Pluto - We're Almost There!!

In 2006, the people at NASA calculated the time New Horizons would arrive at Pluto.

The spacecraft was launched, and about ten years later, it arrived at Pluto.

The difference between the estimated travel time and actual travel time was about A MINUTE.

THIS is why learning mathematics is so important, boys and girls!!

Check out the progression of photos over the years as technology has advanced

I've forgotten all my calculus. I shouldn't design spacecraft.

Pluto's largest moon, Charon (named after the Greek ferryman of Hades, who transported dead souls across the rivers Styx and Acheron):

Relative to Pluto, Charon is HUGE! Its diameter (1208 km) is just over half that of Pluto's diameter (2370 km).

Its mass/gravity is enough to create a barycenter (center of mass) outside of Pluto. The two bodies orbit each other every 6.4 days.

Yeah me too. I've always loved astrophysics.

This is what Pluto and Charon would look like......moments before colliding with Earth and killing all of us......

I'm surprised they're that big. I always thought Pluto was really teeny.

Looks like it would only take out the west coast. I'm not worried.

You should worry. If it collided with Earth at several thousand mph, the impact crater would be larger than North America, and the entire surface would FRY......:outtahere:

If it makes you feel better, the entire planet would be annihilated too

Maybe, maybe not. Perhaps Goatnut would just have it's hairs singed a bit. Man that'd smell awful
