AFTK tour - mystery box next to Minimoog

Since I've been trying to resolve lingering Rush minutiae lately, here's another one ..

On the AFTK tour, Geddy added the Minimoog/Taurus pedal setup. In the tour photos, there is always a small box on a stand next to the Minimoog. I always figured it was a small Minimoog-only monitor speaker, or something similar. But that doesn't entirely make sense to me, since it's tiny and perched up so high (suggesting it's something he might adjust on the fly). The connection to it seems to be that white coily cord, which (from looking at other photos) doesn't seem to be connected to the Minimoog output.

Anyone have ideas?

Here are a couple photos of the box in question ..

I think it might be a strobe tuner .. Back in the 1970s, the boxes that assisted with tuning your instrument were bigger

The make is Conn ... Peterson also made one back then

Indeed, that looks like the box! I did stumble on a photo at the link below where it looks like it's connected to the headphones output of the Minimoog .. so that makes some sense. Seems a little strange to have a tuner that prominent on stage though, even if it was necessary (I suspect the Minimoog tuning would drift based on temperature).

Lorraine - Yep, I am a nut for keyboard instruments. I have a big double-manual Neupert harpsichord from the 60s that I love to play (same model as heard on lots of 60s Los Angeles tracks, Addams Family, etc).

A couple more photos ..

Circa Hemispheres / Permanent Waves (since he's got the monster Oberheim 8-voice synth)

Moving Pictures / ESL timeframe, now it's around the corner with the top of the 8-voice ..

And you can see it in this sound check video, between the white Oberheim sequencer and the monster keyboard rig (mostly in the beginning of the video, his body blocks it the rest of the time)

I've never noticed that tuner box thing, but I gotta say, this picture - http://media.gettyim...ure-id109327955 - is a great one. Kind of surprised though, that during this timeframe, they would play such a small venue. I think it was somewhere in England... Birmingham or something??? I've heard that place described as an "old cattle barn" in the middle of a field. Anyone know?

I agree that photo is great. Hard to find a good shot of Geddy's full keyboard setup on those tours (apart from watching the ESL video, where it's dark and hard to see what's what). Looks like the location is Bingley Hall in Stafford England. Here are a few more good photos from that venue on the Permanent Waves tour (the tuner can be spotted in the first one):

I did notice an announcement about Rush donating various items to the Canada Museum of Civilization. A Conn Strobotuner was listed in the donations - so perhaps this same box is on display there now.

I've never seen the first picture before. Love the crowd shot.
