  1. QUOTE (J2112YYZ @ Jun 24 2012, 09:24 AM) QUOTE (the masked drummer @ Jun 24 2012, 08:41 AM) I understand what you're saying, and maybe the promoters expected bigger crowds due to the popularity of king crimson, but i have seen dt dozens of times and have always felt a connection with mp. When he was with the band he knew how to stand up and bring the audience to their feet. That stimulus is now gone. Mangini is awesum, and I'm glad the dt camp is happy now, but the same place where I've seen dt play by themselves and pack it everytime and friday night there was not one person in my section besides my girlfriend. In fact the lower and upper bowl had about 10% capacity. How do you explain that? Every other time they were packed or at least at 90%. They need to surprise people with something epic on this next album. If they can't pull that off they might have to go back to playing 800 seat theaters like they did on the falling into infinity tour. Seriously. Something happened. Just because they have a world-class drummer, maybe even the best fit for dt right now doesn't mean they aren't missing something. In fact there were so few ppl at the theatre friday night, that they, for the first time, had to setup folding chairs on the main floor, to make it appear filled up down there. Wtf happened??? Edited: my gf corrected me. The upper and lower bowls were at around 5% capacity, according to her... Crimson isn't that popuar are they? They certainly aren't gonna help Dream Theater sell out any of the venues they're booked to play this tour. Especially when it comes to the larger ones. Maybe Portnoy leaving had more of an impact on concert attendance because if they're not filling up venues they always use to in the past, his leaving meant more than I thought it did. They do miss his stage presence but I think that playing wise, Mangini is a fine live replacement for him. I'm also starting to wonder if maybe the fanbase is losing interest in the band in genreal? Maybe Portnoy noticed that and that's why he wanted the band to take a break for a bit. It's great that Dream Theater has consistanly done album/tour every two years since Images & Words. But maybe they should take some time off and let the fans miss them for a bit. Then it's possible the crowds will be back again after a layoff from the band. Now that I think about it, them not doing the "evening with" shows anymore might be taking a toll on ticket sales to. It's something special that not many bands do and it set their shows apart from everyone else. Their music was made for that kind of show and I think a return to that next tour will help with ticket sales if they stay as bad as they've been for the rest of this tour. That's an interesting point about fans just losing interest in general. That could be. King crimson is not huge in usa but a pretty huge cult following. They've been around since 1969 and there have been over 1,500 albums released by all 18 past and present crimson members. Not super popular, but you'd think it would help dt fill up venues they filled up without an opener, eh? Although projekct crimson came out so strong, i think they were the wrong opener for this tour, which i never would have predicted. Kc were influences, major influences for dt, so im sure they were tickled ti have CP open. It's scary to think if dt were by themselves in terms of ticket sales.
  2. I wanted to say that mp did bring this on himself, and dt did the best they could to fill his shoes. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean they are going to succeed. A landmark album could fix this, i think. Another thing that might help is if dt would play to their audience. An occasional look into the audience would help. On friday they seemed to be in their own world. It could be that mp coached the guys on this stuff, but they need to have fun up there or their audience will disappear before their eyes. Bottom line: Portnoy f*cked dt. He took for granted a7x wanted him as their new drummer. He figured he would make some quick cash and bang some groupies, and dt now suffers. As for portnoy, he made his bed and now he must lay in it. It will be difficult for dt to ever trust him again. I believe they will only hire him back in an act of desperation or if mangini bails. We'll see. I'm still hoping for the next album to pick them back up again. I think they understand what needs to be done. Dt is in serious trouble.

  4. I guess what I'm saying is, can't you be contructive instead of making a blanket statement that it sucks? Maybe if we pointed out how the album could have been better, rush members might read this stuff and do another album. If i read enough negative posts like this about my band's new album, I'd probably say "f**k em. Let's just tour from now on, and charge ridiculous prices! Unappreciative bastards..."
  5. I hate negative threads. They gave us new material to chew on. Shut yer pie hole.
  6. Gene probably figures over the last 35 years, kiss has to have some wealthy fans who grew up, made fortunes, and still love kiss. The 3,500 price tag would make the fans who could afford it feel special, part of an elite group. The sad part is, you know damn well there are working stiffs who will charge the book on their credit cards and be in debt fir ten years paying for that pile of trees they call a book. Pfft. I guess the 300 million in gene's savings account isn't enough to retire on. In other news, ace frehley is doing a free concert this summer in my home town. If anyone wants to join me, you can crash at my pad. July 27, 1/4 mile from cobo hall (kiss alive) on the riverfront. Didn't mean to hijack thread, guys...
  7. QUOTE (Tick @ Jun 23 2012, 03:45 PM) QUOTE (Akron162 @ Jun 22 2012, 01:17 AM) QUOTE (The K Man @ Jun 21 2012, 11:39 PM) QUOTE (Akron162 @ Jun 21 2012, 11:04 PM) Right now is difficult to compare Portnoy with any other drummer. He's easily second only to our beloved Neil Peart. Is that a joke? Portnoy is great, but 2nd best in the world right now? No chance in hell. Gavin Harrison alone wipes the floor with him. Who? Gavin is outstanding. and as for the poll....PORTNOY!!!!! When Robert Fripp jams with you, you're not too shabby a drummer (Gavin doesn't suck!)
  8. Although MM can do stuff portnoy admitted he could never emulate, portnoy was their drummer since 1985, so of course i voted for him. I am interested to see what mm's second dt album sounds like. It could either cement him in or out of the band. So far, he doesn't fit quite right and dt f*cked up and got projekct crimson to open on this current tour. Believe it or not, their energy and bombast made dt look tame when i saw them last night in detroit. I left about 5 songs into dt's set. Their new lighting rig was so bright it gave me and my gf both a headache. I suppose that didn't help either.
  9. QUOTE (metaldad @ Jun 22 2012, 07:31 AM) QUOTE (the masked drummer @ Jun 22 2012, 07:29 AM) Got 2nd row lower bowl for tonight. $20/ticket on Cl Let us know the Attendance , i don't think they are doing that well . Have fun Alright, Thanks, metaldad. I have mixed emotions about the future of the band. In the beginning I didn't think MP was replaceable, but MM had me thinking everything was going to be fine. Now that I hear crowds are dwindling, I'd have to say people might now miss the "star" of the show, old Mikey. I'll let you guys know about the crowd. I'll try to take a pic or two also, like last time...

  11. QUOTE (metaldad @ Jun 18 2012, 08:43 AM) Nice , glad you had a good time. I don't know what the hell they are thinking booking some of these places. The show in NJ is prob gonna be very embarrassing for them . I am not really in the Portnoy Who? camp , he is missed, the shows are very safe now . I loved going to shows and not knowing what they would play, that ain't happening anymore . I think Mangini is a Great drummer but Mike is Mike and i hope he comes back someday . People have always said Portnoy was full of himself but has anyone ever read an interview with Mangini in the last year ? Full blown ego this guy has , some shit that has come out of his mouth never came out of Portnoys I know what you're sayin, man... I'm going to see them friday with a big group of people. I think this is about the first time they ever played the state theater (fillmore) on a friday. should be fun...
  12. QUOTE (Gompers @ Jun 15 2012, 09:16 AM) QUOTE (the masked drummer @ Jun 15 2012, 10:12 AM) I really like this track they have been playing on the radio. Anyone notice the main riff along with the drumbeat and fills are almost identical to Bastille Day's main riff? In fact, the splash cymbal fills, some are exactly what Neil played on atwas. Is this on purpose? Anyone disagree? Typo I believe it was intentionally. I thought I heard Ged mention there is a nod to Bastille Day. It's so obvious. Yes. That's pretty cool, actually. I have not bought the single. I am waiting for a cd release. Dang, ain't the u.s. release coming very soon? I like their sound and am super happy to hear their fresh stuff on rock stations!

  14. QUOTE (USB Connector @ Apr 16 2011, 08:14 PM) Someone posted this in the Rush section of the forum. I'd love to give them credit but my vision has been slightly blurred from the image without any warning. Ladies, for your consideration: Geddy, Alex and John in their underpants. Now that my eyes have recovered, the member who posted the pic is gelat. This would be new for anyone who has not yet seen the official video bio...
  15. I do like the dead sounding Slingerlands (I play old slingerlands so i'm biased, but) and the newer DW's, but the Tamas with Vibra-Fibe sound so sharp and... just awesome!
  16. YEah, I usually have one on the way to the show (along with herbal remedies) then one when i get there and that's it. Getting bombed is more appropriate for staying home and jamming a CD. IT's nice to remember highlights of a good concert, especially for the money. Tip: If you get bombed at home while watching a DVD it's like seeing it for the first time the next time you watch it!
  17. QUOTE (Powderfinger @ May 25 2012, 04:31 PM) Listening to this for the first time. My god, it's incredible! I MUST check that out!
  18. QUOTE (1-0-0-1-0-0-1 @ May 27 2012, 02:20 AM) QUOTE (D3strukt @ May 27 2012, 02:26 AM) Buddy Rich is in. I listened to Strike it Rich, Take 3 on Spotify. He blows Peart out of the water. I am now officially able to see this. I love his drumming. Buddy Rich blows EVERY drummer out of the water, regardless of genre, and regardless who one's "favorite" drummer might be. Buddy was simply the greatest drummer who ever lived. Absolutely. I saw buddy do a solo live in 1984 that left me speechless. Simply the fastest and most tactful drummer I've seen to date. Many people have approached me over the years saying "Keith Moon was the fastest drummer in the world" and I had to let them know Buddy made all the other drummers look like they're in slow motion. No joke. That cat was fast!!!

Looks like they are thinking "Don't mess with us, buster!". They are badass. Please take care of our guys, ladies!!! woot!
