Camera expertise needed

What's a good, basic digital camera that's fairly easy to use? I have an older model Canon (Powershot A20) and I'm not happy with the quality of the photos. It does well in very bright light (like full sun) but when the flash comes on, it washes everything out unless I'm at lest twenty or thirty feet away, and then I need to room to be as dark as possible, Kind of makes it interesting trying to see what I'm zooming in on. It also doesn't pick out details well in shadow - I was trying to photograph a nasty crack in my mom's downstairs patio door today and, with the shadow of the porch over it, it took most of the memory card to get a couple of good shots showing the damage. (No, she isn't sure what did it. It was fine when she went out to mow the side yard, but when she came back in, it was cracked. And neither she nor I heard anything hit it.)

If you click on my blog link, you can see some of the pictures I've taken with it - it's not bad, but some of them are not so great. What do you guys recommend?

(BTW, if you don't see me back online until tomorrow evening, I haven't run out on the thread. I'm starting a new job tomorrow and I probably won't be online until later... smile.gif )

Funny that you ask this. I just got my first digital camera as a birthday gift. I got to choose it and I needed user friendly at a good price as well.

I ended up getting the Kodak, Z712 IS. It is a 7.1 mp (not bad) with a 12x optical zoom (very good), 2.5" LCD (typical). The best part is I found it at Circuit City for only $139! It was the display model. The new one in the box is still only $179. It's a very good price for the features it offers. And I shopped around for a while!

It's worth checking out.

Good Luck!

hey Maddy!

well, like Jack & AGP, I have a Sony Cybershot. It is this one pictured below:

I really like this camera. I use it all the time. This is the Second Sony Cybershot I have owned. I loved the first one too, it finally died when i dropped it one too many times... sad.gif . this recent replacement that i haven't had a year yet is nice. It's quite portable, slim design, lots of features. biggest downfall I'd say is the battery. The lithium batteries are great, but i need another one as a backup, and they are about $50.00.

We got my daughter Amber this camera for X-mas :

good camera for the money. she also uses it all the time. It also has a lithium battery. Have not personally heard anything bad about it.

I recently purchased this camera for my daughter Ryan:

and yes, i got it at Costco! It came with a free 2GB memory card.

Her Sony Cybershot camera that we got her a few years ago finally died, and I've been looking for a decent camera at a decent price ever since. The one thing we needed to have in a good camera was that it takes AA batteries. She's taking it to Spain in June, and we didn't want to have to deal with a power outlet converter for charging a camera battery.

keep your eyes open. there are going to be lots of sales right now with Graduations & Fathers Day around the corner!

P.S. all of these cameras were under $200.00

I just got this camera for mother's day and I LOVE it! Takes great pictures even in low light without the flash washing everything out. Very user friendly.

Walmart sells it as a bundle too, which was nice to get all the accessories bundled together for about $150.

This was taken in a very dark room, where you could barely see and came out very nice.

This was taken out side with out that wash out look.

Olympus FE 280

Check this camera out. yes.gif

I have a pretty expensive FuJi and while I love it... I sometimes envy CeeJ because she owns THIS camera.

It's easy to use. Takes GORGEOUS pictures and awesome movies. Is very durable and is so compact. It's a perfect little camera and isn't too expensive. It lists here for 180ish, but i'm sure you can find it cheaper than that.

Even with my Fuji, i want to buy another one of these for myself to have with me all the time.

Thanks, everyone! See, I didn't vanish. biggrin.gif

As far as my budget goes, I don't want to do what a woman I used to work with did and spend about $1500 on a Nikon digital, but I'd be willing to save up for a $200-300 model if I needed to. (I don't remember what model Nikon it was, but I'm pretty sure she got taken for a ride on it. She thought she was being quite clever ordering it from some little specialty camera store somewhere in Manhattan, but I suspect she got rooked.)

Well, depending on your environment and the type of outdoor weather you will put up with. I have this Pentax water resistant digital camera. It isn't fancy or anything but it has taken some really nice photos in all kinds of weather. Plus, I never worry about the elements and that's what I really like about it. If it gets wet no problem and to me that's peace of mind. Good luck. trink39.gif
