barney_rebel
I've always wanted to learn some portrait photography, so this is the second lens for my collection of equipment: Canon 50mm F/1.4 (It retails for about $450 Cdn) - excellent for taking pictures of still objects, still people - great for low light - fast focus - amazing DOF - hard as hell to use at times I posted some of these photos already in the kid thread, but here are some photos taken with the lens: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1380/1051630771_510aaac9a2.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1282/1051630827_d174c41645.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1295/1051630265_3f2f831407.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1109/1043937903_fd4544f58b.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1416/1053234424_54448c5d01.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1266/1061569627_6cc818c4b6.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1370/1034627216_3e21e39701.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1301/1033705597_813c472c05.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1325/1033705111_9a54a43965.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1154/1033577353_e3c6567ef9.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1257/1033577539_a784f4f63f.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1394/1033577263_989df98dbe.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1407/1033577157_599847f767.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1114/1033577639_9c316cad9b.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1410/1034626714_d4f32118aa.jpg and with extension tube for macro shots: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1332/1033534343_d7aba9069f.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1003/1033534083_a204de12df.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1067/1033534053_d2c22815c2.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1023/1033533791_8ed88b690d.jpg

rickyrob
Seriously tho' Barney, what makes this particular lens so special? Its a 50mm, which is pretty standard by way of focal lengths, yet you get these amazing pics. So expensive too. What is your standard lens that you generally used before buying this, and what made you choose this lens? What is your standard lens that you generally used before buying this, and what made you choose this lens? I already have an "everyday zoom lens" (18-200mm). I want something that specializes in portraits so people can oooh and awww at Ryan's photos when he can pose properly. No zoom lens on the market will ever match the quality of a fixed or "normal" lens. Of course, a big minus of a fixed lens is that you have no zoom. But, when you have a fixed focal length, you can have a very low f-stop and it's amazing under low light and it creates a very nice depth-of-field. It's not a lens for everybody. It's a specialized lens. Most people would probably buy a wide-angle lens after their everyday lens. Not me though - don't see myself traveling too much in the near future. I must admit, when I looked again, I saw it was an f1.4, which is quite a bit larger aperture than you usually get. My old Pentax 35mm SLR which I lost in Benidorm was brilliant. It had a 55mm lens with an f2.8 aperture. I would imagine you could get some really good detail from an f1.4 without having to use flash (?), and naturally obtain that 'faded out blurred' background which will enhance the detail you are focussing on. Precisely - but the drawback to that is - If the subject moves, or turns slightly, you get lots of blur (terrible for moving targets) - You need to focus close (great for face shots), terrible for far-away shots I busted my ass to get this shot this morning: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1127/1092158383_84b5358218.jpg But when he sits still: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1016/1092122469_4f51324853.jpg
Mustard Death
Those are great lenses man! I got a chance to use a Nikkor 50mm F/1.4 the other day... it was great. I'm probably gonna end up investing in a F/1.8 though... since they're a lot cheaper and will work fine for me. Edited to say that first picture you posted is great... his eyes are brilliant. It's not that it's a bad picture, but the quality and design on the lens is terrible. You can never go too cheap when it comes to lenses. You can go cheap on everything else, including the camera. Well, I have an older friend who knows a lot more about photography than I do... and he said Nikkor F/1.8's are pretty much just as good as F/1.4/s, for like 1/2 the price. I'm definitely gonna do more research before I actually buy anything, but thanks for that tip. I'll read up on the Nikkor's.

Here is a good page for you. http://photo.net/equipment/canon/ef50/ I have no doubt the F/1.8 takes nice pictures - it's just that the parts aren't as nice, so the F/1.4 is better built. On my Flickr account, people were complaining the F/1.8 didn't last and it broke down after extensive usage. They bought the F/1.4 second time round, and wished they would have invested in the F/1.4 the first time round (mind you this is Canon - can't say the same for the Nikon).
