lerxt1990
Certain movies, to me, really capture NY in a really great way, even if the characters are not positive. This came to mind last night, when one of my favorite chick flicks came on, called "Working Girl". It's very NYC in the 80s, and it opens with the main character travelling to work on the Staten Island Ferry, with an absolutely gorgeous opening aerial shot of southern Manhattan, and naturally, a grand view of the Twin Towers. It occured to me that there are many other "NY" films that enamor me of the city. Just quickly thinking, they would be: The Three Days of the Condor The French Connection Working Girl Wall Street Metropolitan Home Alone II Mangattan (ok, lets face facts, about 95% of Woody Allen films) The Taking of Pelham 123 Saturday Night Fever A Bronx Tale The Apartment The Secret of My Success Bright Lights Big City Im sure there's others ..... http://www.deafstuffnmore.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/new%20york%20skyline.jpg
ReRushed
The Godfather films capture NY in a unique way, especially The Godfather Pt. II's depiction of Little Italy. I love Scorsese's After Hours and Taxi Driver. Marathon Man The Hot Rock When Harry Met Sally Midnight Cowboy Serpico Dog Day Afternoon The Warriors Quick Change There are a ton more... Necromancer
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o278/NecroBolt/popeofgreenwichvillage.jpg The Pope of Greenwich Village is not only an awesome film, but it's one where the surroundings are like a character as well. The Village is alive in this movie and you feel like you're really THERE during the whole film. Awesome movie. Probably Mickey's best ever. Janie
QUOTE (lerxt1990 @ Mar 9 2008, 08:25 AM) Certain movies, to me, really capture NY in a really great way... Mangattan (ok, lets face facts, about 95% of Woody Allen films) I *love* this movie. So much so that I actually, almost contemplated moving to NYC many, many, many years ago when I first saw it. It's definitely one of my favorites. Of course, I'm a huge Woody Allen fan though.

A LOT of movies and television shows ARE shot in Toronto though to simulate NYC. I guess it's far cheaper to get permits there than the real thing. I can always tell though when it's Toronto and not NYC. They can't fool us THAT much.

GeddyRulz
All of my favorite NYC movies have already been listed! For beauty, I'd take "When Harry Met Sally" (especially the autumn shots), and just about everything by Woody Allen, particularly "Manhattan." The black-and-white really captures the "romantic" view of Manhattan which Woody has. For urban realism, I'd take "Saturday Night Fever" and "The Warriors." 1-0-0-1-0-0-1
"You've Got Mail," while not a movie I loved, was a very New York movie. One that I did like that was ALL New York City was "Die Hard With A Vengeance." The chase scenes were planned out by people who really knew the layout of the city. Central Park, the bridges, and the city blocks all were pertinent to the plot.
