Vapor Trails vs St. Anger

I remember listening to both albums for the first time and when they first started i went 'Ooh.this is nice and heavy'.Three or four 'songs?' in

i was hoping this racket would finish.Neil Young can make a more tuneful noise when he gets out of it(Arc).Where were the guitar solos, acoustic

guitars, ballads and ,err,no keyboards(could have been a good thing)? There was no light or shade on both albums.True the production sucked on

VT but i can't believe that the band would have let this be released if they didn't believe in it.I read interviews with Alex in guitar magazines at the time

and he was proud of the grungy,no solos(almost) sound he got.And for the first time i couldn't get into Neil's lyrics.St Anger was just Hetfield muscling

in with his angst with an energizer battery powered monkey bashing on tin cans,a crab walking bass player and lead guitarist left twiddling his thumbs.

In time i began finding things on both albums and certain tracks on VT are among my favourites, especially on the remaster. But i still can't

listen to both albums all the way through.Freeze is probably the worst song ever by Rush.Just my rant.

And for the first time i couldn't get into Neil's lyrics.

I completely understand the musical criticism in your post, but this part absolutely floors me. I'm hard pressed to name an album where Neil did a better job relating the human condition with such honesty and emotion.

Sorry i meant initially they were hard to get into probably because of all the racket going on.I love a lot of the lyrics on VT now

I remember that a lot of the complaints about that album was due to the fact that some songs didn't have any sort of distinct melody where you can hum it and say "oh yeah, I know that song!". Granted, people were also saying similar things about CA, but I hear a lot more distinctive melody in that one than in VT, especially Freeze.

Maybe you should actually listen to it before you make judgments on it. Write a review in your thread

I definitely see a connection between the two albums though. Two early 2000's releases by bands after a break. They both featured no guitar solos and were panned by their fans. Both are considered one of the worst albums by each band.

But I do actually like Vapor Trails, unlike St Anger

Fraroc, Union has the right way of looking at this. Instead of pitting the two albums against each other -- asking people on a Rush board to choose between a Rush album and a Metallica album that most Metallica fans hate -- maybe start a discussion about the interesting connection between the two, as Union did above.

It's like confusing Mike Varney with Mark Varney.

HAHAHAHA!!

Mike Varney is a good friend of mine!! We would always see each other in used cd stores! Hunting down the rare shit that no one cares about! Classic.

Mike is a great guy.

Vapor Anus SUCKS!

VT is very melodic. It sure has a lot of emphasis on rhythmic, heavy riffs, but the melody is definitely out there (How It Is, Ghost Driver, Sweet Miracle and basically the rest of the album).

A million chainsaws buzzing down the rainforest has more melody than "Vapor Trails!" SNAIL TRAILS GLISTEN MORE THAN THIS UNLISTENABLE SHITE!

Def Leppard's HYSTERIA is MELODY.

Gotcha. The loudness is a distraction...or can be.

Well duck, I know the anuses in the porn that you watch can swallow an entire head of cabbage but they're exceptions to the rule. I was referring to the standard run of the mill anus.

By the breadth of the knowledge he continues to demonstrate, he's either a mathemagician, sciencetologist, or a dabbler in the proctological arts.

And I salute that breadth.
