RUSHHEAD666
Funny how much I hate the Grateful Dead yet I made up my screen name "RUSHHEAD" to sound like a "Dead Head." Hey Goober or anyone else! I need to understand something about the DEAD! The album cover of AMERICAN BEAUTY is a beaut! Are the letters on that cover supposed to spell something else besides "AMERICAN BEAUTY?" 1001001 S.O.S. Hey Goober, I know I ripped the Dead on that other thread but I have a quick DEAD story for you that I think you will like!!!! Before I moved out of my parents house I lived in Alamo California. Well my next door neighbors who we had known for like 12 years moved to Martinez, and some "newbies" moved in. It was a single woman and her kid. I think she had one. Maybe two. Anyway, she was the ex-wife of one of the keyboard players in the Grateful Dead. Sorry Goober I do not know his name, but he was the dude who killed himself with a speed ball of blow to the head. I think. Right? Didn't she leave him and he got depressed and killed himself??? She was nice to me. Oh well maybe you know!! To make a long story short. My parents live on a dead end street, hence there was a big yellow sign that said "DEAD END STREET" in big black letters. Well one night I was driving home from Safeway where I worked and as I turned down my street, my eyes saw something that could not believe. Some Dead Head spray painted over the "END" and turned it into "HEAD." Classic I thought!! LOL! It said "DEAD HEAD STREET!!!!" Crazy shit man!! I can't believe I remembered that story!! I am listening to AMERICAN BEAUTY again right now. Not bad, not great!!!!! Sincerely, A RUSH HEAD for LIFE!!!!! Earl
tangy
In my experiece, alot of people are suprised when they hear American Beauty for the first time, basically saying " I didn't think the dead sounded like that" Great ablum with great lyrics. rushgoober
It says American Beauty, but it can also be read as American Reality. I think the guy you're thinking of is Brent Mydland, though they went through at least 4 keyboard players in their career, kind of like Spinal Tap went through drummers. In my experience, and in many other people I've known, the Dead have to grow on you, and many people don't "get" it right away. Listening to quality live tapes/cd's gives you a better idea of what they were really all about, as they were (and even by their own admission) a live band as opposed to a studio band, even though they did also have some great studio albums. Live is where they really shined, and unlike a group like Rush, each song was played vastly differently each time, and each night they played different sets, and the jams and segues were where they really got creative... thestand
I've never purchased a live album. With how open their recording policies were, you can get just as good quality tapes as the official releases for free. I've got around 300 shows between my 2 jam band hard drives. Two jam band hard drives. I don't know whether that's impressive or hilarious.
rushgoober
There are serious Dead Heads that try to collect it ALL, but not the majority. It seems there are almost two kinds of dead heads, once like me that Love the Dead and listen to lots of other music, and ones that listen to NOTHING, or vitually nothing, but the Grateful Dead. You have to be selective in live dead, but it can take awhile to find out what you like and what you don't. Personally I've found their best live years to be 1968, 1970 and 1977, and mostly from 79 onwards it was too watered down with more mediocre tunes for me to be too interested, in addition to them just not being in as tip top shape as they often were in the 70's. RUSHHEAD666
Hey Rushgoober! At least you have a keen sense to love the Seventies stuff! It has to be the best! I think the late Sixties, the whole decade of the Seventies and early Eighties are the APEX OF MUSIC! I love the fact that some DEAD HEADS try and collect everything! It makes perfect sense why I am a RUSH HEAD! I try to collect it all!!! I know I don't, but I am so damn close. Some people have a library of books. My library is music. I don't burn either. I am a cd dinosaur. I love the art work and the whole real enchilada when I hold it in my hand. Even my wife loves her Ipod. Even my 69 year old father has an Ipod. NOT ME! The compact disc will be obsolete in my lifetime, yet I will hold on the past. Just like holding on to RUSH until my dying day. If I live long I will be listening to YYZ when I am in my nineties! Sorry to go off topic! I will keep "American Beauty" in my cd collection! I saw "Reality" instead of "Beauty." Excellent! "Clutching at Straws" Rushgoober!! Some people have a library of books. My library is music. Collecting all the Dead shows is an insane proposition, as they did over 5,000 concerts. Even for those that do try and that ARE successful (although I have to imagine there are at least a handful of shows, especially the real early ones that aren't available) couldn't possibly absorb all of it.
