The screen can only hold so much information. You can put 40 characters on a comic book page because the reader can take his time looking at it, absorbing what he's looking at. A movie screen is always in motion and it's *very* hard to have that much stuff going on before you overload the viewer and he shuts down (metaphorically speaking). The Avengers had the perfect number of characters. Any more and they would have bordered on overload. It would have been a tough flick to watch and keep up with.
