  1. too many notes? I guess you can say that. All of that open chord strumming Alex does is not very pleasant sounding, especially on the title track and BU2B. There are a lot of moments where it just sounds like static. If he would have come up with better parts and the whole thing would've been mixed better, this would've been a much better album. For me, this album is better than some of their albums (T4E, Presto, Fly by Night etc.) but not as good as most (HYF, Vapor Trails, Counterparts etc.)
  2. Too much guitar
  3. The "Schon thing" sounds like an excuse. Break away... Not an excuse, but nearly the final straw. The last 12 years of lackluster material, poor directional decisions (w/over-reliance on 3rd parties) and endless DVDs/cashgrabs. Then the shock of realizing Alex' trademark sound is anothers'. Maybe its time for me to evolve and retire from following the band. Nearly the final straw? Just let it end. Does it take you 12 years to break up with a woman? 12 years to decide you hate asparagus? Good god, be a man and just end it already! The "Schon thing" sounds like an excuse. Break away... Not an excuse, but nearly the final straw. Good god, be a man and just end it already! I was always hopeful they would turn it around eventually, but they've essentially been in the same vein, musically, for a whole decade, imo. Rush is lackluster, cashgrabbing and unturnaroundable. f**k hope and end it! Resign from TRF. That's your first step to your own personal salvation! Do it!! Done I'm going to print out this post and hang it on my wall.
  4. This shouldn't even need to be explained: Neal Schon did not invent the Arpeggio. Arpeggio's have been around since music left the hands of Monks in monasteries, as have most chords. Its not only the arpeggiation, its the powerchord that precedes, combined with the chorus effect. It is staggering to hear, and is no coincidence. Maybe it is no coincidence. Maybe Alex liked the way it sounded. Did you ever think that maybe he was inspired by it? What was a one-off part to Neal Schon may have become the inspiration for one of Alex's signature styles. That is how music works. Nothing in music is completely original, it can't be. All the parts have already been written. Every sequence of chords has been played already. If you were to pick up a guitar and start playing, you would end up playing something that some one else already played. If you were to write music, all you would be doing is combining elements that you've heard before in new ways. That is how influence works. So what if Neal Schon wrote and performed that Zanadu riff first? He didn't actually write Zanadu. At most he planted a seed in Alex's head that, when combined with all of his other influences led to Zanadu. Every artist does this. This is how people come up with new ideas, by filtering old ideas through their own heads and replicating them. If this makes you not like Rush anymore (even though you never did like them anyway based on all of your other posts) then you also have to hate EVERY OTHER ARTIST IN HISTORY BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL GUILTY OF THIS. If you don't understand this, then you don't understand music. EDIT: I'm gonna expand upon this. What if when Alex first heard that song it just filled his head with ideas? He started imagining variations and other parts that might fit well with them. Things like Cyngus X-1 part 2 or Spirit of Radio. Should he have taken those incredible ideas and just thrown them away purely because they were based on something he's heard before? I don't think so. He went on to make great music that we all love using that style. Besides as I said earlier he was already using the sweeping arpeggios as early as Fly by Night, specifically on Anthem during the verses. Agreed. Like I said before, Neal had a gold nugget in his hand, didn't realize it and placed it back in the river. Alex knew better and snatched it right up. The rest is history. Oh What's a Zanadu? WOW, Oops! It was 5 in the morning where I am so give me a break.

  6. Seriously, Alex was doing similar things as early as Fly by Night.
  7. This shouldn't even need to be explained: Neal Schon did not invent the Arpeggio.
  8. Best show i've ever seen. Those last 3 episodes, holy crap!
  9. Head on over to the "Albums You've listened to today" thread. Great way to find out what others are listening to.

  11. I don't know who Rush could have open for them. Primus already did it and they do their own thing now. It's not going to be some established band that's been on the road for years. And it certainly could not be the Foo Fighters! Those guys out sell Rush constantly, it would be the single most lopsided concert bill in history.
  12. http://www.cygnus-x1...-05.03.1992.php These are all close ups. The Counterparts tourbook pictures contain a few RTB stage shots. Not much though. http://www.2112.net/.../Wallpaper2.htm Not many good full-stage shots....
  13. Steven Wilson to produce the next Rush album.
  14. The editing is a tad hokey. I was really hoping for nice long cuts that allowed you to spend some time with individual members. I guess all concert films can't be Stop Making Sense.
  15. One of my favorite songs from VT and definitely a late-career highlight. This song gets such abuse by fans and I'll never know why.
  16. Excellent thread. Neil all the way. Just let him stand about 10 feet away and throw drumsticks. Those things hurt!
  17. I'd trim a few minutes off of One Little Victory. Other then that, the album is (and has always been) perfect at what it is trying to achieve.
  18. Of course the worthless troll expresses his distaste in the most dismissive and immature ways possible. Care to provide any objective reasoning as to why it was "a shit of a song" or are you just going to run away as usual?
  19. I do think that they should put some limits on it. One track of drums, one of bass, 2 guitars, one or two layers of vocals, and a synth/effect track should be all that's needed. This layers and layers of guitar stuff is just insane. I'd understand it if there was one track for rhythm, one for leads, and a couple of tracks to do little flourishes with here and there, but it just seem like these days it's 20 rhythm tracks right on top of each other. I think that the Anarchist is a very good example of a slick, conservatively produced modern Rush tune. Everything is in it's right place. Clockwork Angels is the exact opposite. It's overly noisy and buried under layers and layers of rhythm guitar, which has made it nearly unenjoyable for me. As for people crapping on modern music, may I please direct you to Radiohead: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFYOkfpBrSY EDIT: I just realized how appropriate it was for me to attach this particular song to this particular post. This song is a good example of a huge number of layers achieving what would be otherwise impossible. There is a ton of stuff going on in this song, 2 different guitars, a bass player, synthesizers of some sort, three drummers, a brass section, and 2 vocalists. Yet, every element is distinct. Each "voice" adding a unique part to the mix. Similar to an orchestra.
  20. Lakeside Park What You're Doing Half the World Sweet Miracle Ghost of a Chance I just don't care about these songs. These are not even bad, they just don't move me in any way.
  21. My job plays oldies radio over the PA system. Under the Boardwalk, My Girl, ABC-123, and of course the king of all crappy over played songs: I Wanna Hold Your Hand. Pure garbage.
  22. They'll play it the same way though, and there's no Paul Northfield and his brick wall in the arena so how will it sound different? The remixed version has a new guitar solo in it.
  23. If they tour again. The new "Ceiling Unlimited" has to be in the setlist.
  24. Why are you even here if you hate everything about the band so much ? You take every opportunity to cut them down in some way. Don't you have anything better to do? Untrue, I like the band very much, There, wherein, lies the "problem". No, you "like" a band from the late 1970's/early 1980's. No. I like a band that's made some very poor decisions over the past +10 years. No. They made decisions that you don't like. It's sad that you are immature enough to think that everything that you don't like is inherently bad.
