  1. QUOTE (UltimoGuitarist @ Jul 9 2012, 03:05 PM) Tabs are the hack musicians learning tool. Learn by ear like a real player. Is this you?
  2. Look out goose. Maverick is dangerous. He's gonna get you killed. Turn and burn!
  3. With his turning a one syllable into two this is all I can picture anymore. http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e372/biffmalibu01012/Rush%20forum/Boltfrombaloo.jpg
  4. I don't hate it or anything. It's just too repetitive for my tastes. It could have been a four minute song instead of seven. It's like a movie that goes twenty minutes too long, but still better than 99% of crap that comes out today.
  5. Fanboys. Can't help it I love that movie.

I can't speak for their accuracy, but I wrote out all 4 of those bass tabs, so I'd like to think they're accurate, haha. First a lot of people are going to be happy you took the time to make these tabs. I just had a look at the Garden and while the chorus looks correct the verse is really just F F7 Bbsus2. I had it wrong and way more complicated when I first started picking it out too.

QUOTE (psionic11 @ Jun 30 2012, 12:59 AM) QUOTE (hunter @ Jun 29 2012, 07:21 PM) I know I'll get flamed for this but, I love it because Alex left us a place to solo. http://www.greatfallingoftheleaves.com/Garden_solo.mp3 Woot, very nice. Impressive. Evocative and in key, if not so much of the sonic variation Alex typically has (pinches and bends, bridge and neck tonalities within one solo). Constructive criticism? A bit fewer notes, more space, especially after a particularly evocative phrase, to let it sink in for the listener, to let them revel in the feeling for a few more milliseconds before blowing them away with yet another strong phrase. Otherwise, great blend. Thank you. Correction: there were quite a few bendy moments in there. And a pinched harmonic. And even more in keeping with the Lerxst tradition, you ended with a pre-defined arpeggio theme that fades back into serving the song. Nice. Thanks. I agree with the fewer notes. I tend to put a lead there whenever I play along with the track and change it up every time. This wasn't "written" but more a one off and comes from how I was feeling it at that moment. I think it needs a little more delay and many things to change if it were at all serious. But it's just for fun so...
  8. QUOTE (psionic11 @ Jun 29 2012, 10:29 PM)QUOTE (hunter @ Jun 28 2012, 02:25 PM) I find his playing great. Lots of arpeggios and suspended chords. All of it may not be as flashy as some of his past work but it's emotive. As a musician you want people to react to your music emotionally. Sadly a lot of guitarists try to get people, specifically other musicians , to react with envy by trying to play 900 MPH. I'm glad Alex doesn't feel the need for that. Lerxst and suspended arpeggios describe the same rippling leaves in a forest. So many forest, so many trees, so many perspectives for so many moments. Emotion almost always triumphs technique, with very few exceptions: Still, the actual *sound* plays a huge role, and the clarity and brilliance of old school Lerxst still outshines CA Lerxst, yes? So funny you would choose that clip. In college music classes I did a rock version of that, but, I guess, who hasn't right? And yes the past Alex certainly took more opportunities to solo and many were more evocative than CA works. ESL La Villa will always be a favorite along with Emotion Detector and Analog Kid etc. etc. As for sound I've always been partial to the way the instruments sounded on MP. So hard to nail that tone. As an aside I find it ironic that people who say it's easy to play Alex's parts often play them wrong. Just check you tube. I'm certainly guilty of it. Like you said what sounds simple can be deceptively difficult to play. And yes, you can learn the parts and play them, but that is entirely different than writing them.

  10. I'll always remember him trying to get across the rice paper without tearing it.
  11. QUOTE (They Bow Defeated @ Jun 29 2012, 08:58 AM)QUOTE (trenken @ Jun 29 2012, 06:43 AM)On this album they sound like regular stock rock riffs. Nothing really iconic sounding or anything like that. Most of it just sounds jammed out to me and not really slaved over to write amazing riffs. There is not a single part on this album that sounds cool and iconic like 1:35 of Jacobs Ladder. He just doesnt write like that anymore, and it makes me look at this album like it's almost not even Rush, at least not the Rush I loved. They used to sound very unique, Alex played a big role in that, and now they sound kind of like any other rock band out there. The playing itself is fine. I dont need him to be John Petrucci, Alex never was that technical, but I would like some more parts that sound like he didnt just jam them out for 5 minutes then go take a nap. Yeah, it's too bad the legendary Alex Lifeson just can't come up with innovative guitar parts like trenken on his album that nobody's actually heard. QUOTE (trenken @ Jun 3 2012, 07:06 PM)Ive been slaving away writing and album myself for the last 3 years. Doing it all myself on the Mac in Logic, and Ive made it a serious focus not to use power chords if I didnt need to. I only really use them on melodic choruses sometimes, or some here and there in other parts but trying to avoid them because when I use them they sound so generic. Actually Im really loving using dissonant chords in some of the heavier songs because its so different sounding, something Alex doesnt do for some reason. And also trying to do interesting things with the guitar in the verses, not playing chords, but notes, effects, etc... Maybe if Trenken finished some of those sentences with "...to my ear." Just because it doesn't sound cool or iconic to you doesn't mean it isn't to others. And I know how difficult it is to write and record an album (see my sig) so take your time and good luck with it. We didn't set out with any kind of rules about what kind of chords we would use we just tried to write for the song. Sometimes we were successful, to our ear anyway, and sometimes not. Looking forward to hearing yours though Trenken.
  12. I'm not sure who I would pick for protagonist. The art work that first appeared on the net here http://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/images/albums/clockwork-angels-5-s.jpg Shows what looks to be a caucasian hand for him, but in my CD booklet it's clearly an african-american hand. So Tom Hanks or Denzel?

  15. I get a late 60's early 70's vibe from the song. Maybe that's why I like it. A great Rush tune? Nah. But a good tune? Yeah.
  16. QUOTE (JohnnyBlaze @ Jun 27 2012, 01:24 AM) QUOTE (goose @ Jun 27 2012, 02:59 PM) Apocalypse Now Redux! I have to admit, Apocolypse Now (Redux or not) and Blade Runner are 2 flicks that I think are really good but make me sleepy as hell. I feel the same way.

QUOTE (lonelymoon @ Jun 26 2012, 02:11 PM) I like the violin. And I like Alex's rip off of Kurt Cobain's "All Apologies" that he plays under the violin part. (this is just before the acoustic chords, for those of you with limited familiarity with the song) Can you give a time for this. Is this at the very beginning? Because there is no guitar there. That is Geddy on the bass.
  18. Here's another from a different song. Let's see who gets it? http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e372/biffmalibu01012/Rush%20forum/Boltfrombaloo.jpg

  21. QUOTE (Sonatine @ Jun 24 2012, 10:55 PM) "Bullitt" and Steve McQueen The streets of San Francisco + the Mustang + the Dodge Charger + the lean music + the tight editing + McQueen = 10 minutes of pure cinematic brilliance at its most coolest The same VW beetle in almost every shot. Love that chase though.
