  1. QUOTE (Ya_Big_Tree @ Aug 14 2008, 11:12 AM) I saw this a few months ago at a private screening. It was alright but it is nothing like Spinal Tap. Spinal Tap is a Rockumentary about a fictious band and The Rocker is just a movie about a guy who used to be in a successful rock band in the 80s and he tries to relive his glory days with a new band. Its pretty funny but not really a great movie. I saw a promo clip and it reminded me exactly of spinal tap. Maybe i shouldn't have judged it on one scene...
  2. QUOTE (tick @ Aug 14 2008, 11:16 AM) QUOTE (PhilCastro @ Aug 14 2008, 11:31 AM) well. i listened to it like 4 times last night it kicked total ass!!!! I havent enjoyed an album that much in a long while. it felt great. There ya go ! Feel the magic, that is Dream Theater ! Tick's words are gospel. Listen, son: Your life will be enriched greatly with the magic we know as Dream Theater.
  3. QUOTE (PhilCastro @ Aug 13 2008, 06:56 PM) I just bought my first Dream Theater album today: "Scenes from a Memory" I cant wait to pop it in Tell us what you think! C'mon now...
  4. I might have to see this only because I'm a 40yo uncle who still plays metal drums. But, what a Spinal Tap ripoff, totally... The Rocker http://www.watchingtheoffice.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/TheRocker_Cinematical.jpg I swear I had 6/8/10 rototoms when i was a kid just like this dude, but I can't find a pic with them in it. But at least my kit was black like his. lol http://a159.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/35/l_abe8144f536769338b041591655fa4ae.jpg
  5. QUOTE (Marathonist @ Jul 28 2008, 09:04 AM) QUOTE (-D-RocK- @ Jul 28 2008, 08:35 AM) I heard Gigli was pretty bad, although I can't say for my self since I've never watched it nor ever plan to. LOL, you know better, don't you?? I haven't seen it either, for that reason. As far as movies-I-haven't-seen-but-won't-bother-with: Any film based on a popular 70's TV show. 'Starsky and Hutch', both 'Charlie's Angels' (yes, I know there's drool factor for guys there), etc. There's a reason these shows were cancelled, people. Now I did like the first X-Files movie and plan to see the new one. I'll agree, those movies totally sucked. I couldn't even make it through half of charlie's angels. But... The reason why Charlie's Angels and Starsky and Hutch TV shows were cancelled was because... um... All shows get cancelled sooner or later. That's a pretty weak argument imho. I mean, those shows were wildly popular when they were on TV.
  6. I just got into the "HD World", myself. I have a PS3 hooked up to a 42" LCD 1080P TV. The PS3 plays CD's, JPG data discs, DVD's, Blu-Ray DVD's and obviousy PS3 games. I also have digital cable, and that's super cool because you can play HD movies on demand, for "free". The Sony Blu-Ray player you posted looks great. However, I would recommend a PS3 player if it's similar in cost since you can keep it updated (firmware) via the internet (you can browse the internet and buy games with the PS3) even if you don't play a single game on it. IF it is cheaper than the PS3 and you want to save money that looks like a great player. Most importantly... HAVE FUN and welcome to the "HD World"!!!
  7. QUOTE (Lerxster @ Jul 31 2008, 05:42 PM) I'm still reading Landscapes by Kevin J. Anderson, and in one introduction to a story he writes: " 'Sea Wind' was inspired by the album and eponymous song 'Point of Know Return' (must have been a typo) by Kansas, one of my favorite progressive rock bands." I read that, then I thought of all the Kansas fans on this board, and then i thought well what have I really heard of Kansas except the few monster radio hits. Not much when I thought about it. So I clicked on this thread and read 1001's post Maestro quoted. It really sounds like I need to pick something up, like that 'the very best of kansas' cd. I'm making a mental note. Most people are oblivious to how many awesome songs they have. I was a non-believer until I saw them live in 1991 at a concert club (Harpo's) I play at every now and again. My advice is to get their DVD. It's a rock solid performance, with awesome production quality, and it features some of their greatest tunes. Highly recommended A+++++ http://bp3.blogger.com/_aeKED8wOQzw/Ru-uMBOm6zI/AAAAAAAAAvk/9JSBLHVc0Sw/s400/kansas_-_device_voice_drum_a.jpg
  8. Anyone going to the free Kansas show, this Friday at the Ren-Cen? It's only 4 blocks from me, so I'll be there for sure!
  9. Funny you posted this subject. I just finally went HD. I went and ordered furniture for my new place so I hit Best Buy and got a PS3 and a 42" 1080P Insignia TV. They took $100 off the TV for buying the PS3 so the total with cables, cleaning kit, surge protector, Spidy-3 Blu Ray was $1470 usd out the door. The TV is entry-level but I'm loving the 1080p resolution. There are lots of free HD movies on demand (720p) which is nice. We watched "into the blue" last night and you could see Jessica's booty in full detail as she was swimming (not that I noticed it or anything, my girlfriend brought it to my attention.) Here is my home theater. I have yet to setup my Klipsch center and rears, though... http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j74/kenamay/new_furniture/newfurniture012.jpg
  10. Yeah, it's not fair imho to compare jordan to Kevin or Derick, or any other keyboard player for that matter. He's in a class all his own. Fricken amazing, Just think: If Jordan would have been the original keyboardist, then James Labrie would be Kevin Labrie. (they didn't let him keep his name [real first name is kevin] since there was already a kevin and two johns)

Love "Awake." All that stuff is great to hear live too. "Caught in a Web" may be my favorite, but I'll listen tonight and make sure. "Awake" and "Images and Words" are the first things I offer people who want to try DT. I just found my awake disc. It's in my bedroom cd player right now. I remember going out on my lunch hour to get that disc at the nearest record shop. Then seeing them in concert for that tour noticing that Kevin Moore was gone. Boy has the internet made those days obsolete, huh??? Yeah, the 'net takes a lot of the guess-work out of things. Kevin apparently was asked to make an appearance at the "Score" taping and declined. He and Mike work together on the OSI stuff, so it can't be that he hates him or anything. I prefer Jordan, though some insist the band died when KM left. People also love "Space Dye Vest." It's a good song, but I don't consider it their best. How about you guys? Jordan is the man ! I prefer Rudess to Moore or Sherinian. Watching Jordan Rudess play the opening to Octavarium live was mind blowing. hell yeah! with the: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuum_%28instrument%29 http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e7/Continuum-Side-view.jpg/420px-Continuum-Side-view.jpg AMAZING!!!! I did like KM on the first tour though. He was awesome.

  13. QUOTE (GeddyRulz @ Jul 7 2008, 08:34 AM) QUOTE (blonde77th @ Jul 6 2008, 04:58 PM) Wow 10 yrs I pray she is OK All of us (quite sensibly) know that isn't likely, but I wonder whether her family thinks the same. From the flier I was handed on Saturday evening, it seems the family is acting as though Suzy is still alive... and not just that, but also able to freely enjoy Rush concerts and communicate online. Perhaps that's a necessary "trick of the mind" you play on yourself when your loved one is missing, to keep your sanity and keep you from thinking the worst. (The flier addresses Suzy directly at one point: "If you are reading this message, know that your family has not forgotten you. We are doing everything possible to bring you home safely. We love you." Apparently, the family thinks it possible that Suzy is alive and able to read their message.) On the other hand, perhaps the family has prepared themselves for the more likely scenario - that Suzanne was abducted, suffered, and is now dead somewhere. Her mother made a statement about "wanting closure." You usually don't use such words unless you're thinking of a still missing murder victim and/or an unpunished murderer. I would want to believe she was still alive if she was my sister, even though the chances are grim. After 24 hours of someone disappearing their chances of survival hit's rock bottom. It would be so awesome to find she's still alive and well.
  14. QUOTE (raygun47 @ Jun 19 2008, 02:10 PM) QUOTE (the masked drummer @ Jun 18 2008, 07:00 AM) QUOTE (raygun47 @ Jun 18 2008, 12:00 AM) Oh yeah...it'll be great. I saw them twice on the tour and they were at the top of their collective game. I flew from here (Indiana) to see them record "Score" in New York (RCMH), and I think they were as good or better on this tour. I look forward to a version of "Surrounded" from this year, because it was real, real good in Chicago. Also "Blind Faith." I don't think anything beats surrounded live from 1992-1993 with Kevin Moore. That was awesome! They played it every single time they came around back then! (actually whole images and words album). On the lists they actually called it "Surrounded'07," so it's a little revamped. I also really dig the Kevin Moore era. The difference live is definitely James' vocals. He's improved drastically. SO true. James, back in the day, was hit or miss. On a bad night it was torture, but a good night was awesome. No middle of the road. He has definitely spent lots of time studying his craft and doing exercises to improve. He's much more consistent these days.
  15. I wasn't impressed with the first one but I'll give this one a try. Thanks!
  16. QUOTE (Angua @ Jun 21 2008, 12:58 PM) I've just got home to find the sitting room in chaos with a drum kit (wasn't there when I went out) in the midst of the chaos. There was a sale on too good to miss... And they say we shop like it's an olympic sport! Yeah, but sales on drums are different, and men think about the big picture when we buy. Women are jealous about our sweet buying skills. I once went to guitar center to stock up on drum sticks and took advantage of their 65% off sale they had on this Premier kit so I snatched it up. I gigged at least 100 shows with that kit and then sold it for more than double what I paid for it. How can that be compared to clothes, shoes, & purses? What kind of resale value do purses have? I'm just asking. I'm just teasin' ladies. I know you are smart shoppers, too, and who are we to judge what you should buy or not?
  17. You're a twisted individual Tick, ya know that??
  18. QUOTE (GhostGirl @ Jun 23 2008, 10:35 AM) I listened to "Kansas" on the drive to work today. I love it - for a first album, it really sounds good to my non-musician ears. I especially enjoyed "Journey From Mariabronn." I just finally listened to the studio version for the first time when my brother surprisingly busted out the LP on vinyl a couple months ago. Sounds like a great album. I'll have to get the disc!
  19. QUOTE (Merely Space @ Jun 23 2008, 10:05 AM) I'm a sucker for Icarus - Bourne On Wings Of Steel. The version on "Two For The Show" is fantastic! If you like that version check out "device voice drum" on dvd. I think that's one of my favorite Kansas songs of all time. I am going to greatly miss robbie stanheardt this summer. He really completes the sound of Kansas.
  20. QUOTE (searchingforxanadu @ Jun 18 2008, 01:57 PM) QUOTE (Dances with the Moon @ Jun 18 2008, 12:43 AM) You have beautiful hair. No need to dye it. Thank you. I used to hate my hair but I love it now. The only reason I ever would dye it would be to make it brighter - it gets kinda dark in the wintertime - but I still don't think I would. I am way too emotional about my hair and I know I wouldn't be happy with anything but it naturally. lol. I hit this thread by accident, but I wanna tell you your hair is awesome. Anyone in their right mind would love it. It looks natural in color and is overall very pretty. It would be criminal to die it! OK, I'm outta here. That's my 2 cents.

  22. QUOTE (Choose/the/light @ Jun 16 2008, 07:18 PM) http://music.yahoo.com/read/news/61281870 I hope he gets what he deserves fanwise. What a completely egotistical jerk.
  23. QUOTE (raygun47 @ Jun 15 2008, 06:20 PM) QUOTE (the masked drummer @ Jun 14 2008, 10:51 AM) Is there really a DVD coming out or is it a hoax? You would think there would be an announcement at dreamtheater.net wouldn't you? hmmm Definitely. I've heard Mike talk about it a few times. It won't be a "show," but many shows from the tour...like 5 Years in a Livetime. He had planned on doing an "in-store" thing with Mikael Akerfeldt, but it didn't happen. He said he wanted to use it on the dvd. If you want the latest news...go to mikeportnoy.com forums. He does everything there first. That's great news! I like the complete concerts, but the 5YIAL concept with all those kewl little snippets and cameos of other bands, musicians, is great, too. Looking fwd to it!!!
  24. "Girls like me"? That's cuz I've got sweet skills, TD. Haven't you heard? Chicks dig guys with skills!

OK, Treeduck, you asked for it. You'd better not say what dicko said on next great american band about taking my mask off, either!
