The history of Rush wouldn't be complete without at least a mention of the bad press they got from music critics. One of the main plot lines of the story of Rush is how they become such a great success in spite of the vitriol. I noticed that the reviews seemed to steadily improve the longer the band was around. Eg. in the 70s it was almost all negative reviews, 80s were a mix, 90s were mostly good, and then after they came back from hiatus it seems they were all good. They were being praised left and right on the last few tours.

I would agree with most here, and say that Snakes is overall better than TM. Only advantage I would give TM is that the stage production was more elaborate / had more going on, which I like. But the vocals are not the greatest, and I do prefer the sound production of S&A as well.

Since 2002, when I was 14 years old.

This one has always been a personal favorite of mine, seemed a bit underrated on these forums though. I was very happy that they finally played it live on R40, and even happier that they did it at one of the shows I went to!

It almost sounds like a surprise release of an old show from the RTB tour! Which would also be pretty cool...

Kind of an odd title, no? http://bravewords.com/news/rush-roll-the-bones-live-cd-dvd-due-in-November

I'd say it was, because it had music from their entire career as well as their biggest stage production ever.

I'm 27, so I guess that's relatively young? I discovered the band in 2002, at about the same time Vapor Trails was released. They announced a tour date for Edmonton, and I decided that I wanted to go. Funny thing is though, I'd never really listened to their music at the time but I decided that I wanted to go see them. I'd been to 2 concerts already and enjoyed it, and I'd heard that Rush were a good band to see. So I got the tickets and set about getting familiar with their music. I first noticed how different they sounded to the bands I already liked - they weren't as heavy as Iron Maiden or Metallica. Still liked the music, and loved the variety of their catalog - they sounded so different through the various parts of their career. But it was seeing them live that turned me into a huge fan. They played everything the way it sounded on record - the guitar solos, drum fills, and all. It was tough music to play, but they made it look so easy. And of course, as an amateur drummer, I found Neil's performance amazing. The solo... and I thought it was so cool the way the whole kit shook as he played So the rest is history. I've been fortunate to see them in concert 8 times and recruit one new fan, haha

Music + lyrics and the way they both fit together in such a unique style. I voted 70% music and 30% lyrics, sums it up pretty well. Their LIVE performances have a lot to do with it as well. :ebert:

What were the best seats you have had for a RUSH show?
Mark_L replied to NaturalScientist75's topic in On The Lighted Stage
I was in the second row, in front of Geddy at the show in Edmonton last fall... awesome experience, even made it into the big crowd picture on the website :) -
How many Rush shows have you been to?
Mark_L replied to NaturalScientist75's topic in On The Lighted Stage
Five, soon to be six... Edmonton 2002 Edmonton 2008 Toronto 2010 Vancouver 2011 Edmonton 2012 Calgary 2013 -
Oops, wrong thread :(
-
Yep... I've also seen it read, "basstime, brainiac, horntime, have a snack"
-
Anybody notice this? For the first two shows, it looks like the lighted words at the bottom of Ged's horn/brain/popcorn setup read: Bassy, Brainy, Horny, Corny But since Pittsburgh, it now says: Basstime, Brainiac, Horntime, Have A Snack Just an observation from the pics, sorry if someone's mentioned this already.

Looks like my show will be getting the 'B' list.. I would have picked some combination of A and B, but of course you can't please everyone... as all of the setlist discussions on this board have shown

The Body Electric --> Middletown Dreams Bravado --> The Pass Carnies --> Seven Cities Of Gold Manhattan Project --> Dreamline The Spirit Of Radio --> 2112 That is accurate. Good to know.

Someone got it from the road crew, supposedly... said there were two setlists labelled Night A, which was Manchester's set, and Night B, which had those changes.

Very cool... that is pretty much right where I'll be sitting in Edmonton so it's a nice preview!

OK, so I'm just seeing if anyone else has any information regarding the pyro effects that Rush has incorporated into their live shows over the years. Here's what I know of: Time Machine -Marathon: "shot in the dark" bang -Witch Hunt: fire -Caravan: flames for "world lit only by fire", sparklers for "long train of flares" -2112: flames at the end of Overture -Far Cry: fireworks for "circuits blowing" Snakes & Arrows -Far Cry: fireworks -Witch Hunt: flames -2112: bang at the end of Overture -One Little Victory: fire with dragon sequence R30: Dragon with fire during One Little Victory. I believe this was the only pyro effect they used on this tour, same with Vapor Trails tour. Test For Echo - anything? I'm not sure Counterparts - fireworks at the end of Stick It Out, flames during Double Agent "cross of holy fire" Looks like they did the explosion during Red Sector A for the GUP and PoW tours, but dropped it for the HYF tour. Does anyone know of any other effects during the 80s and 90s tours? Just curious to know.

January 1988 - current album was Hold Your Fire... so I'm going with Time Stand Still, but that's a tough one - many great tracks to choose from on that album
