I wish I had that kind of skill. How exactly do you learn to build guitars?

There are schools that you can go to.

Ok, This is just about the coolest thing i've seen in months.

Very nice work Pete.

Can you pls detail the cost of everything and were you ordered it?...humbucker, floyd, switches, etc...

And where do I send the check for the white one??? ha.

seriously, I do have an old '82 white fender japan squier that could use a facelift...and this looks like could be it.

(also there was a good pic of the headstock / body on Guitar Magazine cover, cira July 1984 - w/ Spirit of the Radio Tab...i think that one was blue if I remember, i can't find it online, but with dig it out of my parent's basement if no one can find it.

Thanks for the kind words.

The white one is a keeper but I am considering selling the red one.

I have that issue right here. When Pete first asked for a pic that's the first mag I looked at. The cover pic shows his black Strat, and the headstock is blank. He needed to see the writing on the white Strat's headstock. wink.gif

I might rebuild this one, it's not as ugly as the white one (had the white w/ black picguard for a long time..)

Pete, pls post your handwork details when you get a chance...thanks n great job...

Thanks Again Pete

So Pete, is this about right?

The Real Deal

'77 Vintage Fender Body & 2 Original Fender Pickups - $600

Shark Neck - If you can find one

Bill Lawerence L500 - $50

Original Floyd Rose - $170

Powder Graphite in place of a nut lock- huh?

Blank Pickguard - $30

Gibson Switch - $10

Hentor Label - $20

Dean Markley 9 gauge strings - $10

Pete's skill in wiring, paint, and detail - Priceless

The Economic Deal

New Overseas Squier Strat Body / Neck - $150

Bill Lawerence L500 - $50

Cheapo "licenced" Floyd Rose - $60

Blank Pickguard - $30

Gibson Switch - $10

Hentor Sportscastor Label - $20

Dean Markley 9 gauge strings - $10

My skill in wiring, paint, and detail - "Oops, oh Mother Trucker!"

btw, I just picked up a 51 Squier Strat / Tele for $99 that's seems ideal for custom work (although not this job with the tele features). I'm surprised how well it sounds stock for a hundo .

anywho, nice solo on the trees, pete. i enjoyed that mp3.

You're pretty close.

Here's the breakdown on the Hentor.

I had a lot of the parts to start with but I'll figure what they originally cost me.

Body- Ebay-$60

Neck- Mighty Mite-$76

Tuners-Planet Waves locking-$45

Neckplate & screws-$6

pickguard-Warmoth-$22

Lawrence L500-$60

Duncan single coils-$100

3 way toggle-$12

250K CTS volume pot-$5

500k push/pull pot-$14

.47uF capacitor-$1

knobs-$5

Old style Floyd Rose bridge(no fine tuners)-Ebay-$65

Tusq nut-$8

Trem cover plate- $3

jack plate & jack-$9

mini toggle-$6

misc. screws-$5

Decal paper for logo-$4

Total-$506.00

I only spent about $260 though. The parts in italics I already had.

I have more in the red strat (about $475) and I think I'll have it up for sale very soon.

My white one is now pretty damn close to Alex's.

The white one in the Limelight video is the same guitar, it just got more mods since then. In the video it was a stock 70's Strat with a Gibson humbucker in the bridge and a Floyd Rose trem.

My red one is pretty close to the one in the Distant Early Warning video. The only difference is that I went with a recessed Floyd Rose on it.

The Black one was identical to the white one in hardware. The differences are that the pickups were black and he used a mounting ring on the Lawrence L-500 bridge pickup. You can get some good looks at it if you freeze frame the "Grace Under Pressure" concert video. He plays it throughout most of the show.

No pete, the white one is exactly the hentor...it's tough because the red one looks different in lots of alex's photos, some look cherry red with a mirror pg, some look more wine red with just a black pg...idk maybe he had 2...

anywho, do you which model Gibson hummer he had before the Bill Lawerence?

Check out:

I didn't know he used the red strat on Camera Eye? Good stuff!

No way to be sure on the Gibson pickup.

It sounds like a PAF type though. A 57 Classic would get you in the ballpark.

I have that Musictoyz page bookmarked. Good stuff.

BTW, the red Strat is sold. Someone from here PM'd me and bought it.

Oops.

Spoke to soon. The buyer had to back out so I suppose it's off to Ebay.

reply to an email request from a guitar buff in Canada on Shark guitars:

I'm still working on the case!!

"Shark used to operate in Bells Corners in a small shop from about 1981 to about 1984. He build guitars as well as making parts for other guitars. As far as I remember he did build one for Alex around 1984, but only one. He wanted more but by that time Shark was out of business, so he had some guitars made by Russ Heinl instead."

(note: the Signature Guitar Company collaboration with Alex Lifeson and Russ Heinl got going in 1987.)

Hey Pete,

Thought you would enjoy a pic of my JV Squier pre-hentor Limelight strat circa 1983......that's as close as I could get at the age of 12...haha.

I still remember the first time I saw the Exit Stage Left VHS tape, and it blew my mind (on our top loading VCR for you youngsters out there)

Just picked it up from the folks house..It's basically unplayed since 1989 when I bought my first American Standard Strat..

anywho, have a good one...

Very cool.

Those early Squiers were great guitars. That one wouldn't need much to be a Hentor clone.

I remember top load VCR's. We had one on those. It was huge and had a corded remote.
