Why was the R30 DVD cut short?

Don't get your hopes up Tarkus, I want the rest of that footage as much as anybody but the odds of it happening are virtually nil. That D. Maher article is the only source for that "information" and as such it is worthless. I've tried to find a way to contact Lamoureux directly to ask him if he was even interviewed but haven't had any success.

Why not just call Fogo Labs and ask them about the article and the Grace DVD? You say you tried to find out if the article or the information is accurate, what avenues did you try?

Well, I'm not even sure where to begin but first let me say that I didn't intend my posts to be critical of you and there's also no way I can absolutely prove that the article is wrong. Having said that, it's hard to really sum up almost ten years of accumulated knowledge about Maher in a few paragraphs but virtually anybody who's paid attention to him knows he's really weird. He's occasionally right about stuff and wrong at least as often. He tries to convey the idea that he's close to the band and in a lot of ways he's like a more recent version of the B-Man. Kind of a super-fan that became bitter and angry.

On the old alt.rush site Maher seemed to be the topic of more threads than Rush was and they were almost always negative in the extreme. He was incredibly hostile and even did weird things like claim he had a son abducted and then people found out he didn't even have a son (at that time at least). There were whole threads discussing how weird he was like "Most Absurd/Peculiar/Funniest Maher Memory". He would create new aliases and use them to pump up his credibility. Here's an old post I found on that site to give you an idea of the overwhelming reaction to him (Narpet was one of his creations):

"Maher "knows so much about what is going on in the Rush camp,"

Narpet enthuses. Well, that's undoubtedly what Maher would like us to

think. But after participating in this NG for over a year, it's my own

firm conviction that Maher knows no more than the average avid Rush fan.

In fact, many of Maher's claims about Rush (e.g., his claim that

Rolling Stone magazine was going to give DS a rave review) have proved

flat-out wrong. I suspect that most long-term members of this NG are,

like me, far less taken with Maher than Narpet is.

Narpet says "it seems [Maher] never reveals his sources or anything

about how he knows so much..." True, he does not name his sources. But

I, for one, find nothing impressive in Maher's secretiveness -- if

anything, it's detrimental to his credibility. I suspect that Maher's

reluctance to divulge his "sources" is based on nothing more than the

fact that they're feeble sources -- and also upon a childish desire of

Maher's to appear mysterious yet omniscient."

In other words, he wants people to think he's important. He wrote a long manifesto once to claim he was leaving the site for good and explained that Rush was not good enough for him any more and yet he kept coming back to fight with people. It's clear that he has really hated Neil for a long time now and uses opportunities to personally insult him whenever he can like in his review of S&A last year where he wrote "The problem with Peart these days is he has become a whining snob."

His sporadic news bits are often horribly wrong and just sound like guesses. Here's what he wrote about R30 less than 2 months before it was released:

"R:30-Rush Live In Frankfurt," is to be released on November 15. The DVD set will feature a full performance of the German show during the band's 30th Anniversary Tour in 2004. It will also feature a full length documentary on the history of Rush that has a running time of just over one hour and exclusive lost live footage of the band from the early 1980s."

Let's see, three pieces of info. Full show - wrong. Documentary -wrong. Lost live footage of the early 80s - wrong. This is typical for him.

Doing general searches on him from different sites over the course of almost ten years here's a random selection of what you find:

- "DOUG MAHER?!?!?!? ASS-HAT! HE, and not the guy who came on Neil's bus, is the reason Neil doesn't interact with the fans."

- "It was Maher who put that rumor out there.

Yeah, what the hell ever happened to that guy? Kinda disappeared after all the bullshit that he let flow.

Oh well"

- "Judging from the laughably inept writing and the trite "Neil owes me" fanboi-ism, I'd guess this is the work of Doug Maher.

Same irrelevant asshole who "invented" stories about the band that once called Neils wife a "cash whore"

- "I'm surprised so many people are defending this review. It's one thing to give an opinion, but this guy is a known liar who was pretty much chased out of here after it was revealed that he fabricated an "interview with Alex Lifeson, as well as other article about the band that were entirely made up. He has zero credibility as a journalist and is completely obsessed with the band and Neil in particular - one of those wack-jobs who spends hours complaining about how awful the band is yet see's them in concert 12 to 15 times whenever they tour.

Again, the same pig who referred to Carrie Nuttall as a "cash whore"

This is from the administrator of the other major Rush fan site who had to respond to him publicly because he claimed the people who ran that website were somehow conspiring with people to hide who they really were, just weird:

- "I think it's really neat, that you are so concerned about this site, to go to the lengths you have, to discuss how 'Praetorian' is not actually Michael Moshbach. It's even more astounding, to me, how you need to talk about it with everyone else under the sun, except for the 'owners' of this place: namely Ken and myself.

Your concern is duly noted. But let me reassure you, Doug, that 'Praetorian' is not some random ghost walker that you have invented within your head."

- "Well golly. It's been at least 45 minutes since Mahar's name has been mentioned by a Rush fan. He needs to keep his "celebrity" out there somehow!"

- "Doug also sent me an interview he supposedly did with Alex during the R30 tour, exclusively for CP. The interview turned out to be a complete fake. Doug works as a freelance journalist, and made up the entire thing.

He accused Ouchie of stalking him (You're spot on Trace)."

- "So, it's basically your typical mixture of "I'm the biggest fan", jealousy, and a touch of psychosis"

- "Doug Maher is the worst of the worst when it comes to creepy fanbo-ism.

And oh how I pity the poor security and sound personel who have to endure him at these shows."

- "My own experience of Doug is minor but goes back to the R30 tour...show 2 in Charlotte. We were both "apparently"...at least I WAS...listening to soundcheck and he called in to have someone post bullshit here about them soundchecking a song I know they didn't. He then later at the end of the show....(he was in the front row..I was in the third)....claimed to talk to Howard and get all these "facts" to post to us which were bullshit because when the show ended he was directly in front of me walking STRAIGHT out of the venue at the point of no return gates...you know the ones that say "no readmittance".

Oh and for stalking purposes...I only knew it was him because of a picture of him I saw here...he was easy to recognize at the show. I used to think he was a great rumor provider for this website and that we all benefitted or stood to from his posts....he just an attention seeker..or as Zo said..."a nobody who thinks he is somebody".

Now, the same Lamoureux that Maher supposedly quotes in that article who was going to so much effort to find additional footage said later when he was asked about Lock and Key missing from ASOH that he didn't even know it existed, that doesn't make any sense. The same guy who was searching for any available footage couldn't find one of the songs that had already been released? Give me a break. That's the guy you're apparently banking on and willing to challenge people to bets over. The guy's a total nut.

I know all about Fogolabs but they're seemingly impossible to contact, at least their archive group is. The only other thing I've done is try to find an e-mail address for Lamoureux but I can't find one. It's not really worth my time unless someone else makes the same claim that Maher did. As I said, the whole idea of waiting for Blue-Ray so they can release another 40 minutes of almost 25 year-old videotape quality footage just doesn't even make sense.

Haha, yeah, sorry about how long-winded that was but there's no other way to describe him other than with just a series of anecdotes. It's not any one thing, it's a whole history of looniness. I've never interacted with him directly but after years of exposure to him I've just come to realize how infamous he is.

...yeah

That's why I waited for the end of the format war. Beta taught me a thing or 2 about competing formats. Some retailers are offering money to trade in your HD-DVD for (very limited) money back. You might want to investigate what (if anything) you can get in unloading it - because in all honesty, outside of being a future collectible, it's going to do nothing but lose value. I'm waiting for the price of BluRay to come down. And now Microsoft is saying that the future isn't in discs, but in downloading. Guess there heart really wasn't in HD-DVD, then. tongue.gif

Beta??? You are really showing your age... (Why can't I find the old guy emoticon?)

biggrin.gif

I'm right there with you...I remember a VCR that only worked for 60 minutes at a time...

Although, I also remember 8 tracks!!! (Not reel-to-reel, though...)

Can't say I'm not impressed.

Nice job, Snowdog!

The interesting thing to me is that I tend to think of the quoted person (Lamoureux) as the source of that info, but it's really this Maher guy who is "interviewing" him that is the source. I remember reading that piece a while back and getting all excited. Damn!

I remember Beta VCRs, rotary phones, typewriters, TVs with only 12 channels, 8 inch floppy disks, and a world without the internet. old.gif

I don't feel that old. I'm only 34. smile.gif

Snowdog nice job finding quotes about him and what not. But one little thing. Didn't Ouchie turn out to be a stalking lunatic anyway on CP? From what I get he turned quite ugly on there with some regs and did the same thing to people that Maher had been complaining about for years.

I still don't see why it is too hard in this day and age for someone to get some info out of Fogo. I see they have relaunched their web site and they don't have a lot of the information up that they used to. It used to have a the ASOH Rush font and said they were the exclusive home to all of Rush's recordings.

As for all of the Maher stuff? Who cares? I mean Drew2112 on CP has mislead and been wrong about a dozen things and flat out lied or been cryptic about total crap. I appreciate any real info I can get from these boards but take it all with a grain of salt until I see it in my hands.

Just wanted to make note on the rare early 1980s footage. Wasn't that on R30 on their Permanent Waves tour? Granted it wasn't much but I know there is some stuff there.

I think Rush themselves have said things and done another. We can all use the set list "revamp" argument for this leg. Just giving benefit of the doubt here that maybe the show was going to be issued as a full show and then the idea was nixed?

I really don't care either way because Rio just kills the R30 show biggrin.gif

I remember reading that Geddy Lee said they were worried the setlist was too similar to the Rush in Rio DVD, so they decided to edit out some songs. He also said they regretted it and someday they may release the entire concert on DVD.

I never bought into that. If that were the case, why create an R30 set list that is so close to that of Rio?

Not that close, maybe a little more than half?
