Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, producers of the James Bond films, and MGM announced today that Martin Campbell will direct Casino Royale, the 21st film in the 007 franchise.

This is Campbell's second time as helmer of a James Bond film. In 1995 he directed the hit Goldeneye which introduced Pierce Brosnan to the role of 007 with great success.

Wilson and Broccoli said: "We are thrilled that Martin has accepted our offer to direct 'Casino Royale'. He is an extremely talented director and we believe he will help take our films in a new and exciting direction. He is currently finishing filming 'Legend Of Zorro', the sequel to 'The Mask Of Zorro', and will be joining EON Productions shortly to work on the development of the script with our writers, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade."

MGM Vice Chairman and COO Chris McGurk said: "Martin is an incredibly exciting filmmaker. 'Goldeneye' was a wonderful movie and helped reinvigorate the Bond franchise. We're thrilled to have him back to direct the newest Bond."

Born in New Zealand, Campbell moved to England in 1966 and made his directorial debut on the popular TV series' The Professionals and Minder. He moved to America in 1986 to direct Criminal Law and Defenceless. Following Goldeneye, he went on to direct The Mask Of Zorro, Vertical Limit and Beyond Borders and is currently directing Legend Of Zorro.

Casino Royale will be released in 2006 and distributed world-wide by MGM. No decision has yet been made regarding casting for the role of 'James Bond'.

sigh...i'm still in a state of catatonic depression over the loss of Brosnan as Bond (ducks at any thrown objects)....personally I always thought he fit the role to a T...although I know he was injured in the last Bond flick, and he is getting on in years, but think of how many Bond flicks Connery did...Who are we looking at right now as replacement 007's?

NO!!!!!!!!!!! I WANT CLIVE OWEN TO BE BOND, DAMMIT!!!!! fists crying.gif

Anyone else would be a poor choice. Dougray is too girly man looking. Connery was great at it cos he is very manly, sly, wry, all the right moves.

Clive is the only one out of the names thrown around that has the right look and attitude. Period.

I'm sorry but every time I get to the name "Barbara Brocolli", I start laughing and can't read any further. Damn I'm immature.

Another Casino Royale....that's just dumb trink38.gif

Yeah, crazy name. Wonder what GHW Bush thinks of it, since he's married to a Barbara and hates broccoli.

I rented Casino Royale and it was the only Bond flick I really couldn't get into, besides Never Say Never Again. Actually, I didn't think this was a real Bond flick. I'm disappointed. I've always been a big Bond fan.

I would consider myself a fairly large bond fan

<---(look at name)------

But out of all the films, Casino Royale is the only one that I havent seen. I had heard just very poor reviews for that movie, and the general agreement that it wasnt a real bond flick (much like how Never Say Never Again and Thunderball were about 90% identical, so that I dont really consider a real Bond movie either). I wonder how they are going to rework Fleming's story of Casino Royale though, they havent done a Bond movie based on an actual Bond book in quite a while. I am in agreement with you LSM though, Brosnan IMO was the best Bond since Connery.

The announcment of the director though has certainly peaked my interest, GoldenEye was an absolutely beautiful movie, I just loved the atmosphere behind. It certainly wasnt like the last 3 films, which seemed to try to pack as much action into the film as possible, at the expense of a tangable story line. It sounds though like they are trying to return to the previous success of GoldenEye with GE's director in what could possibly an attempt to bring back the franchise's popularity with a new Bond actor. Brosnan definatly didnt get enough time, nor enough decent script ideas to really shine.

I am a James Bond nut!

Casino Royale has no links whatsoever to the Bond Franchise. It had nothing to do with the Broccolis or Saltzman. A completely separate venture, it is not one of the 20.

Never Say Never Again also has nothing to do with the bond franchise, (EON productions and Danjaq). It is a third party remake of Thunderball. The licence was temporarily unassigned to anyone and NSNA was the result. It was released at the cinemas at the same time as Octopussy, (Roger Moore).
