mean no disrespect; i'd like to take you on your own words rather than a colourful number chart someone else made.

I'd like to see the scale on which those waveforms are based, otherwise they mean nothing. If they are comparable, then obviously they are louder. like i said, all music mastered today is made to be loud so that "common folk" like it. But that doesn't mean its "brickwalled". to clarify, this i what i mean by "brickwalled"; "I call something brickwalled when there are no dynamics left in the music. Everything is so limited and compressed that all passages of the music are the same volume. Songs mastered this way are perceived to be LOUD LOUD LOUD! Also, when viewing a waveform in an audio editor, the waveform of something that is brickwalled doesn't have peaks and valleys, and instead look like a two by four." key words: NO DYNAMICS, ALL PASSAGES are the same volume. Again, while your example clearly shows the sectors to be louder, there are still dynamics in the music. This is brickwalled: Top: Earthshine (Vapor Trails) Bottom: Earthshine (Retrospective 3) http://i452.photobucket.com/albums/qq250/the27man/Earthshinecompare.png Clearly you can see that at the same passage, one waveform is maxed out at -0.1 dB, while the other is significantly lower, probably around -3dB. BUT THE WAVEFORMS LOOK SIMILAR!!!! Hold on cowboy, since when did music mean looking at a waveform? I thought you listened to music with your ears? Here is Working Man, top: "Gold", bottom "Sector 1-Rush" http://i452.photobucket.com/albums/qq250/the27man/WorkingManCompare-1.png Clearly the bottom is louder, but neither is brickwalled. To me, the Sectors version of "Rush" sounds clearer and crisper, but thats just my opinion. I don't own any of the Rush 97 remastered albums, so i can't completely say that the Sectors discs are the best, but they are much better than the "Gold" compilation disc i have (especially the songs from Rush to A Farewell to Kings). If any of you like the 97 remasters or original CDs compared to the sectors versions, it doesn't make any difference to me. I just wanted to say that while LOUDER, the sectors disc are definitely NOT "brickwalled".

Brickwalled? definitely not. Louder? duh. every CD thats mastered nowadays is louder just to be competitive. It's inevitable. that doesn't mean that they're "brickwalled". Vapor Trails is brickwalled, Death Magnetic is brickwalled. listen to the sectors versions of La Villa Strangiato or a Farewell to Kings and tell me thats "brickwalled". they're louder, clearer and warmer (in my opinion) than recent CD mixes, but NOT "brickwalled".
  5. I also pre-order Clockwork Angels on vinyl, as well as that fan pack. im planning on having a vinyl listening party at school when the album is released. Also, in honor of Record Store Day 2012, i bought my 2nd copy of Moving pictures on vinyl and my 5th copy overall (CD, remastered CD/5.1 DVD, Sector2 CD, Anthem records pressing and Mercury pressing). it's safe to say that i have an addiction.
  6. QUOTE (vital signz @ Apr 20 2012, 04:30 AM) Did you ever sneak a peek at Christmas presents when you were young??? All the time! i loved hunting for gifts and i found about half of them every year. however, it didn't make Christmas any better that i knew what i was getting. with this album, i know im gonna love it because i've already heard Caravan and BU2B and if i listen to headlong flight, thats 1/4 of the album. I've done both where i listen to as much as i can as soon as i can and i've waited, and generally the times i wait turn out to be the albums i've like more. but like i said, im gonna love it regardless if i listen to a stream or leak or nothing until release date. Glad to see im not entirely alone on my quest. Cheers, fellow Resist-ers !
  7. I know, i'm crazy I'm probably the only one who hasn't listened to Headlong Flight. Is there anyone else who is waiting for the full album? EDIT: oops, wrong section (?) my bad..
  8. whats the harm if they do a couple special shows and a DVD? i don't understand why people are getting so bent out of shape over this RUMOR? People are acting like they have no choice to go a see Rush with an orchestra, or that this is the only way Rush will ever tour again. I think songs like Faithless and Manhattan Project would sound amazing will real strings instead of MIDI triggers!
  9. next time i need to take a 16.5 hour road trip, i'll listen to the entire studio album discography.
  10. QUOTE (danielmclark @ Apr 14 2012, 03:02 PM) Maybe I'm just not remembering, but I was listening to Far Cry earlier and it occurred to me, I don't know (or don't remember) if anyone from the band ever said why they included the Hemispheres chord. Any official word that you know of? in the making of S&A, Alex describes the suspended F# chord being a "bridge" between the key of the intro and the key of the rest of the song.
  11. I bought the UK pre-order cause im a junkie for "in depth" studio interviews but i don't care if it comes late, there'll probably be a 5.1 package that i can pick up as well... at least i hope!!! I want the first time i hear this album to be the best possible way to hear it, and as soon as possible. i listened to the 30 second clip, but im gonna try really really hard and avoid listening to all of Headlong Flight. its gonna be damn near impossible.
  12. QUOTE (grand phil-nale @ Apr 12 2012, 03:29 PM) You can easily convert FLAC to Wav and then burn to a CD. I use xACT to do this on my Mac. http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/14246/xact whenever you burn to a cd you're converting to 44.1kHz 16-bit. Burning a 96kHz, 24-bit file to a CD is very very pointless.
  13. well, now you can!!! http://www.rush.com/rush/images/background.jpg
  14. they'd never do it as a full tour, a few special shows at close venues would be ideal. im open to the idea, though i'd never travel to go see it... i'd just buy the DVD or CD. i think it could sound wonderful to have a full orchestra. they could do more songs that they haven't done before and just pepper in the live standards and fan favourites, maybe with slightly different arrangements.
  15. In The Mood/Fly By Night (Medley) Twilight Zone Jacob's Ladder Losing It Kid Gloves Grand Designs Prime Mover Cut To The Chase Totem Bravest Face i dunno, seems realistic to me! I like Totem, but i know not everyone is crazy about it. replace that with one with anything else if you want.
  16. QUOTE Sitcom style funny intro about living in the suburbs (with the boys acting) Subdivisions The Analog Kid Chemistry Cold Fire Armor and Sword CA song (unrelated to suite) CA song (unrelated to suite) Middletown Dreams Freewill Vital Signs Intermission Clockwork Angels steampunk intro vid Caravan BU2B CA Suite CA Suite CA Suite CA Suite MalNar Drum Solo Broons Bane/The Trees The Enemy Within The Weapon Witch Hunt The Spirit Of Radio Encore Limelight Jacobs Ladder Tom Sawyer i rather like that set list! maybe switch Cold Fire with Cut to the Chase, and add in Prime Mover, or The Big Money. maybe some slight re-arranging, and that'd be a solid set list.
  17. QUOTE QUOTE (Dylan2712 @ Apr 7 2012, 11:51 AM) and to whomever posted about people being "audio snobs", i can assure you that trained ears can hear compression, EQ, reverb etc... Yes, and those people tend to be audio snobs because they are the only people who actually care about such minor details in music. The vast, vast majority of listeners aren't doing it on high-end equipment, they aren't trained (your word, not mine) to hear the things you're talking about - compression, EQ, reverb (although reverb is way more obvious, usually, than other fine details). In defense of using the word snob, many audiophiles I know embrace the word and wear it with pride (much like I call myself a geek, proudly). And there's nothing wrong with that. And if there is an aspect of insult to it, it's only because of the people who trash VT and those of us that like it, 90% of them are bashing us because we can't hear the imperfections that they do. "You've got to be some sort of idiot to like VT, the clipping gives me a headache and makes me want to stab a baby" is a pretty common sentiment. "Snob" is me being gentle when describing that type of person. strange enough, i agree with you. as with anything, there are people who know what they're taking about and then there's people that talk out of their ass. even though im only an audio engineering student, part of our course was to do these exercises which trains us to hear things like compression, EQ, reverb, 1ms-50ms Delay; all of these and more in either one or both channels. even with my limited "ear training" (legit, what the school calls it), i can hear the over-compressed sound on Vapor Trails as well as other music. with Vapor Trails or Metallica's "Death Magnetic", its much more obvious than say on "The Camera Eye". my guess is people who heard VT and could hear something "wrong" with the mix didn't fully understand it until they were able to put a name to it. but, using the term "snob" to describe people who respond to the sound of VT as you have quoted, is a fair assessment. but keep in mind, there are people who can hear these things and know what it is. some of us aren't assholes.
  18. One Little Victory in one of my top favourite Rush tunes, however, i only listen to the remixed version. i also love Secret Touch; the heavy compression/limiting works for that song-it's very much "in-your-face". i never got into the rest of the album, it just needs more rotation for me. If they come out with a remastered version, i'd definitely get it. and to whomever posted about people being "audio snobs", i can assure you that trained ears can hear compression, EQ, reverb etc... its odd that the audio engineers who recorded/mixed/mastered (wherever it went wrong) this album, didn't think this was a problem. but then again, as someone mentioned earlier, super loud CD's were the norm in the early 2000's.
  19. in regards to the clock; now all you have to do is modify one of those clock do-hickies that makes it chime a different tune every hour.
  20. VAPOR TRAILS 10TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR!!!
  21. the Signals dog could mean "something", or it could mean absolutely nothing. i mean, how often has that damn dog been somewhere? Gold, Retrospective 3, the inner sleeve of Hold Your Fire, The Spirit of Radio Greatest hits compilation...thats all i can name off the top of my head, though im sure theres more. so, the dog and hydrant on this tour book could either mean they're gonna play all of Signals, or its JUST TO MESS WITH US!!!
  22. 11. The Necromancer 10. The Fountain of Lamneth 9. By-tor and the Snow Dog 8. Hemispheres 7. Cygnus X-1 6. 2112 1-5. Xanadu/ La Villa Strangiato/ Jacob's Ladder/ Natural Science/ The Camera Eye i honestly can't decide rankings for the top 5. Xanadu is pure badassery, La Villa is instrumental badassery, Jacobs Ladder is thematic, Natural Science is when i feel they perfected the multi-parted song formula as it feels whole and complete and it doesn't feel disjointed, and The Camera Eye is also thematic and i love playing it on guitar. 2112 would also be tied, but it doesn't consistently flow as well as the others.
  23. i didn't know any of the setlist for the time machine tour, except that they open the first set with Spirit of Radio and the second set with Tom Sawyer and Moving Pictures. after TSoR, i was completely ecstatic when they played Time Stand Still. but from Presto through Faithless i was like "okay, i don't really know/like these songs too much". i only really started listening to these songs after the show and the DVD. Freewill and Subdivisions were well placed, as was Marathon (holy shit, that explosion!!! haha!). i was only truly surprised in the second set when they played 2112+Temples, and then La Villa Strangiato and Working Man for the encore were perfect surprises as well. this is something i'd do again (not spoiling the set at all), but now i think im more "equipped" so-to-speak, and i can identify more songs faster. Can't wait for this tour to get underway!!!!
