RushRevisited Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0210/cyga_cxo_nrao.jpg Explanation: Amazingly detailed, this false-color x-ray image is centered on the galaxy Cygnus A. Recorded by the orbiting Chandra Observatory, Cygnus A is seen here as a spectacular high energy x-ray source. But it is actually more famous at the low energy end of the electromagnetic spectrum as one of the brightest celestial radio sources. Merely 700 million light-years distant, Cygnus A is the closest powerful radio galaxy and the false-color radio image (inset right) shows remarkable similarity to Chandra's x-ray view. Central in both pictures, the center of Cygnus A shines brightly while emission extends 300,000 light-years to either side along the same axis. Near light speed jets of atomic particles produced by a massive central black hole are believed to cause the emission. In fact, the x-ray image reveals "hot spots" suggestive of the locations where the particle jets are stopped in surrounding cooler, denser gas. The x-ray image also shows that the jets have cleared out a huge cavity in the surrounding gas. Bright swaths of emission within the cavity likely indicate x-ray hot material ... swirling toward the central black hole.

I got a new telescope last month, will try to post some pics i took with my digital of the moon - need an attachment to take good ones though. This is the one I got - 1200mm focal point, 10 inch aperature... I will have some fun this winter when more is visible in the night sky http://www.telescope.com/images/us//local/products/viewlarger/T09990Avl.jpg

GhostGirl Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 Personally, I'd MUCH rather see a pic of RR with his elbow propped on the old 'scope...looking all GQ and such... "Do consider carefully its size and weight...." First time to post my own smiley...so there ya go.

afansince74 Posted September 3, 2004 Posted September 3, 2004 Awesome pics RR Am I understanding these were taken through the eyepiece, not using an adapter? If so, nicely done!

If so, nicely done! Yes they were - hard to get it to the right focal point, for every one you see there there were 40 that sucked LOL I need to get the adapter, but the problem is that it is a dobsonian base, and as many of you know, to do astrophotography of deep space nebula, etc you need an equatorial mount with drives so it moves with the earth (takes 20 minute long exposures to do nebula ans stuff right)---- I will get there tho! If anyone knows of a company that does motorized drives/GPS for dobsonians let me know! BTW those were taken with a 20mm eyepiece (1200/20 = 60x manginfication). When I went to the 10mm and 4mm, I couldnt get a picture to take well. Pic #4 I think it is (the bad pic) was with a 12mm and it just wouldn't focus right...
RushRevisited Posted September 3, 2004 Author Posted September 3, 2004 By the way, according to my Orion software, Saturn will start to rise in the middle of the night within the next 4-6 weeks! So that will be fun! (Saturn is not visible this time of year, nor Mars, nor Jupiter, nor any other cool planets because they are in the sun path right now - all that is visible now are shitty ones like Neptune, Pluto, Uranus <---- Heh heh he said Uranus, beavith
