  1. QUOTE (deslock @ Apr 13 2007, 04:23 PM) Neil has been a moderate, liberal-leaning libertarian agnostic/atheist for decades. He's also been directly critical of the religious right many times. amalignantfarcry, your statement, "Deep inside I get the feeling he holds such great anger towards a higher power for ripping his wife and child from him" doesn't make any sense as Peart has never believed in any higher power to get angry at (at least for as long as he's been with Rush). It's obvious from his lyrics, books, articles, and interviews. I also don't understand your statement that Fear has become a big issue with Neil. It's a topic he's touched on many times over the decades. As far your assertion that Neil is "starting to rail on like a liberal", you can go back to Counterparts and find lyrics that advocate social equality for women and gays (Nobody's Hero, Alien Shore). Go back to Presto and P/G for lyrics about environmental problems (Red Tide, DEW). Go back to Power Windows for lyrics against hunger, war, and nationalism (Territories). That he's also written lyrics promoting individualism (Roll the Bones, Tom Sawyer, Freewill, The Trees, etc) doesn't change that he leans liberal on some issues. And many of those same songs about individualism also promoted atheism/agnostism... given who his influences were (like Ayn Rand), this shouldn't be surprising. Part of the argument here may be more about the definition of liberal and libertarian and whether or not those terms conflict. For the purposes of this discussion, I'll refer to liberal in the commonly used sense (as opposed to one of the traditional definitions of embracing change). Some conservatives say that liberal and libertarian are opposites and it's true that several liberal positions are associated with authoritarianism (such as gun control, affirmative action, and economic regulations). However, on many topics liberalism is closer to libertarianism, especially when it comes to social issues. For example: I'm sure all of us will agree that anyone under the influence of drugs (alcohol, pot, etc) should never be in positions where they could cause harm (driver, air traffic controller, operator of machinery, etc) but it's both liberal and libertarian to believe that what drugs people do on their own time is not the government's business. It's both liberal and libertarian to believe that it isn't the government's place to regulate birth control or gay marriage/civil unions. It's both liberal and libertarian to believe that children should not be indoctrinated into religion by public schools and that religion should be a personal decision. There are obviously other topics where people of many ideologies cross-over (abortion, military spending, foreign policy), but that's another topic. I feel like a dumbass.
  2. QUOTE (amalignantfarcry @ Apr 13 2007, 03:40 PM) I must have listened to Far Cry about 600 times by now and have not heard a single key in there. Spindrift on the other hand...sounds hauntingly beautiful and the 30 seconds of it showed me some damn fine music. Ditto MalNar. Far Cry on the other hand never did anything for me and I was struggling to like it. wow after 600 times I think its safe to say Far Cry will not grow on you. I really like it alot but hope it's not the best track on the record.
  3. I'm still waiting for Mastereggcream to let us know how Snakes and Arrows holds up next to the entire Rush discography.
  4. great review. im a little concerned that he thinks MalNar is the best of the instrumentals.

And yet that's one of my fave Zeppelin albums. In the end, I believe the band were not happy either. There had been some kind of miscommunication much like what happened with Caress of Steel and a major mistake was made. I've never heard the band wasn't happy. Are you guys old enough to have owned Zep III on vinyl, where the cover actually had the spinning wheel in it? I thought it was great...though the best Zep cover is II. this is the cover art i was never too fond of: http://www.cdpoint.com.br/imagens/075678252822.jpg You have to admit that the rest of the Counterparts packaging is cool though... Absolutely, the rest of the CP packaging is cool. I wish they would have used the hare sitting on top of the tortoise as the cover.

  7. QUOTE (The Owl @ Apr 8 2007, 11:27 AM) Now that the change has been made its now.... http://products.priceclash.co.uk/images/nodrop/220/B000026A08/music/anderson-bruford-wakeman-howe.jpg vs. http://home.q04.itscom.net/hiropon/meddle.jpg vs. http://www.thebestlinks.com/images/6/6c/Rush_Hemispheres.jpg i voted storm, but it is very close. These are the 3 best cover art artists in the music business but clearly Meddle isnt your favorite Floyd cover is it? That would have no be Animals IMHO.
  8. well now that Roger Dean has been added, he gets my vote. Here is one of my favorite Dean covers. It's the import version of Gentle Giant's "Octopus". Great album. http://www.expose.org/GaryGreen/octopus_eu.jpg

  13. QUOTE (goose @ Jan 3 2007, 04:11 PM) QUOTE (Roddy @ Jan 1 2007, 04:25 AM) From the mid-80s, this is probably what you might call a 'cult classic'. Starring Jon Voight (big call, I know, but probably a career best performance), Eric Roberts and an extremely un-glamorous Rebecca De Mornay. No special effects, crashes, explosions, gunplay or anything of the like whatsoever, but an utterly absorbing action/human drama film nonetheless. About as gritty as Hollywood gets. It even has an existentialist side as well! Amazing movie. Wadda ya think? I give it 9.5/10, one of my all time favourites.... A great movie! I remember it well, but haven't seen it in years. I'll have to track it down. I used to love this movie. Jon Voight and Eric Roberts trying to out-act each other! Great stuff.
  14. last wednesday's nikki and paulo episode was cool even though it didnt propel the story forward. it was almost like a twilight episode.
  15. QUOTE (Ya_Big_Tree @ Mar 29 2007, 11:13 AM) I am screening it tomorrow morning, I'll let you know if it kicks ass! (I'm sure it will) Here is the link to the new trailer for Grindhouse http://www.grindhousemovie.net/ waiting patiently for your review ....waiting..... waiting ...

    300 !

it was aight. the battle scenes were cool but got a little mind numbing. it was worth seeing on the big screen though.
  17. QUOTE (AeroZach2112 @ Mar 27 2007, 06:54 PM) The thread last night must've inspired you to do this. you're exactly right!
  18. I'm definitely a fan of the Roth era and feel they peaked with Fair Warning. It might not have been the biggest commercial success but it has the most raw power of any VH record. Weigh in.
  19. QUOTE (GhostGirl @ Mar 22 2007, 12:49 PM)Thanks, Bonzy, for sharing. It's so good to not feel alone. If you can find about anything about what Alabama offers that I haven't discovered, please...let me know. I've tried and tried to get answers. I am quite sure that Stephen will never marry...or even live independently. I'm trying to come to grips with what might happen if he gets too hard for me to control. It scares me, I won't lie. But, you're right...some days he is a joy, and I try to drink in those moments. He's not potty trained either...isn't THAT fun with a 7 year old? Anyway, thanks again for giving me someone to talk to who TRULY understands. With much ~M Hi GG, I'm fairly new to the board and just came across your post. You are definitely not alone as I've also been hit by the mack truck that is autism. My beautiful daughter Kara who is 3 and half is also suffering from this affliction. I've suspected it since she was 18 months and I've spent the last 2 years dealing with the grief, guilt, anger etc. I'm dealing with it much better these days. Only now has my wife been able to come to grips with the fact something is wrong. She's been in major denial but she has finally agreed to get her some therapies. Like you, I have wondered if Kara was brain injured by a vaccination. I want to look into chelation but my wife looks at me like I'm insane when i talk about mercury poisoning. It's been a nightmare. Fortunately Kara is pretty high functioning. She is very happy, starting to speak and is generally very bright. However, I also live with the fear that she will always be dependent on me and I worry what will happen once she outlives me. Anyway, hang in there! My thoughts are with you!
  20. Strangetude is one of my favorite prog rock records of all time. http://www.ozrictentacles.net/images/covers/cds/strangeitude.jpg
  21. QUOTE (Presto-digitation @ Mar 21 2007, 10:54 AM)Well, keep in mind too that SOMETHING has to get listed as "least favorite," so in lots of cases that might just be relative to other great songs on the album. For me (I voted for Peaceable Kingdom) there isn't a single weak song on the album...YES, including Sweet Miracle, which I love. So for me to even say PK as my choice is just having to name something. It's an incredibly even and consistent album to me. I thought "how it is" would easily take it. Endlessly Rocking!
  22. Much to my surprise, many people have listed "Out Of The Cradle" as they're least favorite of Vapor Trails. I'm a bit shocked as it is tied with Secret Touch as my favorite, especially the end fadout section when Neil is going off with those killer drum fills. It's a great album closer and makes the hair on the back of neck stand up. Speak up "Out Of The Cradle" fans!
