yeah it's too bad about the poor sound quality, because Rio is about the best performance of theirs ever caught on video. If it were recorded with the quality of R30 or S&A it would be by far the best concert video ever.

Too much importance is placed on audio quality.

This is hands down the best Rush live album, imo... R30 and to a lesser extent, S&AL are drifting into comatose areas.

You can tell what the music is doing through the "poor" audio quality.

Was RIR shot in high definition, so it can be released on BluRay?
Whas it shot in 4:3 format or 16:9 format?

It would great with a release on BluRay with 16:9 format!

This is a 2003 statement from Alan Weinrib (Geddy's brother) who was executive producer of the 'Rush In Rio' DVD here.

"The decision to forego an anamorphic version was due to limitations with some of the cameras used to film the concert. The majority of the concert was filmed in a 16:9 Digibeta format but due to the sensitivity of having cameramen distracting Neil during the show, mini remote cameras were used around him that could only be recorded in a 4:3 format. The issue of anamorphic was first raised in June and we investigated the option and what it would take to convert these tapes, which once the show was fully edited comprised about 25 - 30% of the footage used, to anamorphic. Since we were already dealing with a softer image, the process necessary to achieve anamorphic for these particular tapes would have degraded the footage further and many shots of Neil would have become blurred and all these shots would have really stood out from the rest of the program. With this footage comprising so much of the show it would have been become a distraction and as such lessen the experience for the viewer. The decision was made to maintain the strongest possible quality product and deliver a great performance, in what is still the most common format, while holding onto our intended letterbox look. The decision was purely one of giving the highest quality experience to all the viewers possible." - Allan Weinrib, Executive Producer, "Rush In Rio"

This has always sounded like a weak argument to me. Let's rephrase (and bear in mind that I'm putting words in his mouth, but go with me): "We felt it was better that you folks with widescreen TVs (you know....the only ones that care if it's anamorphic or not) use your TV's zoom feature. We feel that using that feature will always produce a better result that our professionally mastering it that way." I disagree wholeheartedly.

amazon states

SD Blu-ray range presents upscaled standard definition original material with Dolby TrueHD surround sound and Stereo for the best possible quality

To take this statement with caution, because the original audio mix was not the best, you can't do miracle by upscaling

No need to buy this. Upscaling is pretty much worthless. Just play the standard dvd in your blu-ray player and it will upscale it.

You kidding right? This is a HUGE upgrade! I love what they have done with this video. Such a improvement! Better video AND better sound.

I used to get headache from Rush In Rio. In fact, it was the only video I had never watch. Because it hurt my head so much.

But now I just love it!
