Cowboys, Browns take from each other’s discard pile

If the Cowboys and Browns knew how things were going to wind up playing out, they might have just made a trade before Saturday’s cut to 53 players instead of waiting to acquire a player from the other team via waivers.

There’s no going back in time, though, so we’ll just have to wonder what the world’s reaction to a trade involving LaRon Byrd and Donald Hawkins might have been.

Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Browns have claimed wide receiver LaRon Byrd off of waivers from the Cowboys. Byrd caught one pass for the Cardinals in 2012 and spent last season on injured reserve before his failed attempt to make the Cowboys. He’s 6-foot-4, 220 pounds and fast, but it hasn’t translated to the field to this point in his career.

The same could be said of former Jet Stephen Hill, whose agent thought the Browns would have interest in his client but Byrd’s arrival would seem to make that less likely.

The Cowboys announced that they claimed Hawkins from the Browns to bolster their situation at guard. He was only in Cleveland for a short while as they claimed him off waivers from the Eagles last week. Dallas cut tackle John Wetzel to make room.

Report: Patriots trade Ryan Mallett to Houston

Posted by Mike Wilkening on August 31, 2014, 1:38 PM EDT

One week before their regular season opener, the Texans have acquired a quarterback to whom they’ve long been linked.

The Patriots have traded backup Ryan Mallett to Houston, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported Sunday.

According to Tania Ganguli of ESPN.com, the Texans will give up a sixth-round pick for Mallett.

In Houston, Mallett will work again with Bill O’Brien, the former Patriots offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach who’s now the Texans’ head coach.

For New England, the move makes rookie Jimmy Garoppolo the only backup to starter Tom Brady.

The focus now turns to whether Mallett can overtake Ryan Fitzpatrick for the Texans’ starting job. The trade could also potentially lead to another roster move for Houston, which now has four quarterbacks. Were a quarterback to be moved, third-year pro Case Keenum would seem to be the prime candidate.

A 2011 third-round pick from Arkansas, the 26-year-old Mallett has appeared in four regular season games, all as a reserve. He is in the final year of his contract. Whether the Texans will extend his deal or let him play out 2014 under his current contract is another storyline to watch.

Damn...beat me to it.

Mallet turned out to be a bit of a bust for Belicheat.

Pats get only a conditional 2016 seventh-round pick for Mallett

http://nbcprofootballtalk.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/mallettap1.jpg?w=250

There apparently wasn’t much of a trade market for quarterback Ryan Mallett.

Despite talk that the Patriots might get a mid-round draft pick in trading Mallett, they gave him up today for only a conditional 2016 seventh-round pick. That’s what the Texans gave up to acquire Mallett, according to ESPN.

It’s unknown what the conditions are, but the deal likely includes provisions based on Mallett’s playing time or how long he remains on the Texans’ roster, so that the Texans could end up sending New England a sixth-round pick if Mallett becomes Houston’s starter.

Bottom line, teams just weren’t interested in giving up anything of real value to acquire Mallett, whom the Patriots drafted in the third round of the 2011 NFL draft. A late pick a year and a half from now isn’t nothing, but it’s next to nothing. And that’s what the Patriots settled for.

In Houston, Mallett will be reunited with head coach Bill O’Brien, who coached Mallett as an assistant in New England. O’Brien may see something in Mallett, but Bill Belichick didn’t see enough in Mallett to make him worth keeping, as long as the Patriots could get anything of even moderate value in return.

The fourth game of the preseason has great predictive value! Any game where the starters don't play a down is extremely important...

RG3: We fixed what we needed to fix on offense

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III served as a talking point last preseason because no one had seen him play since tearing his ACL and he was a talking point again this summer because he was playing.

Griffin took too many hits in a game against the Browns and played poorly against the Ravens, leading to concerns about how quickly he’s picking up the offense installed by new head coach Jay Gruden this offseason. Griffin played down those concerns by pooh-poohing “doubters” and saying people were overreacting to preseason performances, a theme he stuck with on Monday when he said that all the work the team did in the offseason would now “come to fruition.”

“We fixed what we had to fix in practice,” Griffin said, via CSNWashington.com. “That’s for us to know and you guys to find out.”

We’ll all find out Sunday when the Redskins square off against the Texans. Any struggles in that game will lead to even more doubters for Griffin and Washington and they won’t have the preseason caveat to use as an explanation.

Hey, watch out for Romo this year. He's going to have to put some huge numbers because his team may have to score 50 points a game to win anything. 5400 yds is not out of the question.

First of all,

It was the preseason. Second, they have been sh** since 2002. I have been a die hard fan since the late 60's. Until I see some great improvement It will be this. :boo hiss:

Wes Wanker suspended four games for violating PED policy

Posted by Michael David Smith on September 2, 2014, 7:01 PM EDT

http://nbcprofootballtalk.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/a4535bdcdfac6d08d133446eff7625a6.jpeg?w=250

Broncos receiver and Woody Harrelson lookalike Wes Wanker has been suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL’s policy against performance-enhancing drugs.

According to multiple reports, Wanker tested positive for a banned amphetamine.

Wanker becomes one of the highest-profile NFL players to be busted for a PED violation. Wanker led the league in receptions three times while with the Patriots, and he was a component of the best offense in the NFL last year with the Broncos.

There’s been much talk in recent days about whether Wanker would be healthy enough to play in Week One after suffering a preseason concussion, but now that talk is moot: Wanker will miss four games regardless of whether he is cleared by the league’s concussion protocol.

The Broncos should be in OK shape at receiver even without Wanker, thanks to the signing of free agent receiver Emmanuel Sanders and the drafting of rookie receiver Cody Latimer.

Wanker will not be permitted to practice with the team during the suspension. He will be eligible to return in Week Five, what a wanker.

Source: Wanker took Molly at Kentucky Derby

Woody Harrelson

Wes Wanker’s good day at the Kentucky Derby turned out to be not so good. What a wanker.

His winnings that day exceeded $57,000. But human error resulted in the Broncos receiver being overpaid by nearly $15,000.

Now, the Woody Harrelson Kingpin movie character lookalike will lose a lot more than that due to his four-game suspension.

Per a league source, the banishment under the PED policy happened because Wanker took MDMA, a banned substance under the substance-abuse policy, that had been cut with amphetamines, a banned substance under the PED policy. (Here’s where all the Walter Whites in the crowd will try to claim in the comments and on Twitter that MDMA and amphetamines are the same thing. They’re not, Jessie.)

As happened with Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick, pure MDMA wouldn’t have triggered a violation under the PED policy. The presence of amphetamines resulted in a one-strike, four-game suspension.

If the NFL and NFLPA had struck a deal on HGH testing, Wanker likely wouldn’t have been suspended. It’s believed that the new drug-testing policies that will become effective if/when a final agreement is reached on HGH testing will result in amphetamines shifting to the substance-abuse policy during the offseason.
