Ok kids, stop playing that new record about a voiceless crow and gather round: Granda HPL is gonna tell you a story.

Once there was a songwriter called Merle Travis. He was one hell of a guitarist too. But that's not the point today.

Today we're going to talk about his miner songs. He wrote many of them and performed them too. These are songs of hardship, bleak present, no future. Still, there's always some humor, some strenght, like these men are undefeatable.

 

But maybe the best-known versions of his songs are these two. Which is your favourite?

I've been studying up on Merle Travis and Chet Atkins style picking, so I'm kind of up on this stuff. ;)

 

I read Travis picking is essential to be called a "true" guitarist. Since I can barely look at a guitar, I wouldn't know...

I read Travis picking is essential to be called a "true" guitarist. Since I can barely look at a guitar, I wouldn't know...

 

It's a great skill to have (and I can't say that I have it, by any stretch.) But there are so many great guitarists who never played that style. It's be hard to say someone like SRV or EVH, just to name two, weren't "true guitarists."

Pretty amazed you've never heard Chet Aktins. He was definitely magic.. He could play "yankee doodle" and "dixie" at the same time on the same guitar—pretty wild. Burn up youtube and prepare to be wowed.
