  1. QUOTE (Finding IT @ Nov 17 2010, 02:38 PM) I will offer up "The Second Coming" by Yeats because it's theme and imagery is likely to be similar to some of the religious work you might select from Milton. I think we should focus our discussion on poetics and why we think the respective work has strengths in these areas. The Second Coming Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity. Surely some revelation is at hand; Surely the Second Coming is at hand. The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert A shape with lion body and the head of a man, A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun, Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds. The darkness drops again; but now I know That twenty centuries of stony sleep Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle, And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born? Surprisingly the stuff I'm narrowing down to are not that religious (I cut out Lycidas, sorry. I figure everyone always chooses that one, but I just find it choppy). Milton is not my favorite poet, I should say. I should also say I consider Vergil the greatest poet and I hate him. And I hate that I him. It's so sad. (Donne is my favorite poet, but I don't consider him the greatest poet. I wish though) I also wish I thought Blake was the greatest poet. I swear I'm working on this! I'm having trouble narrowing down to one single thing. I'm down to three pieces.
  2. I actually thought The Village was beautifully shot with a gorgeous soundtrack (The Gravel Road, gorgeous!), however, the script at times was incredibly contrived and false-sounding and the twist was awful. *Hilary Hahn is the violinist, btw. She's a fab musician. Check out her stuff. BUT! I have this amazing ability to figure out twists and plots in films, books, etc. In fact, I figured out The Sixth Sense from the previews so I don't go to films for twists. So, I had already figured out how The Village ended and I was able to just enjoy the film for what it was. I thought it was really beautifully shot. There are these uniquely vivid moments (such as when Joaquin Phoenix's character grabs the girl's hand out of the dark and, in slow motion with the score, takes her into the house) that stand out in my mind as being photographic and rich in detail. I see how Shyamalan is talented and had potential and then he just and went blew it. Makes me sad. He should have done period pieces like The Remains of the Day.
  3. Geddy probably cuts his hair often so it grows faster. Goddamn those stupid theories hairstylists tell you... (I need to quit the sarcasm)
  4. HARRY POTTER. Let the laughter commence. (Oh yeah, and the UK Rush tour dates)
  5. I know this is for 2112, but whatever... I tried looking for Rush sightings and couldn't find a thread and I am tired. PhilosoRaptor decided to quote Sartre, er, I mean Rush on my iPod. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v450/Garbo/Photoon2010-11-18at00272-1.jpg Maybe he'll quote 2112 tomorrow.
  6. QUOTE (The Maples @ Nov 17 2010, 05:40 PM) QUOTE (garbo @ Nov 10 2010, 06:19 AM) QUOTE (RushHour @ Nov 7 2010, 12:15 PM) QUOTE Because Brit lit is secretly the best This is a false claim with no evidence to back it up. I also found that statement to be a bit racist and elitist. There are plenty of American and Canadian authors who are just as good (if not better) than most British authors, living or dead. Some examples that come to mind are Dan Brown, Scott Turow, Margaret Atwood, Mordecai Richler, Robert Jordan, and Brandon Sanderson. I would have commented because I actually thought this was hilarious, and as you can tell I like sarcasm, but you mentioned Margaret Atwood and I had to shut the trolley down. And Dan Brown? Like, why not Mark Twain or Maya Angelou? (My issue with Atwood stems from her book signings back in the 80's. That and my Neo-Nazi Feminist professor who made me read a bunch of her books and then kept mixing up Brave New World and1984 but said it didn't matter because Handmaid's Tale trumped them all and I was like, "Bitch, no." And then she told me straight women sucked and then I got angry) So, that's why I ignored your generally well-handcrafted satirical post, which was in response to my sardonic post. I have to say I was with you right up to the point where you said Dan Brown, and then I threw up a little in my mouth. And I can't believe that you omitted Herman Melville and Nathanial Hawthorne. My thoughts exactly (although I'm not the biggest Melville fan. I blame one of my professors on that. He fanboyed Melville out so much...).
  7. QUOTE (arushhead @ Nov 18 2010, 01:03 AM) and....what you say about 'three's company' is what you say about society....catch the witness, catch 'dewitt' catch the spirit, catch the spit. lol Oh my god, that is really amazing. What is even more amazing... I actually sang that in my head and it made perfect sense.
  8. QUOTE (GeddyRulz @ Nov 17 2010, 09:36 AM) I haven't said this yet, because I know everyone will disagree with me, but.... I think Kubrick is over-rated. And I think "The Shining" is one of the dullest "horror" movies I've ever seen. I actually think you have a very valid argument.
  9. QUOTE (Rushchick10 @ Nov 17 2010, 08:37 AM) Alright...it was a long night and I am off to dreamland, but not before I stock up on some great dream material. http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs431.ash1/23824_1427195727740_1468216679_31126710_6355087_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs391.snc3/23824_1424532501161_1468216679_31120536_2592653_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/hs328.ash1/28566_1501037373735_1468216679_31298260_5393687_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs318.snc3/28566_1501037453737_1468216679_31298262_3570086_n.jpg Then, of course, what is Geddy dream material without this shot... http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs576.ash2/149854_1706357546611_1468216679_31811856_1699087_n.jpg I know, I know. These are all repeats. I dare you to complain...just DARE you!! I'm not one to be all lusty, but dammit... I HAVE STREP. That eyebrow is magnificent. I cannot even... talk about it... all of him is like... a work... of genius... I don't even make sense.
  10. QUOTE (rushlady23 @ Nov 17 2010, 09:04 AM) I am alive and my house is in one piece. A tornado went through my neighborhood last night at 1:30 and uprooted several trees (including one in my yard), took down power lines, mangled sheds, and threw cars around in other neighborhoods. Houses and cars around me have damage but I was lucky enough to come out of it unscathed. That is so scary but I'm glad you're okay! *hugs* Now that you're okay, is your house okay or is it just the tree that was uprooted? My tonsils are now the size of Rhode Island as opposed to Arkansas. Praise be to the z-pack.
  11. QUOTE (RUSHHEAD666 @ Nov 17 2010, 01:59 AM) QUOTE (garbo @ Nov 16 2010, 03:37 PM) I laughed more at the audience than the film. And I'm a girl. It was just a rehash of Something's Gotta Give except that Jack's the shit and Diane plays neurotic better than Meryl (and I love Meryl as an actress). I will have to check that movie out. I'm sure my wife will love it. Did you like Streep in "Mamma Mia?" I didn't see it. Go rent, like, Out of Africa or Kramer v. Kramer. I love Streep's earlier stuff. Although I think she's still amazing, god, her earlier stuff is like effing mind blowing. Plus Out of Africa is just a beautiful film. *sniffs*
  12. QUOTE (Presto-digitation @ Nov 17 2010, 09:45 AM) Not even necessarily that they're poor (or perhaps they are indeed that)...but at the very least you just don't see the appeal. My vote is Wes Anderson. I know his humor is quirky and I'm all for that, but fecking God do his movies generally bore me. I did enjoy Rushmore, but not to the gushing praise that others have bestowed on it. I turned off Life Equatic. I think I just don't care... I totally agree with you. I enjoyed Rushmore and I actually love The Royal Tenenbaums, but after that... yuck. I think a lot of that is owed to the fact that Owen Wilson stopped co-writing the scripts. So, it just became bland, geometric filming. I cannot stand David Lynch. I grew up watching Ingmar Bergman, Peter Greenaway, Jeunet/Caro, and then Merhige, so when I finally saw Lynch I felt like he was a total hack. No offense to anyone who likes him, he's just not my style at all, and it's not that I don't get him, can I just say pretentious much? My friend says it's because I tend to see a far more disturbing film before I see one of his films (i.e. I saw The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover before I saw Blue Velvet; I saw Begotten before I saw Eraserhead). And as much as I love Tim Burton, he's my childhood, but he's not great. I just love him because he makes pretty movies (Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Big Fish). And that's basically it. But I still love his earlier movies.

QUOTE (ozzy85 @ Nov 14 2010, 02:52 PM) This has K-Tel written all over it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1yvS_m_7eE Oh god, Rick Moranis in the background.
  14. I laughed more at the audience than the film. And I'm a girl. It was just a rehash of Something's Gotta Give except that Jack's the shit and Diane plays neurotic better than Meryl (and I love Meryl as an actress).
  15. QUOTE (TullSkull @ Nov 16 2010, 05:58 AM) Woke up in South Dakota Go visit the DWW site for me. *sniffles*
  16. QUOTE (Janie @ Nov 16 2010, 09:12 AM) QUOTE (garbo @ Nov 15 2010, 09:24 PM) I just busted out a 100.3 (and rising) fever. Go me. You forgot to add, "Awwww yeah you healthy bitches!" Drink your apple juice and eat your chicken noodle soup. That's right, you healthy bitches! Actually we think I have strep so apple juice buuurrrnnnsss. I am sucking on popsicles because my tonsils are the size of Arkansas.

  18. I just busted out a 100.3 (and rising) fever. Go me.
  19. QUOTE (ridertoo98 @ Nov 15 2010, 01:41 PM) A migrain headache. I used to have such bad migraines I was on two prescribed oral medications plus a prescribed nasal spray (for migraines). Now I just have one prescribed medication, but I haven't had a migraine in about nine months. I feel for you; they are not fun. I am sick. Someone at one of the places I volunteer at came in with strep, and although I doubt I have strep, I have a sore throat, bad breath, and the like, but no fever. I am keeping my fingers crossed. I just hate being sick.
  20. QUOTE (1 of the 7 @ Nov 14 2010, 02:08 AM) Here are my girls, Aspen (front) and Hickory. They will celebrate their 9th and 10th birthdays over the next couple of months: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v739/betera/DSCF0526.jpg And IChoseFreeWill, I think mice and rats are cute. I feel horrible when my girls get a mouse. I try to love all animals, so I'm feeling terribly guilty that I killed a centipede earlier. Really should have tried to trap it and let it out. But then, I used to feel bad when the spider who I let live under the baseboards in my kitchen one summer would...um...have them for dinner. I guess whatever you do, somebody's gonna get it... I love the white spot! Super cute!! I don't have any pictures of Clara, the grey and white kitty, but this is Tiki, post surgery (she was spayed, poor thing). I caught her in a moment of sleepy shame. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v450/Garbo/71648_459931195736_517040736_6001602_2674859_n.jpg This is my baby (well, she's not mine, she belongs to my BFF, but I lie and say she's mine because she loves me), Luna, the half Andalusian/Arab pinto cross. She's adorable, super cute, sweet, you name it. And she's huge. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v450/Garbo/66374_458259945736_517040736_5973279_712442_n.jpg Luna as a wee baby (caught in the rain, aw sad) and her mommy. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v450/Garbo/luna.jpg I'll try to get pictures of the evil turkey. Damn turkey.
  21. QUOTE (CMWriter @ Nov 12 2010, 07:22 PM) My mom has epilepsy, and has since she was my age (17). At first there was a scare I might have been developing it, too, a couple weeks ago, but I had an EEG and the neurologist thinks I'll be fine. However, it's well-controlled and it's just become a part of life. When I was younger, though, she had at least a few a year. I think it's much scarier to witness a loved one having a seizure than to be the one having it, though, because you don't remember anything anyways. Thanks to modern medicine and many technological/medical advancements, at least people aren't blaming seizures on witchcraft anymore. Knowledge is key! There are 26 types of seizures, many of which you are fully conscious during. Considering the fact that epilepsy has now past mental illness as the number one cause of suicide, I would say "no" to that. Sorry. For many, you get used to living with a chronic illness, but for many others it's not that easy. For two of my seizures (I have four different kinds), I am fully aware and my auras are sometimes far freakier than my seizures. Epilepsy is not hereditary. Because it has virtually no funding, researchers and neurologists are still not sure what even causes it. However, I am pleased to hear your tests came back negative. I am also glad to hear your mother's is well controlled. Yes, knowledge is key, but epilepsy still remains one of the most stigmatized illnesses (as well most under-funded). I don't know. Part of me doesn't care, which sounds awful considering I live with it and it kills more than 30,000 Americans a year, but it's chronic and most people living with it learn to deal with it. Plus it's not a "cool" illness (anymore at least; although LTLE has been tied to high intelligence, like with Kierkegaard and the like. Plus Caesar and Alexander the Great had it and they tried taking over the world). I just wish it would go away, that's my opinion. I wish I didn't have it. Like, with guys. The moment a guy who is interested in me finds out I have it, they won't talk to me anymore. I have been single for over four years because of it and with my ex (my one boyfriend), one of the main reasons he broke up with me was because he was worried I couldn't have "his babies." At least if I had something terminal someone would pity me, or if I was autistic I would be "cool." Not that I want someone to pity me (trust me, I am super active), but it's just... grrr... it's frustrating! I've been dealing with this a lot lately because guys get really into me, lead me on and then find out and drop me. That sounds so awful, I know, but epilepsy is like "leprosy" and guys look at me like I'm tainted and gross. Not fun. And I'm getting annoyed and am starting to feel very insecure.
  22. QUOTE (Skyla2112 @ Nov 13 2010, 10:32 AM) Hey lovely Rushgals, I had a really terrible week (loss in the family) and when I finally got back home, I tuned into "Geddy Lee is hot!" to distract myself and try to feel better. I usually just settle for lurking around, but I wanted to say thanks to all of you for making such a nice (HOT!) archive. I thought my Rush picture collection was pretty solid, but I found a few gems to add here and there. Even though I've been a quiet forum visitor, I appreciate this one - and all you gals - alot! (Whenever I get THAT odd look when I praise our lovely singer, I cite you all as back-up for my views!) Sorry about your loss and glad the Ged thread could help (damn, I rhymed! )
  23. Hey, welcome!
