To be honest, the BL output is pretty high, in hindsight I'd probably would perfer the Gibson PAF sound..(next project if I ship you my 83 MIJ early next year??..ha).but that's just my perference...

No charge for the decal man. Just PM me an address.

Which L500 did you get? I'm using the rhythm pickup model and it's just right.

If yours is too hot, lower the pickup a bit.

I had the rhythm L500 in the yamaha I got last christmas but found it too weak for my tastes. I picked up the L500L and I like it a lot more. It really nails the GUP tone with it's emphasis on the highs. I do have to roll back the treble on the guitar a bit to get the right sound. I love that pick up and I absolutely LOVE that guitar.

Here's the pics of the reworked Lifeson Strats.

This one got the red body from the MIM Strat and a mirrored pickguard. It still has all the other parts from the blue MIJ Strat with the exception of the new 3 way toggle. I had to rout the body for the recessed Floyd.

This is the white Sportscaster with the neck from the MIM Fender and a new headstock decal. This neck is way more comfy for me than the Mighty Mite neck it used to have. The body is from Warmoth.

Here are some pics of their friends that I took just now for the hell of it.

Classical on a stick.

I'm finally happy with the whole bunch now. I have them all playing and sounding about as good as they can get. Looks wise, everything is just right for the tribute band.

I do still want to add a Les Paul with a Floyd Rose eventually...

The only drawback is the maple neck. All Alex's Strats had rosewood fingerboards.

Not to be a correctionist a-hole (ok, I do. see my signature), but I just saw the Limelight studio video again tonight on VH1CL, and noticed that Alex is playing a modified strat, all black, with a maple fretboard.

So pete, now that I've made a bad first impression, let me stroke your ego with compliments regarding the modifications and improvements. Maybe you should open your own shop.

Seeing the pics of the modified axes makes me want one. Not sure if I would want to modify a Squier as I worry the quality of the bodies and necks (which would probably be the only original parts remaining) may be sub par. I actually have been watching Craigslist in my area for any possible MIM Strats that may be going cheap, although I am not ready to buy yet. And I'm not ready to start chopping on my white MIM Fat Strat. I think a MIM Strat with a Floyd Rose licensed tremolo, like the ones Fender has been offering the past couple of years, would work almost perfectly for a project like this. They are only available with rosewood fretboards, which shouldn't present a problem unless you are trying to copy the Limelight Strat.

I have also had thoughts about having my black Epi LP mod'ed with a Floyd tremolo. I am not sure how to undertake that, other than looking up guitar techs in the area, which I wouldn't even know where to start. After all, I would not want to get ripped off.

Nope, Mexico builds Fat Strats with a fender licenced Floyd.

Pete can build Hentors. Don't insult the man's talents and attention to detail.

personally I'd like to start over with this black one..... even have the 70's headstock..yummie...I better logoff before I cave...

Hey, don't get mad at me. I knew those MIM Fat Strats with the licensed Floyds weren't Hentors. I just commented that they might be good starting points for Hentor modifications, except for the presence of the locking nut, which I think is absent from the Hentor.

btw, where's pete? Was I correct on the presence of Alex's Hentor with the maple fretboard?

Yes, The black one was a '77 strat with a stock maple neck that he bought new about that year. After Signals he replaced the maple neck with a rosewood one from Shark Custom Guitars in Canada. I've never seen a photo of the red or white one with anything but rosewood, and the white one was switched to a Shark neck too when it became the "hentor" during GUP.

"It drove me crazy trying to get used to the Strat's maple neck and fretboard, and there was so much lacquer on it when I bought the guitar that it was quite difficult to handle. I've had all the finish removed to where it's now bare wood, but the Stratocaster still doesn't sustain like the 355. Kim Mitchell, who's with the Max Webster Band, has a couple of Strats with rosewood fingerboards, and they feel really nice. I get a good vibrato, and they seem to sustain better than the maple-neck ones. I may get a rosewood fingerboard for my Strat too, in the future. In addition, the neck is a lot smaller on the Strat, and it feels alien to me especially after playing Gibsons for so long. But I eventually got a new black one a few years ago to replace my 335 as a second guitar, which sort of forced me in to getting used to it."

- Alex 1980 during Permanent Waves tour.

The videos are actually misleading, I believe he recorded Limelight with the white strat (commonly referred to as the Limelight guitar), and Vital Signs with the black strat. The lip sync vids show the opposite, which is not consistant with what Alex has quoted to have used.

Yup.

That's what I've always heard.

Haha, you'd never thought you'd see this thread again, did you!?

... *ahem* >_>

Well, it has CONTENT OF EPIC PROPORTIONS some goodie content for aspiring hentor makers, and that was what I was going to ask about, more specifically about the pickup. I know about the L-500 R or L stuff already, but there's one more variable to it. The bill lawrence page lists shielded and unshielded variants of the L-500's. Is it known which one was used? Does it make any major difference?

This is the one I believe is correct (and the one I have).

"The Original Shielded L-500 pickup with Cream Coils, Chrome-Plated Housing and Curved Blades made by Bill Lawrence in 1980!"http://www.wildepickups.com/images/original500_izit.jpg

fyi, shielding provides extra protection against 60 cycle hum (unwanted noise in your pickups/guitar).

Ah, okay. Thanks!

All there's left now is to choose between the L and R version. But i'll get to that right at the moment i order one... smile.gif

L = Lead (bridge position)

R = Rhythm (Neck position)

You want the L

I've bought 3 of the L500 Rhythm pups so far. That is the same one that Alex used in the Sportscasters.
If anyone wants that GUP sound, that is the pickup to get.

The man suggests otherwise.
