  1. You can't compare the two fairly. I have to go with Brian just because he took the book of pop music and made it new. Hey maaaaaan, when it hits...you know.
  2. Wilson, for two reasons. 1. His body of work is not just limited to Porcupine Tree, but also an incredible discography as a solo artist and collaborator. His album remixes/remasters are absolute gold as well. 2. Townsend is an autistic man child. Which isn't bad, but certainly gives off a weird vibe.
  3. Has his voice really gone downhill though? For someone who's had throat surgery, he still sounds up to par for other entertainers his age.
  4. They need rest. Indeed. I'm glad they're finally hanging it up to spend time for themselves. After how long guys like Elton and Neil have entertained and performed, they deserve the time to devote to themselves. Sad, but it had to happen.
  5. I think it's in bad taste, but never underestimate the power of thousands of fools with money. People will pay top dollar for this, and that's a shame. I regret not having had the ability to see Zappa, Dio, and Michael Jackson, but there's plenty of live footage and audio that I can listen to/watch and enjoy for the rest of my life. Why would I shell out my hard earned money to see what amounts to video projection on an invisible screen? Yeah, I guess it's sort of neat to see this become more readily available and mainstream, but...it just feels too plastic, too cheap, and a money grab. If your thing is to go see a projection of a dead musician mime to the living musicians behind them, be my guest. Your money, not mine. But don't lambast me for not being giddy about a hologram.
  6. Out of the Big Four bands to announce retirement, the one I least expected to go first was Slayer. They are just godly performers, though I've never enjoyed their particular variety of thrash. I much prefer Anthrax, Megadeth, and 80s Metallica. Gotta give these guys their props though, they spearheaded a lot in the metal world. More dates will be announced, I'm sure. I wouldn't be surprised if they take the show to Europe and maybe another string of North American dates before calling it quits.
  7. http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-42806129 Well, I knew it would come. Had a feeling that Elton has been meaning to slow down for a while now. Tour dates are on the official website but it's responding slowly. Thoughts? Are you going to see any of the shows? I'll be hitting up Cleveland, Columbus and might go to Cincinnati.
  8. How is this the doctor's fault entirely? A level of personal responsibility must be laid on Tom. People need to research medications instead of just trusting their doctors. It's what happened to my father. He trusted an absolute quack for a doctor to treat his back pain with a shit ton of opiates and he's almost six months sober. The stuff really messes with your mind. It chews you up, spits you out, then throws you in a deep fryer for good measure. My dad now has short term memory issues that he never had, big mood swings, migraines that leave him in bed for two or three days, and his hands occasionally shake. He never would have gotten into the situation if he had done what was first suggested and undergo another back surgery to correct the problem, but he decided it was easier to numb the pain than eliminate it. It's not always the doctor's fault, sometimes the patient is at fault for not doing their homework and putting blind faith into someone who may only be taking guesses. So because three famous people die because of opiate abuse/misuse, NOW enough is enough? This has been a problem in the US for years now, especially in the Midwest. Yeah, it's sad that Prince and Tom Petty came to such unfortunate ends, but what about all the people you never hear about? The people who get heroin interlaced with fentanyl and overdose? What about the epidemic of carfentanil, an elephant tranquilizer, being freely available in the streets and being laced with other drugs to maximize their potency? This is more than a few musicians dying, this is a national crisis.
  9. He's always come off to me as the elitist type of progressive music fan. Never could get my head around WHY he's like that, he just is. Perhaps he just feels Rush had better output of longer songs than shorter songs, which isn't entirely wrong, but it certainly is very close minded.
  10. Not really a tune I bang out all the time, but it's a nice sing-a-long in the car with the girlfriend.
  11. The Beatles CAN NEVER BE OVERRATED!!! They kind of are though. The Beatles were the first really really BIG music group. The phenomenon is still very much felt in the modern music world, and they only had a decade of professionally recorded material. The fact that albums like Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road are still being played and analyzed is a feat on its own. The problem with The Beatles is that it appeals to damn near everybody, and when you hear them one too many times, you get sick of it really quick. That's where the sense of being overrated comes from. It's not like they were the only British Invasion band that struck gold outside of their corner of the world, but many people wouldn't bother looking further into the other groups of that time that were just as big as The Beatles.
  12. Nina Simone is in the same vein as the likes of Miles Davis and many other jazz/blues musicians who have been inducted into the HoF. They're just as responsible for bringing about rock and roll as we've known it for the last 50 years as any of the big name rock groups.
  13. Honestly can't complain too much about the new inductees. Obviously I would have left Bon Jovi out for Judas Priest, but whatever. Glad to finally see Miss Simone get her due in the HoF, long time coming. As far as Radiohead, it's not the proper time. I think by the mid-2020s, Radiohead will have gotten in, but not now. They've still got a lot left in them before really being considered HoF material.
  14. Can anyone shed some light on the samples used in Voyage 34? I've looked for years to find information on where Steven got the material, but haven't found anything.
  15. Done in the first half of the year, but no estimated shipping date. That's fine, but how much longer do we plan to keep this going? The only way I will acknowledge a new Tool album is if it's in my hands and I'm listening to it. So until then, I can't be hyped.
  16. ...That's a joke, right? You really think someone would do that? Just go on the internet and tell lies?
  17. If you pronounce Neil's first name similar to the word "kneel", you're doing it wrong. It's actually pronounced as "nail".
  18. Record Store Day had their annual Black Friday event this weekend and I got up early Friday morning to get some goodies from my favorite record shop! Fleet Foxes - The Electric Lady Sessions 10" Grateful Dead - Grateful Dead Records Collection (includes Wake of the Flood, From the Mars Hotel, Blues For Allah, and the Steal Your Face live album) Wings - Venus and Mars (Red/Yellow colored vinyl, looks fantastic!) Miles Davis - Birth of the Cool (White colored vinyl, absolutely beautiful) Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (Blue colored vinyl, really cool!) Miles Davis - Bitches Brew (UK Import) Miles Davis Quintet - Cookin' Michael Jackson - Thriller
  19. Human Nature and P.Y.T never get played on the radio around here. I'd rather hear those than Beat It, Billie Jean, or any other of Mike's more popular songs. Michael was probably the hardest working person in pop music up until his death. There was never a performance of his that he didn't give 200% and then some. I especially like the Yokohama Stadium show from 1987 at the beginning of the Bad tour.
  20. I think you have to remember that when this interview took place, most of those bands had shifted AWAY from progressive music. Frank was also a major PITA during interviews like this one, you can tell he's taking the piss out of this poor interviewer.
  21. He was being a jackass. Seems they were making comments about the young lady on stage who was playing with Gene. Heckler didn't want to hear it and said "Shut up and play your guitar", among other things.
  22. Gene had him kicked out after he grabbed another 20 bucks from his wallet. That's called a convenience fee.
  23. I think the Dead were the only band who could do full justice to Bob's songs. Jerry doing Visions of Johanna is just stunning. I hear ya. They did a bunch of other folks cover well too as i know you know! Dear mr fantasy. I have been listening to more dead lately than in along while. Anyways i just watched long strange trip on amazon prime. Its free and it was great imo. Always gotta love those Drums>Space>All Along the Watchtower sequences. Or Miracle>Gimmie Some Loving. They just had a thing for all of that.
