Funny how Keaton was in Birdman as a superhero actor and now he's playing another costumed bird man this time a villain...
Yup. Batman, Birdman, Vulture.

If he were in a TRF movie he'd play dual roles: you AND goose!

And he could pull it off too because he's versatile! :hail:
I still think of him as the guy in Night Shift with Henry Winkler.

Ah yes, Bill BLAZEjowski. I loved him in that. Must've seen that at least a dozen times. Looooooovebrokers!

That role was my intro to Keaton.

Also, it was the first Ron Howard directed film that I saw too. Cunningham was directing Fonzie!
Yeah that was my intro to Keaton too. I didn't expect him to play Batman 7 years later. I think he was fairly unknown in 1982 I don't think he really broke out until 1988 with Beetlejuice.
Night Shift was his first big role. I think he had had only 1 or 2 very small parts in unknown movies before that.

BUT before Beeteljuice he starred in Mr. Mom and JOHNNY Dangerously. I liked both but Mr. Mom I remember as being pretty successful.
Yeah I remember them I always think that they came after Beetlejuice for some reason.

What did you think when he got chosen to play Batman?

Like everyone else then I was like "WTF?!!"
I already liked him but I thought of him as a comic actor and that it was bad casting. BUT when I saw it I said I was wrong and that he did well. I still think he did well.

It's just that I don't like those Burton ((or Schumacher)) Bat films anymore. Nothing to do with Keaton though.

When I saw Keaton in Pacific Heights that's when I thought he was really good. Between 1982's Night Shift and 1990's Pacific Heights, he did Mr. Mom, Johnny Dangerously, Beetlejuice, and Batman. That's a pretty big spread. Even the comedic style (in those that are comedies) is different.

He even did a couple of lesser movies in that time which I could enjoy in that 80s formulaic movie way --- Gung Ho and Touch and Go.

He was definitely better than I thought he'd be, not a definitive Batman but respectable. I though of him as comic actor too. I'll tell you one thing he made a much better transition from comedy to serious drama than Tom Hanks did. Keaton blows Hanks away. The only reason I don't totally despise Hanks is I still like lot of his comedy films like The Burbs, Bachelor Party, The Money Pit and Dragnet. Hey have you seen The Burbs yet?
Haven't seen Burbs yet.

But this chatter has made me finally vote for Keaton! Sorry Kurt (he'd be my close #2 pick).

I gave B+ or higher grades to everyone but Mel. He's not bad and he has his moments but he's at least one letter grade down from Keaton, Russell, and Rourke.

Yeah he played a real bastard in Pacific Heights. I still don't completely understand his character's motivations though. I mean I do find Melanie Griffith annoying and Mathew Modine has got a face that I find I want to punch but I don't think I'd go to Pacific Heights lengths to express myself about this... :smoke:

What I didn't like about Pacific Heights was the way these two pussies suddenly turned the tables on Keaton and won the day. That was bullshit!

duck, that's becoming too big of a scroll.

Pacific Heights for me was all about Keaton perfectly portraying a sneaky bastard. The plot itself was kind of average but he bumped it up with what he did.

As for punching Modine in the face... He must've really bugged you in Vision Quest as he got the babe + he was beating some wrestler ass.

I just looked him up, I was surprised to see that he's 58 but then I realised shit I'm 50 myself. I was looking at 58 like it was some far far away age that I'm way way off. Obviously I'm not used to this whole 50 deal yet. :hail:

What's the difference? Two months ago you weren't 50 and now you are.

What'd you think of Modine in Full Metal Jacket? They originally planned on Anthony Michael Hall in the role of Private Joker but that fell through and we ended up with Modine. He did fine in that I think.

I dunno but ultimately the numbers don't really affect you, you are what you are.

Yeah he was ok in that. I don't necessarily hate him as an actor he just annoys me.

I find him to be pretty blah most of the time. He doesn't really stand out.
