MLB 2006 Season

Barney, it's time to unpin Hot Stove...

Sunday, April 2 is Opening Night. The White Sox will begin their title defense at home against the Cleveland Indians. Mark Buehrle will start for the Sox, and CC Sabathia will start for the Tribe. This should be an interesting division race all year long. It's good to see this rivalry renewed at last. The AL Central was abysmal for a long time.

Just one little thing, Raider. Chicago can't play Milwaukee in the first round, because they're in the same division.

And an A's manager can't be Manager of the Year, because Billy Beane is the one calling all the shots.

I'll offer my predictions, in the same format done by Raider:

AL Cy young - Santana (but Halladay will closely contend)

AL MVP - Ortiz (They owe him after last year)

AL Rookie of the year - Brian Anderson (White Sox; He's gotta be good if they traded away Rowand)

AL Manager of the year - Jim Leyland (but this is a crapshoot)

Playoffs

AL West - Oakland

AL Central - White Sox

AL East - Yankees (but pitching will keep them from running away with it)

AL WC - Cleveland (But oh it's gonna be close)

NL Cy young - Peavy (It's time)

NL MVP - Pujols (Only injury will prevent this)

NL Rookie of the year - Prince Fielder (Matt Cain could make it interesting)

NL Manager of the year - Ned Yost (It will be clear to all in the end)

Playoffs

NL West - Who cares? (San Diego since I have to pick one)

NL Central - St. Louis

NL East - Atlanta (We gotta keep saying it until we're wrong)

NL WC - Milwaukee Brewers

NL Playoffs:

St. Louis over Atlanta

Milwaukee over San Diego

St. Louis over Milwaukee

AL Playoffs:

White Sox over Yankees

Oakland over Cleveland

White Sox over Oakland (Grinderball vs. Moneyball will be close, though)

World Series

White Sox over St. Louis (the NL sacrificial lamb this year)

MLB's worst record - Kansas City Royals (The rest of the division got better, they did not.)

First managers to get fired: Dusty Baker (NL); Buddy Bell, KC (AL)

Comeback players: Sidney Ponson (NL); Aaron Boone (AL)

Prediction:
My PADRES will become only the second team in history to win their division with a losing record -

I think they'll win more than 81 games. Peavy is healthy now, with a great shot at the Cy Young, and Chris Young was a good pickup, I thought. Adam Eaton was way overrated, with or without that injury. An ERA over 4 in that pitcher's park is not that exciting. Consider that Young had stats no worse than Eaton's, in that bandbox in Arlington no less.

Jimmy Rollins finished last season hitting safely in 36 consecutive games. Will he break DiMaggio's record?

I'm betting against it.

Rollins doubled in the 8th ininng today so his streak is now 37...

Marlins and Astros pitching duel: D-Train leaves with a no-desicion as Marlins lose on wild pitch by Braves reject Joe Borowski.

Read all about it here. Marlins

D-Train threw 107 pitches in 5 innings. That's pretty uncharacteristic for him, though he certainly was effective.

Nice park. Looks like it utilizes many of the features of the new parks. The open area beyond the outfield kind of reminds me of what has been done with Camden Yards and Ameriquest Field (The Ballpark in Arlington). The front entrance architecture reminds me a bit of Coors Field or Safeco, but the arches are more of a local flavor. Looks like that would be a great place to see a game. Gotta be better than the old cookie cutter design.

It was a great run. I give him credit.

Getting to the Yankee Clipper's number gains more appreciation once again. This is one of the most hallowed records in baseball. I think the guy with the best chance of breaking the record is Ichiro, but the chance of anybody getting there at all is so remote.
