What are some MUST-SEE movies?

Ok, this is not a place for a laundry list of your favorite movies, but to list one, or two or a select few that are must-sees, and explain WHY they are a must see.

 

 

I'll start with the 1982 best picture winner:

I'm a bit prejudiced here as he is a personal hero of mine. This movie should be required vieiwing as far as I'm concerned. It's the story of a remarkable man who achieved remarkable things with a simple message that was so far ahead of it's time that most of the world STILL isn't ready for it 60 years after his death.

 

If you haven't seen this, I highly recommend renting it. It's an amazing movie about an even more amazing human being.

this 1979 movie is a classic, one of pacinos best ! the court room scene at the end may be my alltime favorite. this is a must see movie. i give it 4 **** two thumbs so far up the wazoo youll be whiseling zippity doo da !

Val Kilmer is brilliant as Doc Holliday. It's his greatest performance. Ever.

The gunfight at the OK Corral is recreated in painstaking detail according to the most reliable firsthand accounts.

i guess the reason i loved this so much and it has stuck with me all these years is because it's about loss, death, suffering, and maybe, makes you think about what it COULD be like on the other side.....

Why? Can't explain it. They're hilarious, yet poignant. Silly yet deep. Ridiculous yet introspective.

 

They're just awesome. If you haven't seen them, GET THEM.

This is my wife's favorite movie (well outside of LOTR and Harry Potter), but still. I agree, it's an amazing creation of a movie. The scenes where he's inside of a painting are visually stunning, but the whole movie is really something.

I see this movie every chance I get, and luckilly it's on tv pretty regularly. Definitely one of my top-25 movies at least.

You trash Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Star Wars, but you love Kevin Smith?

 

I don't know what it is, but I generally can't get into Kevin Smith movies, and I don't see what the cultish appeal is that many people seem to get. Dogma in particular I thought was just pretty bad, though many seem to swear by it for some reason. Chasing Amy I saw when it came out, and I thought it was pretty good. The only one of his I've seen that I really especially enjoyed was Jersey Girl.

 

I guess mostly I don't really get into the Jay and Silent Bob characters. I find them kind of annoying and it gets old pretty fast, but to each their own.

Wings of Desire (1987)

Ok, this is not for everyone, and I'll explain why.

 

This movie won the Cannes Film Festival in 1987, and it's the movie that City of Angles (Meg Ryan, Nicolas Cage) was based on, only City of Angels wasn't 1/10th of what the original was IMHO. They butchered it and completely changed the ending. It's ok, but it doesn't have the style the original had. Wings of Desire was art, pure and simple.

 

Ok, this movie is about angels on the earth watching over people, and it takes place in Berlin, Germany. It's definitely not for everyone. It's mostly in black and white (some is in color), it's very slow paced, it's ponderous, it's very heavy on dialogue, it's mostly in German (though some parts are in French and some are in English), so that's gonna turn off some people from the get-go. If, however, you can handle these aspects, you're in for one of the deepest, most intense and most beautiful movies you're ever likely to see.

 

I have to really be in the mood to see this movie and sike myself up for it because it's an EXPERIENCE.

I don't like Kevin Smith movies, either. They're just not funny. To me, Jay and Silent Bob's 'humor' has always been on the level of: "Look! I made a doody!"

Shawshank Redemption. 1 of the only (if not THE only) movie that is flawless. A well-paced story that keeps you involved. Superb acting by Robbins & Freeman. 1 of the easiest movie villains (the warden) to hate. I must've seen this flick at least 20 times.

Kevin Smith makes films based on his own life experiences, which I can definitely relate to. He's a huge comic nut and there's a lot of the comic book world in most of his movies. He doesn't just rip off Japanese Feudalism movies like Lucas did, or bring a boring ass book to life with a huge budget like that other guy did.   So take THAT hippy boy.

I haven't seen anything past Dogma. And I didn't like Dogma that much. But Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy I enjoyed quite a bit. As Necro stated, Jay and Silent Bob weren't a huge part of the 1st 3 (especially in Clerks and Chasing Amy...and that suited me fine). And I think you almost HAVE TO like comics to fully appreciate Mallrats.
