There Is Nothing Like A Dame...

Recommended Posts

Well I've been pretty busy as this is the final week of our local production of South Pacific. For those of you familiar with the musical, I am playing the part of Luther Billis, the comedic relief of the show. Here's a picture from a recent rehearsal:

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb299/rock101dotnet/Bilus-Mary-Sailors-SMALLER.jpg

I'm the one in the open jean shirt and an orange necklace. It's supposed to be one of my many souveniers of my tour of duty during WWII.

Here's a couple of links about the show here and here.

Anyway, we open this Thursday, August 7, and it runs through Sunday, August 10. Perhaps the funniest thing I have to do is a dance during the song "Honey Bun" in a grass skirt and coconut bra. 1022.gif

Two of our kids are in the show too, and they're trying to get a good video of the song. I'm sure you'd all LOVE to see that wacko.gif .

Hopefully we'll get some more pictures for you to enjoy. If any of you are in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, come check out the show!

ok correct me if I'm wrong, but are you doing the Ray Walston character?

If so, I'd really wanna see your battleship tattoo on your belly...and make it move!!! z7shysterical.gif z7shysterical.gif

like Ms 77th, we'd be there in a heartbeat. SP is my wife's favorite, and I miss taking part in the theater!

This is a wonderful TRF coincidence. Another of our members here, the very cool Madra Sneachta, played the very same part back in '04 so how cool is that?.

Madra's South Pacific.

The thread does contain a pic of Madra as Honey Bun, so you've been warned! (Just kidding, Madra!)

Oh, and Cyg, I think the gauntlet has been thrown down, we need to see a pic of you as Honey Bun, too! It's only fair, right? laugh.gif

If I were closer, I would definitely watch your performance. Good luck and let us know how opening night goes!

Yes, indeed I am playing Luther Billis, the same part Ray Walston played in the movie. I try to pay homage to "Mr. Hand"(as I remember him from Fast Times at Ridgemont High) in my portrayal.

As far as the battleship tattoo, well it's gone from a little sailboat to a big three masted ship last night. There's a girl who's been drawing it on with a Sharpie every night.

As far as the "belly roll" is concerned, I've tried all summer long to master the art of rolling my belly to no avail. I believe it's because I have too much "ocean" to create any "motion". I've resorted to hula dancing which seems to make the director laugh, so I guess it's working OK.

This is the second show I've done with our local group in as many years. I played Bert Healy in Annie last summer. I used to do the school musical every year in high school but got away from it until last year.

Pictures are going to be posted below....beware. ph34r.gif

Jack, it's great to be in such fine company as Madra Sneachta. It's definately a fun part.

Ok, as far as a Honey Bun picture, remember you asked for it. First, I'll say this picture was taken last night (Tuesday) at rehearsal, and I had a bit of a 'wardrobe malfunction' when I first came out as Honey Bun. I felt the string in back snap and as I came stumbling out on stage, my coconuts were clacking together. I tried as best as I could to do my Honey Bun dance while holding my 'cups' in place, but during the end of the song, while we are doing the kick line, as you can see, well....you can see....

OK, you might want to hide the kids eyes from the following picture.....

.....you've been warned.....

Now I know how Janet Jackson felt...

Thanks Janie....we'd love to have you here for the show. Here's a few more pictures of Tuesday's rehearsal.

Two of our kids, Holly & Brandon, play Ngana & Jerome, the Polynesian children of Emile DeBeque. Here are a couple of pictures of them singing their song, Dites Moi, at the beginning of the show.

We had an awesome rehearsal last night....tonight is our final dress rehearsal before opening night tomorrow.

Well our run of South Pacific is over and now I'm back to just doing work. Here's a few pictures from Saturday.

Love that boar's tooth bracelet!

Here's our kids, Holly and Brandon, as Ngana and Jerome.

And finally....another coconut bra picture

http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb299/rock101dotnet/Mark_Coconuts_1.jpg

The girl drew a different ship on my belly each night.

I got a coconut bra burn one night. It was a lot of fun and we exceeded the expectations of the theatre as far as attendance is concerned. They're already talking about next year doing Guys & Dolls, which I'd love to be in.
