I shoot in RAW mode with my Canon 30D and the Pictures come out awesome - but when i convert them to JPEG to post they lose a lot of clarity and contrast - Any suggestions on software or how to do it? I am using Photoshop 7.0

I've only recently started playing around with RAW.

RAW is an artform itself. You really have to know how handle the adjustments when you are processing RAW. IF you don't the photos just don't turn out.

I try to save the JPG to the highest quality, for one. I believe in CS2 there's some auto-white balance, then from there you can change the settings. I'll have a look at it further tomorrow when I have some time.

ACDSEE has RAW processing too. I haven't played around with it much though.

Barney, I shoot IN THE RAW. It sometimes makes my subjects uncomfortable and I don't get the desired facial expressions I'm looking for. Do you have any advice for me here? Thanks.

You need a better mounting point.

Convert it from raw to a tif, edit it at a high resolution, then when all is edited, reduce the image size to web display, and save it as a high end jpeg.

Hope that helps

I'm looking into getting a camera for my daughter. I wanted to get her the Nikon Cool pix L12, but for some odd reason the stores around here are no longer selling it.

So I am asking for some advice on a camera to get that she can grow with, it's her first camera so it would be best if it was easy to use and not cost a fortune.

I have received conflicting advise on the MPs as well, saying 5MP is is fine, to don't go lower than 7MP. unsure.gif

Thanks for any help anyone can offer! smile.gif

I don't know much about cameras, but I had a Kodak camera with 5 MPs, which was pretty good for what I like (lots of scenery photos, some of people/events). However, the more MPs, the larger the file size. You'd need to get an external card to store all the pics (you'll probably need one anyway; most cameras' internal memory is pretty weak). I like how the 5 MP pics came out. Here's one I took at Marcy Dam in the Adirondack's. I thought it came out ok (but, then again, I know little about cameras/picture taking):

Pretty cool looking sunset; I like how the sun reflects on the lake:

Here, try this:

My Kodak Gallery

That might work. All those pictures were taken with a 5 MP camera, the Kodak V530. Some of the pictures are ok, some are not.

Tomorrow I will be buying a Nikon D5100 with a Nikkor 18-55mm lens, and a Nikkor 55-300mm lens. I already bought two books from Amazon that cover the camera well beyond the owners manual that comes with the camera. I'm not really looking for advice on what to buy, but I want to open this thread back up in case I have questions about how to maximize what I can do with this camera. I'm really looking forward to getting out and taking pictures.
