Snaked
Ray Daniels has never met a dollar that he didn't want to pocket... thus there will be a R40 tour, even if it's just in North America and only 30-45 dates from Mid Spring through early Fall of '14.
rocketom
They played 35 shows in 2012, will probably play 60 in 2013. Wow, real tough. I know they are getting up there in age but there are other musicians who are much older and play more extensive tours than Rush does. phil lesh and bob dylan and willie nelson and so on might do more dates a year than rush, but which show do you think is more physically and mentally demanding? a rush concert or a george jones concert? How about YES, is that music not demanding, it's Rush with less Rock. Oh and how about there upcoming 2013 tour, 3 albums in there entirty. Yes, less demanding? Yes music, if anything is more demanding, especially for the vocalist and keyboardist. And due to the albums they're playing, Steve Howe is going to get a workout as well. And I they don't have 60 dates scheduled for next year... .the Spring Tour only has 24 dates. Plus, they are all older (except Jon Davidson) :codger: Still, Yes rules I figure Rush will be playing around 60 dates. This is just the spring tour announced for Yes, they'll probably hit the UK or come back to the U.S. for some summer dates. ASIA will probably hit the road again in the fall as well so Steve Howe will get his work out. If Yes is playing a casino they are only playing albums. Mika
I agree that Rush should have a break, if they desire, especially if they're adding dates to North America again and extending their tour. But to take a couple of years off, and ignore R40? No! There's a momentum right now, starting with the Beyond the Lighted Stage film and definitely furthered with the Hall of Fame induction (not that that's a humungous deal, but it does push them more into the conventional society's limelight) and would be in their favour to keep the ball rolling. If the CA tour ends late summer, then they could have a break until autumn 2014 when R40 could happen, which could be more a retrospective tour.40 years together as a band is simply too big a milestone to miss out on, really! Preparations for it could start whilst they are 'on a break' - set lists dallied with, and start practicing the songs in spring. But, on the other hand, I do understand there's a whole different personal side to this - the boys have families and personal lives that they shouldn't miss out on. I'm very appreciative of what they've given us already, and hope that they do have a happy balance between work and 'real life', as many of us strive for. But I do think (or am afraid) that if the ball were to stop rolling now, inertia would perhaps keep it from starting up again; is Rush really going to get into new projects in 2016 or so, after a few years' break, when they are 64 years old? Well, maybe! But I have a feeling that if things slow down after this point, it's not going to reach the high of what's going on now. Especially as the boys are getting older. I mean, poor Neil's been dealing with tendonitis! All I can hope is that things will be for the best, come what may. If the boys decide after a break to pack it in, then they and their families will benefit and best wishes to them. If they want to keep on keepin' on, then hooray! As long as the ability and the drive are there, I think they'll keep going, and without need of too long of a break.
nhlrush
Here's my take.... R40 is gonna happen....i don't even think they need one new song.... i met a lot of fans during the current tour who were pretty upset with the lack of the all-time classics.... so they bring out the R40 tour, promote that all the all time favorites will be played....i.e. freewill, hemispheres material, xanadu, etc....and that brings out all the 50 year olds who grew up on rush in the late 70's....they will fill arenas with this kind of tour, nobody will leave moaning and it will be a complete success.... then, they relax a while and prepare for the next album, which i think will be the last....(but you never know) the album is released in 2016 or so.....they tour 2016-2017.....and perhaps ride into the sunset.....i mean, they could still be doing this when they are 70 years old but somehow i think they go out on top.... keep in mind about their touring.....yes, its not easy, life on the road is a struggle...but they are doing it in some sort of luxury....they are not preparing meals and doing dishes in an RV, they have first class treatment all the time....(well, except for neil, but that's his choice) they also had 10 day breaks between legs of this past fall tour and can go home and sleep in their own beds, catch up with their wives and family and recharge...they are not going three months straight....they also did not play back to back nights all fall... its hardly the touring they did back in the day when they said they would do 11 days in a row, one day off, nine more days, one day off.... ged and alex are flying everywhere....neil is doing his bmw thing..... i see them taking advantage of their popularity now, with the RRHOF induction of 2013, they will still be flying high for an R40 tour, more casual fans will come out....they will play a complete retrospective, everybody will be happy and then they focus on resting and the final chapters of their career....

Think about the following: As an example, for the first 10 show dates in support of CA they performed in 9 different states and in Winnipeg over the course of 19 days. 1 show performing in front of thousands every 2 days and flying back home (or sleeping in a hotel) in between still isn't an easy task even with the use of a private jet. Sure, they don't play as many dates or ride in a minivan anymore but they're also not 22 year old dudes anymore either.Besides, "flying everywhere" isn't as easy as it may sound. It takes some energy to do that. Edited January 1, 2013 by JohnnyBlaze
RushBoingo
Alex mentioned they have plans up to 2014 on the eddie trunk rush show, so I would assume some recognition that the "R40" will occur. I don't think they will ever fully stop existing as a band until age stops them, but I can see a change from tours to special shows, and when they agree they are not that well off to play live they will a final show, but I don't think the writting will stop. I also can still see appearances by Alex and Geddy on things like the Juno Awards and Canada's New Years Festivities and being agnowledged as 2/3s of Rush
rushfanNlv
Looking forward to the "R40 Overture". The "R30 Overture" was so much fun to play. If they take a break, good for them. My gut tells me there is still a few albums left in the band. They just appear to have so much fun doing what they are doing....and why not. Grover
Can't complain whatever they decide. They were planning an R20 in 1994 and then word came that it was most likely no gonna happen. So they may be planning an R40 but Geddy is not too keen on the idea at the moment. If they do an R40 and can manage at least 50% different than R30, that would be great. Composing new material could be done with Geddy and Alex in Toronto and Neil in California, for the most part. One kick-ass extended instrumental for the R40 tour (not a medley but a new piece) would be fun. I also think we will see an R40 tour and then one last album and tour, but no complaints whatever they decide.
losingit2k
I listened to an interview with Geddy on Planet Rock and he said that he expects to take a sustantial break after the CA tour due to the fact they have been touring/recording for 5 to 6 years straight. I kinda figured after this tour they would take an extra long break especially with Neil having a young family and all. He did talk as though he has no doubts that they will write and record again. With this in mind I might consider more than one show on the 2nd leg of the USA. My question is what is the consensus that the next time they play live, it will be because of new music or some type of throw back tour? Thoughts? Me? I'm open to anything! Both Alex and Neil have said they have touring plans through 2014, I guess Geddy is the final voice since he's the one who actually has to sing. :codger:
losingit2k
The reason I think this is a beaten horse thread is because there have already been tons of"what if" and "what's next" and "R40" theoretical threads here lately. Hey, at least he didn't post several theoretical setlists and a bunch of "rock-on" smileys. That makes this topic a winner right off the bat.
