good post - I've never seen that before

But the guitar players were terrible - all of them ... And Bruce Dickinson was schooled by Ian Gillan

I've seen it way back when on TV, but totally forgot about it. Thanks for posting.

Cool; knew of the song, but never saw the video for it. Not quite the same thing, but reminds me of another Alex appearance (with a better solo!)

Used to have this on vhs ages ago, long gone.Alex mentioned in a guitar mag at the time that he held back on his guitar part because of all the heavy guitar artillarey at hand.Still have the cd with Spirit of Radio representing Rush.

I think the sign of a good musician is knowing when to hold back...and yes, Alex's ear for melody makes him superior

As if I weren't already in the throes of a Deep Purple revival. I remember having Shades of Deep Purple in my dorm room in 1968. I even got the date right! Come to think of if, the rest of my dorm hall must have hated my taste in music....

Typical Alex, putting the song before himself!

Bryan was huge in those days as a popular rocker, further raised profile of the cause

The two most imaginative rock guitarists ever in action together there, Al & Brian May

They needed someone with "star power" to get folks to watch the video.

True.

They had guitarists, singers, musicians...

Why not add Bryan Adams in there for something different :P

To be fair, Bryan Adams did "Summer of 69". I admire him for that. I can barely make it through 20 minutes of 69. Much less a full summer!

From the book 'Guitar World Presents Dear Guitar Hero: The World's Most Celebrated Guitarists Answer Their Fans' Most Burning Questions'

Dear Guitar Hero - Alex Lifeson of RUSH

Q: As a Canadian, could you publicly apologize to America for letting Bryan Adams come here?

Bryan Adams might not be what I want to put on, but he's a pop singer with a great voice and great guitar tone. Plus, he's done more for Canada than RUSH have, because he works all the time. I envy him for that. And now he's become a very successful photographer.

Here's the accompanying article that I submitted awhile back, which can be viewed here.

Ed Bickert has retired apparently according to this article here but Liona and Rik are still performing.

As far as Alex goes, to know whether he's still performing or not, all the fans come on here or read the news at the Rushisaband, Cygnus X-1, and Power Windows websites.
