  1. QUOTE (metaldad @ Feb 16 2011, 09:36 AM) In other words 'We have no idea if this will work so we don't want to say who it is if he is not here next week. We are aware that Portnoy is doing his 3 album since we would Not let him back in the band and we are shitting a brick . We really hope this does not come back to bite us in the ass so we will just feel him out for another 2 years " JLB This is looking more and more likely... Honestly, this is the first DT album in awhile that we are not privy to ANY info regarding the recording (except that according to JP's twitter, it's going amazingly). It's kind of exciting and really building my anticipation of the new album. I really couldn't care less who the drummer is, MP is DT's drummer and the new guy will always be a temp IMO. I'm sure he'll kick ass, whoever he is though. It's funny, I was just watching the Chaos In Motion DVD for the first time in years, and it was amazing how non-existent any (visible) friction was between the members. Just a few years later the whole thing turned to shit.
  2. QUOTE (Show Don't Tell @ Feb 13 2011, 11:11 AM) So wait. What's the latest rumour in terms of the new drummer? I heard a while back it might be Bobby Jarzombek, and then later it was thought to be Marco Minnemann. Now I'm hearing that it's... not. Mike Mangini is the newest suspect. People are saying that he canceled all of his classes at Berklee for this semester, but it could just be a bad grapevine
  3. There's no way Portnoy is coming back. Besides making thinly veiled derogatory comments on his site about the other members (not to just be inflammatory, but in response to a question), he seems WAY too excited about his new projects with the Morses and Russell Allen, and the mystery 3rd project to go back to being shackled in DT. Plus his reasons for leaving were the fact that he WANTED a long break from the band. I think they need a few years apart to let the bad feelings die off and the nostalgia to set in before Portnoy rejoins.
  4. VICTORIA LEGRAND Of the dream pop duo, Beach House. Such an expressive, smoky voice...she actually reminds me of Jon Anderson in the early 70's a bit if you can stretch your imagination. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yK_IyLEo6o4&feature=related
  5. It's gotta be Gavin Harrison. The dude can do anything, and he's incredibly musical as well. The middle of What Happens Now? by Porcupine Tree is totally off-the-charts inspiring.
  6. Good start. I'd put The Weapon higher, but the other two I absolutely agree with
  7. The Uplift Mofo Party Plan by the Red Hot Chili Peppers is a severely underrated album in their catalog. It might be their best actually, yet no one really knows about it since BSSM, Californication, and SA overshadow all their other music. One Hot Minute is pretty awesome too
  8. I think I'm the only person on Earth who vastly prefers Pablo Honey and The Bends to all their other work.
  9. QUOTE (micgtr71 @ Jan 8 2011, 11:35 AM) QUOTE (RodrigoAltaf @ Jan 4 2011, 09:57 AM) QUOTE (metaldad @ Jan 4 2011, 09:40 AM) Portnoy started a new band with Steve Morse and Neal Morse. This should be a good one It should be awesome, I agree...but tstill, it has the "project" feel, and it's not really a proper band. I would imagine Portnoy would pursuit something like starting a new band, apart from all the side projects he always did. We'll wait and see. I will be interested in seeing this as well. He's been giving daily updates of the writing/recording session in one of the threads on his website. It sounds pretty interesting and he sounds really excited about it.
  10. QUOTE (Good, bad, andrush @ Jan 8 2011, 12:07 AM) Can somebody list me the two best songs from each of their albums? I like Octavarium (if that's how you spell it), and just about everything I've heard from them, especially Forsaken...but I'd like to get into them after I go through the PT discography. I'll give it a go! Their strongest work is easily their first couple of albums up until 6 Degrees (not including WDADU) but since you like Octavarium and Forsaken you might be more into their later stuff. Whereas I love every single song from WDADU to Six Degrees, they sort of dropped in quality at Train Of Thought IMO so my choices from then on might be weird to a typical DT fan When Dream & Day Unite - The Killing Hand, Ytsejam Images & Words - Metropolis, Learning To Live Awake - Voices, Scarred (Space Dye Vest is awesome as well but more of a Kevin Moore song than an actual DT song) Falling Into Infinity - Lines In The Sand, Trial Of Tears Scenes From A Memory - Finally Free, Beyond This Life Six Degrees... - Disappear, About To Crash (Reprise) Train Of Thought - In The Name Of God, Vacant Octavarium - Octavarium, Panic Attack Systematic Chaos - The Dark Eternal Night, Prophets Of War Black Clouds & Silver Linings - Wither, The Shattered Fortress
  11. Keep going! I'm curious. I feel the same way about a lot of these middle songs. There's nothing really wrong with a lot of the later period songs, but there's nothing that stands out either. On VT alone, I can maybe pick out only a few hair-raising moments, but nothing is truly bad either. Except for Stars Look Down, that song just sucks
  12. What's interesting is that you have what are probably my two least favorite FK cds (Adam & Eve is their worst), so you're going to REALLY love when you start getting their immense back catalog. Stardust We Are, Retropolis, Unfold The Future, and Flower Power are unstoppable. The title track to SWA is utterly brilliant
  13. I think Jordan Rudess is still in China (according to his Twitter), so I imagine the studio work JP referred to is just himself and maybe JM doing pre-production/guitar settings.
  14. QUOTE (the masked drummer @ Dec 31 2010, 10:05 AM) I met Myung twice and he's so shy he makes peart look like an extrovert. He utters very few words and usually keeps his head down to avoid making eye contact. And while I understand Peart's shyness and his behavior because of it, I DO NOT understand why Myung would refuse to be in the same room as the band unless he was forced to. That's a bit ... strange if you ask me... This is taken WAY out of context. I have an obscure Dream Theater rehearsal video from 1987 I obtained in my obsessive DT fan heydey. I don't think they even were named DT yet, they were still Majesty and it was obviously shot by a close friend of the band at that time. There is a scene when the band is all goofing off in one room and John Myung is by himself practicing in another room. This is NOT new behavior for JM, he's been like this all throughout the band's history. I think MP was looking for more of a party after every show atmosphere (which I absolutely DO NOT blame him for...I've been in bands that go our separate ways after shows and it just sucks after awhile...too businesslike) and DT is just not that band anymore. Thus the reason his tenure with A7X is criticized at being the catalyst that made him leave...it was just more fun. I think this whole situation is overhyped. A guy wants to date other women after being married to the same chick for 25 years. He cheats on her with a new chick, and the new chick dumps him. He panics and tries to get back with the wife but she's moved on. Guy then has to move on as well. It's just human nature with a woman and band being interchanged.
  15. Great series. This and OZ were two of my early favorites on HBO. I'm going to have to check these out from my library and rewatch them again
  16. Good band. My favorite songs are Hallowed Be Thy Name, These Colours Don't Run, Alexander The Great, and When The Wild Wind Blows.
  17. IMMORTAL Fantastic band, with enough Nordic imagery to make Tolkien jealous. Not to mention the cheesiest poses in black metal history. Beyond The North Waves Withstand The Fall Of Time
  18. I just started watching this show after hearing about it for years and years. I was able to check out both season from my library and I just finished season 1. HOLY SHIT!! What an awesome show!! I've always been a big David Lynch fan, and it's cool to see his style of film converted into a television series. Sucks it only lasted two seasons. Anyone love this show as well?
  19. Dear Prudence Something Here Comes The Sun Golden Slumbers Carry That Weight She's So Heavy Let It Be I'm Only Sleeping Glass Onion Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey
  20. QUOTE (ColdFireYYZ @ Dec 7 2010, 03:01 PM) I have a feeling that Mike will return for the High Voltage festival and the tour next year. I just can't picture him not coming back. I don't. Once the shock wears off from ending an intense 25 year relationship, he's probably going to wind up enjoying not being 'tied down' to a band like that anymore. He's got a solid career, at the height of his popularity, with tons of options...why go back to the ol' ball and chain so to speak? I have a feeling it's going to take many years before nostalgia kicks in and he rejoins them on good terms again.
  21. QUOTE (thesweetscience @ Dec 5 2010, 09:53 PM) Weeds, The Big C and Californication are all great shows on Showtime. I've just gotten into Californication in the past week. EXCELLENT SHOW!! Probably my new favorite television character in Hank Moody This last Dexter was awesome. I'm really digging this season now that it's an episode away from being over. It's kind of how season 3 was a bit of a breather before the intense season 4. Maybe this season is a bit of a breather before the next season, which is looking to be pivotal to wrapping up the series. I'm guessing that Lumen will be the one to get caught for the murders of all the rapists, and her character will be written out of the series that way, but not without Dexter being scrutinized for his involvement with her. Quinn will perhaps get fingered for Liddy's death, and have to get Deb on his side, however briefly enough, to plant the seeds of Dexter's true self into her head.
  22. I love those songs, but none of them please. They've been done to death I'd nut for any of these: Grand Designs The Enemy Within Cut To The Chase
  23. Dexter True Blood Burn Notice
  24. This band needs some life infused into it. I love Jon and miss his presence dearly, but some new blood might push the other guys into upping their game. Same situation as Dream Theater actually...I'm excited to see what both bands do
  25. QUOTE (Steevo @ Nov 23 2010, 09:10 PM) Got 'The Ladder' on the way, it's gonna be a fresh listen. I'm guessing it will be in the same ballpark as 'Magnification', just an average 3-star collection (patchy but still worthwhile). Hope I'm wrong. Anyone care to put their spin on this one? The Ladder is pretty cool. It has your typical sappy Jon Anderson shit, but even those songs are still pretty good (If Only You Knew and It Will Be A Good Day). New Language and Homeworld are great longer tracks. There's not really any "bad" songs on here. Every one has some kind of redeeming quality (then again, it needs to be REALLY crappy for me to say outright I think something sucks) Honestly, after the dire Open Your Eyes and overly nostalgic feel of Keys To Ascension, this album feels pretty fresh and the band sounds very inspired and it shows in the material. Lightning Strikes, To Be Alive, and Face To Face are energetic and catchy, Finally and The Messenger are a little more adventurous, and the album ends on a softer note in Nine Voices. Good album. Enjoy it.
